House of Coco’s travel writer, Sally Seaton, traded the familiar for a solo retreat above Hong Kong for her birthday, staying at Hotel ICON, set in the heart of the Kowloon peninsula.
We’re often taught to celebrate milestones in the company of others, but as a frequent solo traveller, I chose to mark my birthday differently, by escaping to one of the world’s most dynamic cities and settling into the quiet luxury of a five-star stay. It became one of the most memorable birthdays I’ve experienced. Waking up to Victoria Harbour from my lush king-size bed felt truly magical, with soft morning light illuminating the skyline across the bay.
At Hotel ICON, thoughtful touches awaited: The suite was adorned with balloons and gifts, setting the tone for a celebration that felt both personal and indulgent. As evening fell, I marked the occasion at Above & Beyond, where sweeping views of Hong Kong’s illuminated skyline created a moment that felt nothing short of extraordinary.
Private Sanctuary
Entering the Club 38 Harbour, I was immediately drawn to the sweeping views across Hong Kong. Sheer curtains framed the floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing natural light to filter through as the skyline unfolded across the harbour beyond. Positioned directly opposite the bed, the view became part of the room itself, something to wake to, unwind with, and take in throughout the day.
As a Club 38 guest, I enjoyed a series of thoughtful indulgences, from a beautifully presented breakfast and afternoon tea to evening cocktails and all-day access to the lounge. Each offering was complemented by elevated views of the city, creating a sense of comfort and exclusivity.
Spanning 36 square metres, the Harbour King felt both generous and considered. A well-appointed workspace sat alongside a spacious bathroom, where a statement mirror and twin basins took centre stage, complemented by a deep soaking tub, walk-in rainfall shower, and separate facilities.
Blending contemporary Western design with subtle Eastern influences, the suite exuded a calm, modern elegance. Soft, ambient lighting added warmth to the darker interiors, creating a space that felt both intimate and refined. Evenings were best spent unwinding in the deep bath with a glass of champagne in hand – the perfect way to celebrate myself in luxury and comfort.
Dining in the Sky
As if the experience couldn’t feel more considered, I marked my birthday with an evening at Above & Beyond, the hotel’s rooftop restaurant recognised by the MICHELIN Guide.
Set high above the city, I took my seat by the window, where Hong Kong’s skyline shimmered below in a sea of vibrant lights. It was one of those rare moments that invites you to absorb, taking in the view, the occasion, and the sense of being exactly where you’re meant to be.
The Cantonese à la carte menu, curated by Executive Chef Chi Ki Wong, unfolded as a series of refined courses. I began with baked pork spare ribs with cherry and hawthorn, dramatically presented aflame. The wok-fried Australian Wagyu beef, paired with potato, honey and black pepper, was a standout – tender, richly flavoured, and cooked with precision. This was complemented by fried rice with Kagoshima Chamiton pork and preserved vegetables, offering a perfectly balanced finish.
To conclude the evening, a chilled mango pudding arrived adorned with a candle – a thoughtful birthday touch that felt both intimate and celebratory. Sitting high above the city, I took a moment to reflect, immersed in the flavours and the view.
Alongside its à la carte offerings, Above & Beyond also presents seasonal tasting menus and refined dim sum, further elevating the dining experience.
Exploring Hong Kong
Situated along Victoria Harbour in the heart of Kowloon, Hotel ICON places the city’s most compelling experiences within easy reach. I spent leisurely afternoons wandering through nearby shopping destinations such as K11 MUSEA, where luxury retail meets art and culture.
As night fell, the harbour transformed into a spectacle of light. I watched the Symphony of Lights shimmer across the skyline before taking to the water on a harbour cruise, where the city revealed itself in a wash of colour and reflection. One evening, I wandered through Temple Street Night Market, sampling local delicacies, from succulent roast goose to pillowy pork buns and freshly made egg waffles, each offering a taste of Hong Kong’s vibrant culinary scene.
For exploring further afield, East Tsim Sha Tsui Station is just a short walk from the hotel, providing easy access to Hong Kong Island. I spent a day in Central, beginning with the historic Peak Tram, which has ascended to Victoria Peak since 1888. The journey itself is an experience, revealing sweeping views of the city on the way to the top. At the summit, there are walking trails, cafés and restaurants that offer a slower, more scenic perspective of Hong Kong.
Back in Central, I sought out local institutions such as Lan Fong Yuen, famed for its signature Hong Kong-style toast, before continuing to Man Mo Temple. A stroll through Central Market and a ride along the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator – one of the longest covered outdoor systems in the world – offered yet another layer to the city’s dynamic atmosphere, a journey I found myself wishing would never end.
A Perfect Base for Luxury Solo Travel
While I wasn’t exploring Hong Kong, I was relaxing in the grandeur of Hotel ICON. For sunny days, even in the Spring, the heated swimming pool looks out onto Hong Kong’s iconic harbour and skyline, making it the perfect place to read a book, have a swim, or simply unwind. The crystal-blue pool takes centre stage, lined with comfortable cushioned beds and armchairs for soaking up the sun.
Beside the swimming pool is Timeless Lounge and the gym, a place to relax during the wet weather and take in the views from indoors. The fitness centre is open 24 hours and directly faces the glowing harbour, potentially the best gym I have ever worked out in.
My favourite retreats, however, were the peaceful hours spent in the Club lounge, exclusively for suite guests. Here, I savoured champagne and sweet cocktails alongside decadent treats, enveloped in an atmosphere of calm. The space felt intimate, private, and effortlessly luxurious.
With such thoughtful amenities, Hotel ICON is a sanctuary for luxury solo travellers. Comfortable, safe, and accessible, it allows you to enjoy the city’s beauty regardless of the weather, while its prime location and convenient transport links make it an ideal base for discovering Hong Kong in style.
As my stay at Hotel ICON came to an end, I found myself reflecting on what it truly means to celebrate. In a city as vibrant and fast-paced as Hong Kong, I had carved out a space that felt entirely my own.
There is something deeply empowering about travelling solo, especially when wrapped in this level of comfort and care. From waking up to golden light glistening across the skyline, to evenings spent high above the city with a glass of champagne in hand, every moment felt connected.
Hotel ICON is a sanctuary for the independent traveller, where thoughtful touches and elevated experiences come together seamlessly. For those seeking to celebrate life’s milestones differently or simply to relax and indulge, it offers the perfect setting.
