I arrived in Florence Italy just as the late afternoon began to settle over a warm city waking up for spring. Tucked away without needing a loud entrance, La Gemma Hotel makes its presence felt through a sophisticated palette of deep greens and marble floors that greet you the moment you enter. The hotel’s identity is built around a striking emerald theme. It isn’t just a surface level decoration; the rich, olive tones flow through every hallway and common space. This design choice is a nod to the green and white marble of the Duomo nearby, yet it provides a necessary contrast to the city’s usual landscape.

Coming in from a long day among the busy sun drenched, terracotta streets, the interior feels like stepping into a cool, calm cocoon.

La Gemma Hotel: Living Above the Rooftops

My fifth floor suite felt incredibly spacious, blending warm olive fabrics with contemporary lines and subtle hints of blush pink. Whilst the inclusion of a kitchen area made the room feel like a home rather than just a place to sleep, the real centerpiece was the view. Seeing the Duomo rise above the surrounding buildings acted as a constant anchor to my location, even when I was simply relaxing indoors.

The building’s historic origins mean that each of the 39 rooms has its own unique layout. Whether they feature a deep bath or a modern walk-in shower, they all share a commitment to high-end luxury.

Culinary Excellence at Luca’s Resturant

The dining here is a crowd draw, especially since La Gemma Hotel’s restaurant, Luca’s has officially earned its first Michelin Star. Under the direction of chef Paulo Airaudo, the kitchen delivers refined Italian flavors with a very modern, playful perspective.

The meal felt like a carefully choreographed event. Each course accompanied by wine pairings from the local region. I particularly remember a seafood risotto that was technically perfect – balancing a deep, savoury richness with very clean flavors. It is easy to see why the restaurant has gained such prestigious recognition.

Beyond the dining room, the hotel emphasizes curated moments, such as cocktail-making workshops in the bar and private rooftop available for a romantic moment. Even the mornings feel intentional. The à la carte breakfast allows you to pick two specific dishes, making the start of the day feel tailored and relaxed.

Stillness in the Allure Spa

Located in the basement level, the Allure Spa feels completely detached from the energetic streets and bar above. It’s a space built for genuine rest. The spa is geared towards slow recovery and the welcome questionnaire focused on detailed wellbeing. I spent time in the plunge pool with massage jets and the sauna. After a soothing back massage, the frantic rhythm of the city felt much further away. The calm feeling stayed with me even after I returned to the lobby.

Positioned for Effortless Exploration

Located within the historic Palazzo Paoletti, the hotel puts you a few minutes’ walk from the Ponte Vecchio and Piazza della Repubblica. It is perfectly situated for sightseeing, yet it retains a sense of being a private retreat. You can jump into the city’s history and art at a moment’s notice and then retreat just as quickly into the hotel’s quiet atmosphere.

It is often the smallest details that make the biggest impact: the way my slippers were set out during turndown service, or the handmade treat waiting on my pillow. The staff are proud of their city and their hotel, offering excellent local tips and organizing unique outings, like a walking food tour of the city with a local expert and a visit to PROFUMOIR Firenze for a bespoke perfume-making workshop.

La Gemma Hotel’s Lasting Impression

On my last morning, I found myself making excuses to linger a little longer. La Gemma Hotel doesn’t feel like it’s trying to compete with the grandeur of Florence; instead, it acts as the perfect partner to it. It offers a rare kind of balance by staying deeply connected to the local culture whilst providing a sanctuary that is entirely its own. It’s the kind of stay that stays in your mind long after you return home.
