Everybody knows that the perfect way to chill out this summer – is with a gorgeous cocktail. But what if you could mix up your own without needing to venture out to a bar? You may think that mixology is a fine art that should be left to the bartenders, but why should they have all the fun! Whether you want to shake up some margaritas for your next BBQ or surprise your boyfriend on date night with his favourite drink….a cocktail masterclass may be right up your street. One of our writers who loves a good Negroni and a perfect Dark N Stormy is our lifestyle writer Jenna. We sent her for a very special lesson in all things molecular at The Alchemist @ Trinity Leeds….
Arriving at The Alchemist (Trinity, Leeds) I felt as welcome as always. Being no stranger to the gorgeous interior and unrivaled playlist, this has always been one of my favourite city centre bars. The thing I love about this Living Ventures concept, is that it never really feels like a chain. Forget about the tacky hen parties and the illuminous pink cocktail on arrival, this Masterclass feels more like the chefs table at a top London restauraunt (minus the three course meal– obvs).
I spotted one of my fellow House of Coco writers Ellenor sat at the table and the usual eeeeeeeek and hugs went on whilst I sipped on my welcome drink. A world away from the pre-mixed jugs you get at other Masterclasses, this was a twist on the classic bellini and was beautiful. As I moonlight in Marketing for a Champagne Bar, I’m no stranger to the classic Bellini, but I loved the twist of different liqueurs. Georgia (Business Development Manager) handed us each our very own Alchemist hip-flask to take home as a memento and we were introduced to Andy, our very own private bartender for the evening, at our very own private bar.
Before we get to the drinks, I have to interject. The food you get with the Masterclass is UH-MAZE-ING. Forget limp pizzas and cheese on cocktail sticks, the food is definitely not an after-thought. It was so good we actually delayed our class so we could devour it all and take a million pictures. Andy was super patient whilst we scoffed gorgeous gyoza & beer battered prawns, bbq wings & the cheeeeeeesiest nachos. If that wasn’t enough, we also had some classic bar snacks in the form of olives (those amazing big green ones!) and warm salted almonds. It’s nice when you don’t feel rushed and you can really enjoy the experience….
First up was the chance to make the brand new Key Lime Pie. A striking green concoction that is definitely for the sour fruit lovers with Midori to thank for the colour! As this is a lesson in molecular mixology, of course theres going to be some kind of science-esque tools involved, and a Key Lime pie needs baking right? Right.
After decanting the emerald liquid into the martini glasses we add the meringue topping and its time to cook. Advising us to wear a soldering mask, we take to the creamy topping with nothing less than – a naked flame. Only The Alchemist would be brave enough to let the general public at a gas lighter in the middle of a bar – but I praise them for their creativity! It was ridiculously fun and we couldn’t stop laughing the entire way through.
We went on to make some pretty impressive drinks – pictures can be seen below – and we were pretty tipsy by the end. In my opinion, it’s the perfect way to kick off a weekend with the girls or a really interesting date? Either way, from just £30 a head for the amount of fun we had, it’s well worth a look at.
