Pioneering London-based knitwear designer, Alice Palmer, known for bold and boundary-pushing creations, aims to change the way knitwear is perceived along with her British contemporaries working in the same medium. Inspired by science, technology, art and architecture, Palmer creates sculptural ready-to-wear pieces focused on pattern and form. Employing unconventional knitting techniques, she combines traditional and innovative methods to form garments that are groundbreaking, contemporary and wearable.
Drawing attention on an international scale, Palmer was awarded ‘Best Womenswear Designer’ by ASOS in New York in 2008, leading to a diffusion collection for the site that was launched in spring of 2009. She was a nominee for the ‘Fashion Designer of the Year’ award at the Scottish Style Awards, 2009 and in 2010, Palmer was selected by John Galliano to show on-schedule at London Fashion Week as part of Fashion Fringe. Her spring/summer 2012 collection ‘Interstellar’ was exclusively launched in the D&G concept store in Milan in January 2013, with a nearly 100% sell through within the first month. Palmer was also nominated for the ‘Young Fashion Designer of the Year’ award at the Scottish Fashion Awards in both 2011 and 2012.
Alice Palmer received a BA in Knitted Textiles at the Glasgow School of Art and went on to receive a Masters at the Royal College of Art in London, specialising in Knitted Textiles. The Alice Palmer label was founded in 2008.
“Lady Vengeance’, the autumn/winter 2013 collection, was inspired by the film of the same name, directed by Park Chan-Wook. The key elements see bold, strong, superhero references, nodding to the revenge-seeking protagonist, Lee Geum-ja, who symbolises the concurrence of good and evil, tainted purity.
Soft and harsh, light and dark are expertly combined to create show-stopping pieces including a floor-length red silk dress with see-through slashes and repeating points, black leather panelled trousers and a covetable short leather panelled jacket with draped lapels.
Colour palette: red, black, white and nude, with bursts of gold and silver.
Retail price range: £238 – £1,120
The collection is available to purchase at Dolce & Gabbana in Milan, By Marie in San Tropez, Valleydez in Dubai, De Point in Taiwan at 123 Store in London and online via Young British Designers.
