At Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort & Ranch in British Columbia, nothing is done for show. The horses roam free, the forest is in mid-rebirth, and the stars shine brighter than ever through an uninterrupted canopy. There is a quiet power here, not just in the land itself, but in the woman who stewards it.
Fourth-generation rancher Allyson Rogers has spent more than three decades nurturing Siwash Lake, but the summer of 2017 marked a turning point. When one of the most extreme wildfires in Canadian history swept through the region, Allyson chose to stay behind — not out of bravado, but out of instinct. With dwindling evacuation support and a herd of horses who had never left the land, she led them to their favourite pasture by the lake and stayed by their side until the flames passed. Every horse survived, and so with them, the heart of the ranch.
Today, Siwash Lake is a place transformed, a luxury wilderness retreat rooted in regeneration, resilience, and deep connection. Guests come to ride, to hike, to stargaze — but more than anything, to reconnect with themselves through the raw beauty of nature.
In this exclusive interview, Allyson shares what it means to live in sync with the land, why now is a once-in-a-lifetime moment to visit, and how her unique Synergy™ with Horses program is quietly redefining the meaning of wellness travel.

Equine Connection and Wellness at Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort
As a fourth-generation steward of the land at Siwash Lake, how has your family heritage influenced the way you’ve developed the ranch and its equine philosophy today?
Siwash Lake has been in our family for over three decades, and the deep connection to this land has shaped everything. We’ve always believed that humans are stewards, not consumers, of nature — and that includes the way we care for our horses. They’re not just animals here; they’re part of the family.
The Siwash Synergy™ with Horses program is a signature offering at the ranch. Can you tell us what makes this approach to riding and horsemanship so transformational for guests?
Siwash Synergy™ is all about developing a meaningful relationship with the horse — based on intuition, trust, and presence. Guests learn to connect with horses in a way that’s not performance-driven, but deeply personal. We see people leave more confident, calm, and connected — not just to the horse, but to themselves.

How do you go about pairing guests with horses and tailoring treks or training sessions to their abilities and needs?
We take the time to understand each guest’s experience level and energy, and then we match them with a horse that complements that. Our horses are intuitive and free-range, which makes them especially attuned to human emotion. It’s less about ability and more about building trust.
From Wildfire to Renewal at Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort
In 2017, a devastating wildfire swept through your land. Can you share how you protected your horses and livestock during that emergency, and what that experience taught you?
It ended up being quite an easy decision — when evacuation orders came, we chose to stay. The horses had never left the ranch, and taking them to rodeo pens three hours away felt wrong, so we placed them in their favourite pasture by the lake, stayed with them, and prepared them as best we could. We warned them daily that something was coming as the fire grew closer, which kept them calm, and in the end, not one was harmed.

What has the regeneration of the land looked like since the wildfire? Are there signs of new life and biodiversity returning that particularly excite you?
It’s been extraordinary. Fireweed came first, then aspen groves, wild roses, and berry bushes. Now we’re seeing moose, deer, frogs, river otters, and even the western painted turtle. The land is healing in real time — and teaching us so much in the process.
The Fire Ecology Walk is a great addition. What inspired it, and what kind of experience can guests expect?
The Fire Ecology Walk is close to my heart. It’s a guided journey through the regenerating landscape — led by people who lived through the wildfire, including myself. Guests walk among blooming fireweed and blackened tree trunks, learning how fire shapes the land and how wildlife — like bears, frogs, turtles, birds of prey — respond. This year, we saw black bears with their cubs for the first time.
It’s raw and beautiful — and you get to witness something very few people will: a forest mid-transformation, before nature fully reclaims it. Several sets of waterfalls tumble into a sapphire lake nestled within a volcanic crater, and the forces of nature are profound. It’s a chance to reflect, reconnect, and walk through a real-time story of resilience.
You’re developing a new adventure for 2026. Can you share more?
Yes, we’re working on developing the fire ecology hike into a full-day adventure that includes a lakeshore picnic in the crater, paddle boarding to the main waterfall, and a soak in our natural jacuzzi — the bubbly pool created by a back eddy in the river at the second set of falls. This will be an incredible, immersive experience in nature.

Rugged Luxury Experiences at Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort
Your horses are free-roaming and deeply connected to the land. How does that lifestyle influence their temperament, training, and role in the guest experience?
Because our horses live naturally on the land year-round, they’re grounded, resilient, and deeply aware. They’re not barn-bound or overworked — they’re partners in the guest experience. This creates a calmer, more intuitive relationship between horse and rider.
What does a typical day at Siwash look like for a guest — especially one who’s come to reset or recharge?
Every day is completely bespoke, but there’s a natural rhythm to life here, and we go with it. Mornings might begin with open-air yoga or a quiet coffee on your private deck, followed by a horseback session or a guided nature walk. Afternoons could include kayaking, wild swimming, or a nap in your tent’s hammock. Evenings are often spent by the firepit or at Star Camp™, watching the Milky Way rise. It’s the kind of place where you can do everything, or nothing, and feel restored either way.

What role do you think equine experiences like those at Siwash Lake play in modern wellness and reconnecting people with nature?
People are craving connection nowadays — with nature, with animals, with themselves. Horses offer all of that, and at Siwash Lake, riding isn’t just about the destination; it’s about being present, building trust, and experiencing the natural world in an entirely new way.
How do you balance luxury hospitality with rugged adventure at the ranch — and how do the horses fit into that balance?
We call it “rugged luxury.” The accommodations and service are world-class, but the experience is rooted in the authenticity of the land. Our horses embody that — beautiful, intuitive, and offering complete authenticity.

Sleeping Beneath the Stars at Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort
Star Camp™ is a uniquely luxurious glamping experience. How did it come about, and what makes it special?
Star Camp™ was born from the aftermath of the wildfire. With the canopy gone, we suddenly had this jaw-dropping, 360-degree view of the sky. So, we leaned into it, designed ridge-top canvas tents with special windows to the stars — custom-designed skylights — a wood-fired hot tub, and SkyMaster Pro binoculars.
It’s luxury in the wild — but what really makes it special is what you hear at night: Star Camp is in a meadow, and at night you can hear everything from coyotes howling in the distance to loons calling and the whinny of horses in the ranch pastures… and the never-ending silence between stars.
Guests often say they feel changed after a stay at Siwash. Why do you think that is?
It’s the combination of nature, presence, and genuine connection. We live in such a fast-paced, digital world, at Siwash Lake you’re unplugged. You’re bonding with a horse. You’re moving through landscapes shaped by fire and renewal — it’s deeply grounding. I think people remember who they were when they’re here.
When you step away from Siwash Lake, where in the world calls to you most — whether it’s a cherished favorite you return to again and again, or a bucket-list destination you’ve yet to explore?
When I step away from Siwash Lake, I head for the high mountains of British Columbia with my hiking buddies, Lisa and Debbie. I find the thrill of exploration and the physical challenge to be very restorative during these backpacking and wilderness camping adventures. I’m very fortunate that my son can run the ranch, and I do a trip like this every summer. Headed to the Chilcotin next week, in fact!
