There’s nothing better than discovering a new band, especially when it comes to ‘Wonder 45’ who have just released their latest single ‘Superman’.
This fantastic track is yet another prelude to their highly-anticipated debut album ‘Wonderland’ which drops on May 31st.
Set to be one of the most exciting albums of the summer, London-based soul ensemble, ‘Wonder 45’ have impressed both their ever-growing fan base and the music industry with their exemplary musicianship and colourful storytelling.
The band have released a steady stream of singles over the last few months, all of which have received both international airplay as well as being played throughout the UK Radio network including spins from vocal coaches Carrie and David Grant on BBC Radio London and Craig Charles- BBC 6 Music.
So, who are ‘Wonder 45’ and what can we expect from them in the coming months?
Firstly, despite ‘Wonder 45’ being a relatively new group, the band have been in the music industry for a number of years working with internationally-acclaimed acts like ‘Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’, ‘Michael Kiwanuka’, ‘Monophonics’ and ‘Tom Jones’.
Despite initially forming as an instrumental recording project, the bands sonic approach has evolved into composing and recording uplifting soul music from their London base. The band was conceived by producer/writer Holley Gray and includes the brilliant Jess Greenfield who as well as being a long-standing member of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, has also worked with world-renowned acts like Paul Weller, Richie Sambora, Melanie C and Rudimental.
The band also includes vocalist Gavin Conder, guitarist Ross Ewart, drummer Chris Nickolls and keyboard player Steve Pringle.
The bands stunning debut ‘Wonderland’ really caught the imagination of music fans and this set the wheels in motion for the bands music to be played in ten different countries nationally including BBC 6 Music with Cerys Matthews, Huey Morgan and Craig Charles all championing the London-based band.
One of the forthcoming albums standout tracks, the intoxicating ‘Cry’ has been playlisted on BBC Radio 2 with the likes of Zoe Ball, OJ Borg, Scott Mills and Dermot O’Leary playing this rousing track about bouncing back after heartbreak. ‘Cry’ hits you in the heart, it’s sumptuously rich with a gutsy soulful sonic that is filled with emotion. It feels like it could be released on a film soundtrack and is set to be a fan favourite when performing live. It has already had a sneaky cameo on the small screen having made an appearance in the critically-acclaimed smash prime time BBC 1 drama Avoidance starring comedian Romesh Ranganathan.
You won’t be able to stop yourself dancing with the uplifting ‘Make It Happen’ which is an effervescent, groove-laden track that is steeped in liberation and self-belief. On this and throughout the tracks released so far, you can feel the passion and chemistry from every single member of the band which makes you love them even more.
House of Coco are not alone in their admiration for ‘Wonder 45’, with ‘Blues and Soul Magazine’ naming the band as one of the ‘ones to watch in 2024’ – high praise indeed!
To celebrate the release of their debut album, the band are playing an exclusive one-off gig at Colours Hoxton on the 24th June which is set to be a sell out gig, having already sold out their last two London gigs. Other forthcoming shows include appearances at the Sonne Porte festival in France and the Mostly Soul, Jazz and Funk Festival in Birmingham in July.
We can’t wait to see what else 2024 has in store for ‘Wonder 45’ and there’s no doubt that this album will be one to add to your summer listening playlist.
