Montcalm East: A Stylish, Unfussy Five-Star Stay in East London

Set on the edge of Shoreditch, where the City of London begins to blur into East London’s creative districts, Montcalm East occupies a distinctive spot that immediately shapes the experience of staying there. This isn’t the London of grand boulevards and historic landmarks; instead, it’s a neighbourhood of street art, independent cafés, and a steady buzz of local life. That setting gives the hotel a slightly different perspective – less tourist-focused, more lived-in – and makes it feel like a refreshing alternative base for exploring the city.

First Impressions of Shoreditch’s Montcalm East

The building itself is striking, a faceted glass tower that rises above City Road and catches the light in a way that’s hard to miss. Inside, the décor leans heavily into a contemporary East London identity. There are bold geometric patterns, contemporary artwork, and subtle nods to the area’s creative culture. The public spaces feel polished and considered, though there’s a slightly corporate edge to the overall aesthetic. It’s undeniably stylish, but at times it feels more like a high-end workspace or design-led business hotel than somewhere deeply personal or intimate.

That tone carries through the stay. Although Montcalm East is a five-star property, it’s notably unfussy. There’s no sense of formality or overindulgence. Instead, everything is streamlined and easy. It works particularly well as a base for a work trip, given its proximity to Old Street and London’s tech hub, but it’s equally suited to a relaxed city break or even a family stay. It’s comfortable and efficient, with a focus on practicality rather than ceremony.

Modern Design with an East London Edge

The rooms reflect that same approach. Mine was spacious and filled with natural light thanks to large windows, with a layout that felt both functional and well thought out. The bed was excellent, and everything was clean and modern. While the finishes are good quality, they lean more toward understated comfort than traditional five-star opulence. The emphasis is on ease and functionality rather than classic luxury, creating a space that feels easy to settle into.

Relaxing at Montcalm East: Pool, Sauna, and a Calm Escape

One of the standout features is the spa area, tucked away below ground level. It has a calm, cocooned feel that contrasts beautifully with the energy of Shoreditch outside. The centrepiece is the sizeable indoor swimming pool, which is notably generous by central London standards. Framed by ambient lighting and sleek contemporary finishes, it feels more substantial than the compact plunge-style pools often found in city hotels.

Adjacent to the pool, the jacuzzi adds another layer of relaxation, particularly welcome after a long day navigating London on foot. The thermal facilities are equally well considered, with both a sauna and steam room providing space to decompress and reset. Together, they create a wellness offering that feels genuinely destination-worthy rather than simply an added hotel amenity.

There’s also a well-equipped fitness studio, as well as an extensive treatment menu offering massages and facials, which adds to the sense of a well-rounded wellness offering. It’s a space that invites you to slow down, perfect for resetting both body and mind after a long day exploring the city on foot.

Casual and Convenient Dining

Food at the hotel is deliberately casual, with a menu built around familiar, easy-going dishes – think stacked burgers, crisp salads, club sandwiches, and the occasional pasta or grilled fish. It’s the kind of offering that’s reliable and straightforward rather than ambitious, making it a convenient option if you’d rather stay in than head out into Shoreditch’s busy dining scene. For a five-star hotel, the dining leans more toward simplicity than standout flair, though it fits neatly with the hotel’s overall relaxed, unfussy approach.

Guests expecting a destination dining experience or the kind of elevated gastronomy associated with some luxury London hotels may find the menu a little safe and predictable. Yet that restraint also feels intentional: Montcalm East seems less interested in culinary showmanship and more focused on delivering a dependable, comfortable experience that complements the hotel’s laid-back aesthetic. In a neighbourhood packed with acclaimed restaurants and trend-led openings, the hotel’s dining works best as a convenient option rather than a headline attraction in its own right.

Is Montcalm East Worth It? A Balanced Review

What stands out most is the location. Shoreditch isn’t where many first-time visitors choose to stay, and that gives Montcalm East a slightly different identity. You’re surrounded by a more local, creative energy, with plenty of independent spots to explore just outside the door. At the same time, transport links are strong, so reaching central London is straightforward. It strikes a nice balance between being well-connected and feeling removed from the more crowded tourist areas.

Overall, Montcalm East offers a modern albeit casual take on five-star hospitality. It’s stylish, comfortable, and well positioned in one of London’s more interesting neighbourhoods. While it doesn’t lean heavily into traditional luxury or opulence, it succeeds as a practical, well-executed place to stay – particularly for those who value wellness facilities and a more relaxed, contemporary atmosphere.
