In a city celebrated for its ancient temples, breathtaking nature and laid-back charm, Meliá Chiang Mai offers a contemporary interpretation of Northern Thai hospitality. Rising above the banks of the Ping River, with views stretching towards the misty slopes of Doi Suthep, the five-star property feels intrinsically connected to its surroundings. While its sleek interiors and elevated service at The Level deliver the hallmarks of modern luxury, it is the thoughtful touches of Chiang Mai’s culture that bring this hotel to life. From temple-inspired design elements to references to the city’s most cherished traditions, this five-star stay feels distinctly local.

In the heart of Chiang Mai, Meliá offers a tranquil urban oasis, perfectly balancing contemporary luxury with the city’s captivating charm. From high above on the 22nd floor, whether at The Level Lounge or Mai The Sky Bar & Restaurant, I was treated to breathtaking panoramas of the Ping River on one side and the misty peaks of Doi Suthep on the other.
One of Chiang Mai’s most iconic landmarks, Doi Suthep rises 1,676 metres above the city and is home to the revered Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a sacred Buddhist temple dating back to 1383. Its presence on the horizon serves as a constant reminder of the region’s rich cultural heritage.
These spectacular views extended into the comfort of my room, framed by Chiang Mai’s natural beauty. One of my favourite elements was settling into the sofa by the window each morning, enjoying the fresh fruit thoughtfully prepared on arrival while gazing out over the lush landscape below. With the hotel’s crystal-blue pool glistening beneath me and the mountains stretching into the distance, it was easy to embrace a slower pace of life. Surrounded by nature yet cocooned in understated luxury, the experience captured the very essence of Chiang Mai.
It’s the perfect location for exploring the city, with the Sunday walking street close by, surrounding Buddhist temples, cafes and restaurants.
Chiang Mai’s Cultural Heritage
Stepping into Meliá Chiang Mai is a breathtaking experience. The grand lobby sets the tone with gleaming marble floors, organic wood panelling and sophisticated silver accents that effortlessly blend modern sophistication with the rich cultural heritage of Northern Thailand. Throughout the property, the interior design pays homage to Chiang Mai’s historic past while incorporating contemporary touches and subtle influences from Meliá’s Spanish roots.
The striking lobby design draws inspiration from the lanterns synonymous with Thailand’s traditional Songkran festival and Chiang Mai’s celebrated Yi Peng Lantern Festival. A symbol of devotion, renewal and good fortune, the annual festival sees thousands of illuminated lanterns released into the night sky, creating one of the region’s most enchanting celebrations. As the cultural heart of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai remains at the centre of these cherished traditions.
Intricate design details reference some of the city’s most recognisable landmarks, including Tha Phae Gate and Wat Sri Suphan, better known as the Silver Temple. It is here that the hotel’s refined silver accents find their inspiration, adding a sense of understated elegance while further strengthening its connection to Chiang Mai’s cultural identity.
A Calm Oasis
Inside the Meliá Room, I stepped into a calm oasis, bathed in natural light and designed with a modern aesthetic that felt both luxurious and inviting. The soothing interiors created an immediate sense of comfort, making it the ideal space to relax and unwind after a day exploring Chiang Mai.
Spanning 30 sqm, the room offered generous space, featuring either a king-size or twin beds, a plush sofa, a desk and chair, and an indulgent bathroom. Thoughtfully designed for both short city escapes and extended stays, the accommodation combines style with practicality. West-facing rooms enjoy spectacular sunset views over Doi Suthep, while east-facing rooms are illuminated by the soft morning light rising above the Ping River.
Meliá Chiang Mai offers eight accommodation categories alongside two luxurious suites, both accompanied by exclusive access to The Level Lounge. The crowning jewel is The Level Presidential Suite, an impressive 113 sqm retreat featuring a freestanding bath, an elegant dining area and expansive living spaces, creating an exceptional setting for a lavish Chiang Mai escape.
There is also an on-site fitness centre, swimming pool and YHI Spa where guests can enjoy soothing treatments, a sauna and steam room.
Slowing Down in Luxury
The Level Lounge feels like stepping into another world, offering a slower, more refined pace away from the energy of the city below. Every detail feels thoughtful and personalised, from the private check-in and check-out service to the all-day selection of gourmet refreshments. Guests can enjoy an exclusive breakfast on the 21st floor, afternoon tea, evening cocktails and canapés, and freshly brewed tea and coffee throughout the day, all while taking in sweeping views of Chiang Mai through floor-to-ceiling windows.
My arrival was seamless. As I settled into the lounge, I was welcomed with a fragrant jasmine green tea alongside a selection of complimentary afternoon tea treats, including freshly baked scones, delicate finger sandwiches, seasonal fruit and muffins.
While The Level guests can choose between the exclusive lounge and Laan Na Kitchen for breakfast, The Level Lounge became my favourite. The atmosphere was wonderfully tranquil, creating a sense of intimacy and privacy high above the city. The menu featured freshly prepared dishes such as eggs Benedict and fluffy pancakes, complemented by a curated selection of pastries, fresh fruit and lighter breakfast options. Seated by the window, I lingered over breakfast while admiring the views before spending a peaceful morning working from my laptop. It was the kind of space that encouraged you to slow down, savour the moment and simply enjoy being there.
Evenings Above The City
Located on the 22nd floor of Meliá Chiang Mai, Mai The Sky Bar offers a sophisticated setting high above the city, while one floor below, Mai Restaurant provides an equally elegant dining experience. Both venues showcase panoramic views across Chiang Mai and are renowned for being among the city’s only high-rise dining destinations, offering breathtaking vistas from every angle.
The rooftop bar beautifully blends local culture with Meliá’s Spanish heritage, serving beautifully crafted cocktails alongside a selection of flavourful tapas. I opted for the Meliá Blossom mocktail, a refreshing combination of lychee juice, lime juice, cherry blossom syrup and grenadine, which delivered just the right balance of sweetness. To accompany it, I shared the lamb quesadilla and beef skewer, served with seasoned mashed potatoes and roasted red pepper. The beef was exceptionally tender, melting effortlessly in the mouth.
Heading down to the 21st floor, I experienced authentic Northern Thai cuisine at Mai Restaurant. The atmosphere was serene and refined, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing sweeping views across the city. The menu celebrates locally sourced ingredients, with much of the produce supplied by Chiang Mai Green Kitchen farmers, ensuring freshness and sustainability throughout each dish.
Dinner began with a vibrant khao soi salad, reimagining Chiang Mai’s iconic curry dish through a colourful medley of fresh vegetables, aromatic curry dressing and egg. This was followed by kua mee moo, featuring fermented noodles wrapped in lotus leaf, accompanied by pork neck, dark soy sauce and pickled cabbage.
For the main course, a rich Hang Lay-style pork rib curry was served alongside poached pear and pickled vegetables, creating a wonderful balance of sweet, savoury and tangy flavours. The meal concluded on a sweet note with organic longan pudding drizzled in butterscotch sauce, perfectly complemented by a scoop of coconut ice cream.
As my stay came to an end, the hotel’s deep connection to Chiang Mai itself was what stood out to me. From sunset behind Doi Suthep to heritage-inspired design, Meliá Chiang Mai beautifully highlights Northern Thailand in a way that feels both sophisticated and genuine.
Having previously stayed at Meliá Pattaya, I was struck by how differently each property interprets its surroundings. While Pattaya reflects the glamour and energy of Thailand’s coast, Chiang Mai embraces a quieter rhythm inspired by centuries of culture, tradition and natural beauty.
