Marriott Bournemouth Highcliff ticks all those boxes, with its newly renovated Coastal Cottages offering one of the most charming places to stay on the Dorset coast.
Perched on Bournemouth’s West Cliff with sweeping views across the English Channel, the hotel has been welcoming guests for more than 150 years, but its beautifully restored Coastal Cottages bring a fresh new chapter to this historic address.

Marriott Bournemouth Highcliff’s Coastal Cottage Charm
One of the things we loved most about the Coastal Cottages is how they’ve managed to preserve their history while feeling completely contemporary. Originally built as coastguard cottages in the 19th century before later becoming private homes, the buildings have been thoughtfully restored rather than reinvented. Original character sits comfortably alongside modern touches, giving each space plenty of personality without ever feeling over-designed.
The interiors, created by Joanna Knight Interiors, draw inspiration from the surrounding coastline with soft sandy tones, natural textures and subtle pops of colour that echo Bournemouth’s iconic beach huts. Little details such as retro Smeg fridges, bespoke artwork and locally inspired finishing touches make the rooms feel more like a stylish seaside home than a hotel bedroom.
Adding to the residential feel, every group of four rooms is accessed through its own colourful front door, each named after the individual cottage it belongs to. Inside, bespoke artwork celebrates the history and landscape of the area, from maritime-inspired pieces in Captain’s Cottage to references to nearby Studland Bay, quietly connecting guests to the rich heritage of this beautiful stretch of the Dorset coastline.
While the cottages offer plenty of independence, guests still enjoy full access to everything the main hotel has to offer, including the heated outdoor pool, landscaped gardens and, of course, the fantastic Brasserie Blanc. It’s the perfect balance between a private seaside retreat and a luxury hotel stay, making it a strong contender for the best dog-friendly hotel in Bournemouth.
One of our favourite discoveries was the shared garden just outside the cottages. Complete with lawn games, comfortable seating and beautifully maintained lawns, it quickly became our favourite place to unwind. We spent hours reading with our pup snoozing beside us, soaking up the sea breeze and listening to the sound of the waves in the distance. It’s a wonderfully peaceful space that encourages you to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of being by the coast.
When it came to dining, Brasserie Blanc was the main restaurant on-site. The French bistro-style menu focuses on comforting classics and seasonal dishes served in a relaxed setting. We especially liked the filet de boeuf, escargot and the steak tartare which was authentic without being too fussy. We adored eating out on the terrace, and the clifftop location means you’re treated to excellent sea views throughout your meal. While service was a little hit or miss during our visit (it was Father’s Day after all and the restaurant was brimming with families celebrating), overall the Brasserie Blanc experience was ‘tres bien’ in our books.
Exploring Bournemouth’s Incredible Coastline
Of course, one of the biggest reasons to book a stay here is Bournemouth’s incredible coastline. The main beach around Bournemouth Pier is undeniably beautiful, although during the summer months the designated dog-friendly areas are more limited and the central sections can become particularly busy.
Thankfully, there are several excellent beaches nearby where dogs are welcome throughout the year. Hengistbury Head is easily our favourite, offering miles of uninterrupted sand, dramatic coastal paths and nature reserve walks that make it one of Dorset’s finest places for long walks with your dog. Fisherman’s Walk Beach is another fantastic option if your pup enjoys swimming and running along the sand, while Branksome Dene Chine and Middle Chine both offer designated year-round dog-friendly sections.
After days spent exploring Dorset’s coastline, returning to the Coastal Cottages felt wonderfully restorative. Their residential feel, thoughtful interiors and peaceful surroundings create an experience that feels far removed from a standard hotel room while still offering all the comforts and facilities of a Marriott stay.
