We’ve all seen matte or dewy makeup looks, and not everyone is all for matte or all for dewy – some even like both! As a general rule of thumb, this can be down to your skin type. For example, although it may seem counterintuitive, some oily skin types are actually suitable for that dewy look. If you are a fan of the dewy makeup look, your entire skincare regime can be tailored to suit this type of makeup finish.

However, that said, everyone’s skin and preferences are different – so what may work for one person, may not work for you – but, that’s alright! No matter your preference, we’ve got you covered. Here’s how to achieve the perfect finish to your makeup, matte or dewy.

The perfect finish for you

There are pros and cons to both makeup finishes, so be wary of these! For instance, dewy makeup looks can make you look rather oily, and even more so for oily skin types, so it’d be wise to have blotting paper or powder in your handbag with you.

Meanwhile, matte makeup can enhance wrinkles, fine lines, and patches of dry skin, which may look harsher on dry skin types. Therefore, don’t be afraid to experiment with different makeup styles to see which one suits you best.

Matte

For a matte finish, it’s a no-brainer that you should opt for matte products. Apply mattifying skin products if you have particularly oily skin, before going ahead and using a matte foundation. Matte foundation is especially great for providing a full coverage base, if that’s what you’re looking for. Whilst we can’t say how your makeup will look after a few hours, matte products will significantly help to take the shine down a few notches.

Remember – matte makeup looks utilise matte products, so avoid lip gloss and stick to matte lipstick (with lip liner!) instead. If you’d like just a slight bit of glow, choose a powder highlighter. It’s also a good idea to set your makeup with a setting powder and a mattifying setting spray to lock in your makeup for the day, so don’t forget this step for the final touch to your matte makeup look.

Dewy

Now, for the dewy makeup lovers out there, the best approach to dewy makeup is to use cream products. Unlike a matte look where shine is not your best friend, dewy makeup is all about bringing your inner (and extra) glow to the surface.

To start off, your makeup prep should consist of hydrating skincare products that will not only serve to hydrate and moisturise your skin, but also to assist in letting your skin glow naturally. We suggest using products like the limited edition illuminatorwhich is perfect for preparing your skin before makeup.

If you’re planning on applying foundation for a dewy look, a water-based foundation is the best type of foundation to use. In general, however, dewy foundations aren’t necessarily the best at covering any skin concerns. So, if you’re looking to cover any blemishes, ensure that you have a good concealer too.

Likewise with a matte look, set your makeup after, but, instead of a setting powder as suggested before, we advise using a dewy setting spray for that glowing finish.

With all these things in mind, all that is left to do is experiment and find the best look for you.
