Top local chef awarded by the prestigious Michelin organisation is behind new ‘Bird and Beast’ concept
Premium free range Yorkshire chicken will be restaurant’s speciality
An innovative, brand-new restaurant concept – which proudly places premium local chicken centre stage on its menu – aims to rule the roost in Leeds’ dynamic dining scene.
Located in the heart of Leeds City Centre on Central Road, ‘Bird and Beast’ has been launched last week by top Yorkshire chef, Simon Shaw, chef/proprietor of the award-winning ‘El Gato Negro’ restaurant in Ripponden, West Yorkshire.
Focusing on delivering excellent quality food at superb prices to Leeds diners, the stylish independent restaurant marks the chef’s welcome return to Leeds. Simon was Executive Chef at Harvey Nichols Leeds before relocating to London to become Head Chef at their prestigious Fifth Floor restaurant in Knightsbridge. He returned north to establish the acclaimed ‘El Gato Negro’, which was recently awarded one of only three prestigious Michelin ‘Bib Gourmand’ in the whole of Yorkshire.
All Bird and Beast’s produce is supplied by Sykes House Farms, in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds, where they raise the finest free-range chicken to exacting standards.
In order to compliment the quality of the chicken with a unique and delicious taste, every chicken is double-marinated in Simon’s specially-created rub; steamed to seal in all the natural moisture and flavour; and finished on the restaurant’s custom-made British rotisserie, a central feature which customers can view as they dine. Up to thirty chickens turn slowly over cherry wood chips and charcoal for a rich, even colour and the signature smoked flavour.
The chicken can be served to suit parties of all sizes and a whole sauté cut chicken is just £15.50 for 8 pieces – ideal for sharing between 2 or 3 people, with a selection of freshly-cooked side dishes averaging £3. As well as delicious sides there are regularly-changing seasonal salads, such as the current summery orange, chilli and cashew salad.
The hip restaurant with open kitchen caters for up to 100 people also includes a private dining room which seats 18 and is perfect for special occasions or functions.
What’s more, every Sunday Bird meets Beast, with the restaurant’s special mouth-watering sirloin and belly pork Sunday roast dinners, accompanied by Yorkshire pudding and cauliflower cheese.
Sunday roasts are priced at £12.95, with a special children’s price of £7 including an ice cream.

We’ve taken the popular British staple of chicken and chips and elevated it to the next level. Its high quality flavour without any fuss – we cater for everyone and we’re confident the restaurant will be received well by diners in the city.
