Nipotina, Authentic Italian Dining in Mayfair

If you’ve ever attempted Christmas shopping in the West-end, you’ll know the exact moment when you hit your limit — the crowds, the queues, the general sense that everyone else has also decided to buy their entire Christmas list on the same day. Thankfully, just a short walk away sits Nipotina, offering authentic Italian dining in Mayfair — a perfect pitstop to indulge in a long lunch and a couple of drinks.  We sent Wellness Editor, Anji McGrandles to check it out.

Nipotina, Authentic Italian Dining

Nipotina feels like the calmer, more polished younger sister of a classic Italian trattoria — warm lighting, relaxed energy and the sort of discreet buzz that makes you want to settle in rather than rush. It’s stylish without being smug or intimidating, which already puts it ahead of half of Mayfair.

We went on a Friday lunchtime after a morning navigating Oxford Street and was greeted with a glass of champagne, and a ‘people watching’ perch by the window. Nipotina’s menu is a blend of traditional and modern Italian dishes, emphasising authentic flavours and family recipes. There’s plenty to choose from, and we start things off with a spread of starters that immediately set the tone for the afternoon. The ’nduja arancini were perfect little balls of fried rice, crisp on the outside, soft and molten inside, with a cheeky little kick from the spicy sausage. They landed on the table piping hot and were gone embarrassingly fast.

The burrata that followed was one of those “oh wow” moments. Creamy in that effortless way good burrata is, this was served alongside a fabulous Italian breadbasket — warm, fresh, and varied enough that you don’t have to fight over the best slice. Between the pillowy cheese and the dangerously moreish bread, I started to think I wouldn’t need a main course.

We also had the zucchini, lightly battered and addictive, which my date and I picked at casually until we suddenly realise the plate was empty. The starters hit the spot, and while they were generous portions, they weren’t too heavy.

The Mains

For the main course, we went in two completely different directions. We decided to share so we got the best of both worlds, and I’m so pleased we did. The lobster ravioli was a bougee upgrade. Delicate parcels filled with sweet lobster, wrapped in silky pasta, and finished with a sauce that had just enough flavour without domineering the seafood. It was rich, yes, but not in an “I should lie down after this” way — more in a “why didn’t I order my own portion” way.

Across from me, the steak arrived perfectly cooked, served with roast potatoes and a peppercorn sauce that was creamy, peppery, and bold but not overpowering. It was classic, done properly, and quietly impressive. Nothing showy, just solid technique and great ingredients.

The Service

What made the entire experience at Nipotina stand out, more than the food even, was the service. Our waiter, Luke, was excellent. Attentive without hovering, genuinely friendly rather than scripted, and full of thoughtful insider recommendations that helped us navigate the menu choices. He managed that almost telepathic balance of knowing when to appear and when to let you enjoy your lunch in peace.

The drinks were equally well-curated. The wine list leans Italian, and Felix, the sommelier, introduced us to a bottle we probably never would’ve picked ourselves. Normally I default to a Gavi di Gavi when I’m playing it safe, but his suggestion — the Castello di Neive Montebertotto, turned out to be spot on. Crisp, clean, and a bit of a revelation. I even took a snap of the bottle for next time.

By the end of the meal, what was meant to be a quick lunch had morphed into something much slower and far more enjoyable. There was no rush to turn the table, no hovering, no subtle “please leave” cues you often get in busy central London restaurants. Just great food, great service, and a space that’s miles away from the shopping chaos taking place a few streets away.

Nipotina isn’t trying to reinvent anything or shout for attention, and that’s exactly what makes it so appealing. It’s confident where it counts: flavour, atmosphere, and hospitality. Whether you’re escaping the shopping madness, meeting someone for a long overdue catch-up, or just treating yourself to a proper weekday lunch, this place delivers.
