Wellness Editor, Anji McGrandles checked in to the White Palace in Crete to try out their all-inclusive package.
Think all-inclusive holiday and images of crowded pools, buffet-style food and cheap local alcohol spring to mind.
However new kid on the hotel block, LUXME Resorts by Grecotel, is redefining the all-inclusive with their upscale holiday concept. Located across the Greek islands in spectacular seafront locations, their chic hotels make luxury easy with their great service, outstanding dining, tailored activities and bespoke wellness.
This stunning flagship property is located on the north coast, close to the pretty old town of Rethymnon and is just over one hour’s drive from Chania and Heraklion airport. Sitting on a stretch of sandy beach, White Palace has spectacular views across the Cretan Sea and is perfectly positioned to take in sensational sunsets.
Living up to its name the hotel is predominantly white. Light, open-style spaces make the property feel spacious and uncrowded. Lots of white can often feel clinical but the design here is more understated elegance. Minimal décor and glass are juxtaposed with lots of plants bringing the outdoors in. Comfy seating, swing chairs and soft cream lounge beds give Mediterranean vibes.
The reception offers impressive views of the main pool, which takes centre stage at the heart of the hotel. Upon arrival we were greeted with the welcome trolley of drinks and treats and after a speedy check-in, we were taken to our room.
The accommodation ranges from suites, bungalows and family rooms with direct pool access. This year sees the launch of the Swim-Up Room Collection as well as the new Yali Seafront Villas with private pools and sea views. We were upgraded to one of the ground-floor suites.
This generous-sized accommodation has its own walk-in wardrobe and a large marble bathroom with a bath and shower which leads through to the bedroom. Sliding panels add privacy between the bedroom and a lounge area, both have floor-to-ceiling glass doors which step out onto a private terrace and sharing pool. There’s a Nespresso coffee machine and the mini-bar is replenished daily with soft drinks, beers and wine.
You don’t have to worry about being fed and watered here, White Palace has nailed the food and drink proposition. There are seven restaurants to choose from, each one showcasing premium dining and extensive choice. Ventanas Il Mar is the only buffet restaurant, it’s ideal for breakfast and a light lunch, and the rest are a la carte.
The Tavernaki serves authentic Greek dishes, the Moussaka is one of the best I’ve had. There’s a Pan-Asian restaurant and a newly opened Lobsteria, serving local seafood. The White is an adult-only, fine-dining restaurant.
This unique concept celebrates the flavours of Greece, France and Italy, creating three menus using the same ingredients but influenced by the flavours of each region. We opted for the Greek menu and it didn’t disappoint.
A combination of light delicate flavours and succulent cuts of meat were paired with a crisp white local wine. Its rooftop terrace setting means everyone gets a view to die for.
While the adults can enjoy the fine dining, kids will love the Gelateria that serves a myriad of flavours as well as waffles and crepes. I must admit I found myself at the beachfront counter most afternoons hankering for a mint choc chip cone. And if that isn’t enough to satisfy your sweet tooth, at 6.30 pm the doors to the hotel candy bar open. Indulge in cake pops, jars of colourful sweets and chocolate treats
There is a wine-tasting room for guests to try some exceptional local and international wines. The Wine Cellar has its own personal sommelier who will give you plenty of options to taste so you can find your favourite wine.
After dinner head to the Sunset Lounge bar where you can try a signature cocktail while soaking up the scenery and atmosphere. There’s evening entertainment most nights, from DJs to saxophonists.
The hotel has an activities calendar so there’s always something going on, your villa manager or guest service team can help you plan your stay.
Outdoor pilates, stretching and yoga classes are available daily. For guests seeking a window into local life on Crete, the hotel can organise a visit to the Grecotel-owned, Agreco Farm & Taverna to uncover the gastronomic traditions of Cretan cuisine. There are lots of ‘extras’ you can book too, from water sports and private dining to a luxury yacht trip.
We were there to relax and make the most of the infinity pool outside our suite. The hotel staff are friendly and attentive, and the pool waiter regularly swung by our terrace to replenish drinks and offer smoothies or snacks. If you want to truly unwind then book into the Hippie Spa for one of their signature treatments.
I left Crete with a different perspective on all-inclusive holidays. LUXME Resorts has successfully designed an experience that showcases quality and luxury. While this hotel is perfect for families there’s a touch of grown-up sophistication to White Palace that makes it the ideal destination for those looking for an elegant, indulgent break.
White Palace rates start at €326 for a Swim Up White Room.
