West London’s dining scene is having a major moment. Moving away from “stuffy and normal”, the area now leans towards luxury comfort where restaurants, pubs, and bistros display understated luxury that doesn’t need to shout to be noticed. Few restaurants embody this as effortlessly as Sam’s Waterside & Sam’s Kitchen.
Across two visits — a sunlit brunch in Brentford and a lively evening of smash burgers in Hammersmith — Sam’s revealed its versatility, moving effortlessly from considered British brunch to bold, comfort-driven dishes.

Mornings at Sam’s Waterside: A Brunch to Linger Over
Perched along Brentford’s riverside, the setting is light-filled and elegant, almost encouraging guests to take their time and just live in the moment of its ambiance accompanied by good food. On our Sunday visit, the weekend brunch menu champions the best of modern British produce.

We began our brunch with Goldstein smoked salmon. This was a masterclass in subtle luxury. The velvety ribbons of salmon are paired with pillowy scrambled eggs and a dollop of cool crème fraîche, all grounded by the crunch of sourdough toast and aromatic hit of dill.
Then came the house-made hash brown, treacle-cured bacon, and fried St Ewe egg with sriracha. It’s a powerhouse brunch dish at its most decadent. The deep, malty sweetness of the thick bacon meets the rich, golden richness of the St Ewe yolk, with a calculated sharp hit of sriracha to cut through the salt.

Of course, no breakfast is complete without having a full English. It’s a classic that almost all cafes or restaurants will serve up. But it’s hard to really knock it out of the park. So, to find a place that makes a classic truly elevate the archetype, is rare. But Sam’s reimagines the dish perfectly with eggs, succulent bacon, sausage, black pudding, and house-baked beans. It was a generous expression of classic brunch fare done with real care.

Lastly, we ended on a sweet note by indulging ourselves with their cinnamon French toast with berry compote and whipped mascarpone. The bread, golden-edged. The berries, zesty with a tang. The compote’s juices soaking into the toast with a syrupy bleed. And the mascarpone, cloud-like. The dish isn’t just a sugar hit; it’s a study in balance.
During the weekday hustle, Sam’s Waterside now offers a purposeful morning menu for a quick but high-quality fix, offering the choice of a streamlined breakfast combo or a diverse selection of refined morning plates. Options include staples like bacon bap, bacon & egg on Emmental brioche with sriracha aioli, toasted banana bread with espresso butter, and grilled halloumi, avocado, on a chilli jam brioche.
Pairing the meal with a finely brewed coffee or a refreshing OJ with the river view to match, it’s easy to get lost in the calm, relaxing tempo here and simply forget the pace of the outside world.
What sets Sam’s Waterside apart is not just the quality of ingredients, but the way dishes are composed with meticulous harmony. Brunch here feels less like eating and more like enjoying time itself with its space designed for lingering, alone or otherwise.
Evening Indulgence at Sam’s Kitchen: Smash Burgers Done Right
By contrast, meals at Sam’s Kitchen are purposefully eclectic. Born from the success of a summer pop-up, Sam’s smash burger service has now become a weekly offering.

From Thursday to Saturday, evenings in Hammersmith take on a genuine verve, where locals and visitors alike flock to 17 Crisp Road for what has already become a beloved ritual. Their Smash & Grab formula is everything: a blend of ribcap, chuck, and aged beef sourced from renowned butcher HG Walter, smashed onto a hot grill to achieve that perfect lacy, crispy brown crust and deeply sapid centre.
On our Saturday visit, we savoured the bacon cheeseburger at its best, each bite rich with deeply savoury punch and tempered by house-made pickles together with the kitchen’s secret sauce.

We also ordered the chorizo jam cheeseburger that was the standout of our evening’s meal. The pairing of the beef and chorizo delivered a tongue-coating richness that felt like a warm hug.

Accompanying our burgers were golden fries loaded with a punchy mix of pickled and crispy shallots, jalapeños, and molten cheese. We also tucked into the house fries topped with the same smoky chorizo found in the burger. Each forkful felt like a testament to Sam’s unfussy yet exacting take on burgers and chips. Simple, yet undeniably elevated. We finally ended the meal with the warm chocolate brownie, topped with toasted marshmallows, and vanilla ice cream. It was truly the best end to the night.

Paired with a frosty Tommy’s Margarita and a crisp pint of Sam’s Lager, it only heightened the pure, unadulterated gratification of the meal.
Burgers aside, Sam’s Kitchen is a place where laughter and connection are the focus. Glasses clinked throughout the service, friends traded warm greetings, and couples shared sides with a visible, tender affection. Burgers at Sam’s are elevated but never pretentious, making it the epitome of soulful indulgence and the gold standard of neighbourhood comfort.
Day-to-Night: Sam’s Gets it Right
What binds these two experiences together is Sam’s instinctive understanding of timing, mood, and flavour. While Sam’s Waterside embraces a considered and calm ethos, the energy at Sam’s Kitchen shifts toward something more visceral where bold, flavour-packed comfort food takes centre stage.
In a city where dining often feels curated — fast versus refined, casual versus occasion-led — Sam’s delivers both seamlessly. The settings are distinct, but the commitment to quality and impeccable service remain consistent. From the vitality of an end-of-week payoff to the serenity of a riverside brunch, both destinations are truly worth visiting at any hour, which makes Sam’s a proof of versatility that London dining so rarely achieves.
Because from day to night, Sam’s gets it right.
