The founder of website SpareRoom has decided to rent the empty bedrooms in his £3 million home on a ‘pay what you can afford basis’!
Rupert Hunt, Founder of SpareRooms is looking for 2 or 3 housemates to join him in a very creaky, possibly haunted house in the heart of Spitalfields. The five-floor Georgian house has six bedrooms and comes complete with a music room, garden room and disco lounge. Of the two bedrooms up for grabs, one is in the basement and the other is on the first floor of the property.
Incredibly, Rupert is offering the rooms on a ‘pay what you can afford’ basis. He writes on the site; “I’m far more interested in finding the right people to share with, who I’ll enjoy having around and add something to my life, than maximising my rent (and market rent round here would price some people out). So if you’re my perfect flatmate and happen to be volunteering and can only afford £100 per month, I’d sooner take you over someone who can pay full whack but who isn’t quite right.”
Rupert joked that the house, is currently shared with a small mouse, a bear, two peacocks (and various other birds and animals), is in a quiet spot between Spitalfields Market and Brick Lane.
“I’m not after flatmates who just want cheaper rent though. You’ll need to genuinely want to share with me – for your benefit as much as mine: The people you live with can be the difference between you dreading going home each day or having the time of your life. Even if this is the house of your dreams, I might be your flatmate from hell :)”
This incredible venture isn’t just for Rupert to find new friends as he will film the whole journey, to show people the SpareRoom process and that it can be fun, he says; “living with the right people beats living alone.”
