Dorothy Majcher Owsiana is the founder of Chic by dmo, a natural skin and bodycare brand that she founded.
From humble beginnings, she has made her way to the top and her story is one to be admired.
Here, we spent some time with Dorothy to find out more…
Tell us about the journey that led you to launching your brand, CHIC by dmo…
It was 2017, I was at work, in the salon, checking products as usual, thinking about what to bring into our beauty salon to make clients’ experience more luxurious or different from other usual nail studios. Since I have been a regular client myself of nail bars and beauty places, I knew what products were being used on clients and mainly, they all fell into the same suppliers’ “drawer” including our salon - Scissors Palace. The salon, being a great establishment for over 40 years was based in one of the wealthiest areas in London. I thought I had to create a bespoke service inclusive of very good quality skin/body care products. I felt that I owed it to the Scissors Palace customers. This was the beginning of CHIC by dmo organic products’ venture.
Where did your love for natural products come from and why was this important to you?
The world we live in has changed dramatically, directing us towards outer, often artificial looks, which are meant to attract. People are less likely to pick up a product that does not have beautiful packaging and is less well known. Sadly, this is the world we live in today. Back in the day, 30+ years ago, there was no Instagramable product (since there was no instagram), but at the same time it wasn’t about the look. It was about the quality of the product, its purpose and effectiveness . The simpler the better was usually the most effective. Hence why all these homemade mixtures our mothers and grandmothers introduced us to back then (whether it was a beetroot mix for hair growth , cucumber facial or pure aloe vera extract for pimples) always worked. The need of delivering a product that would be as simple as those “old day magic potions” and treat the skin in the kindest way possible, grew on me strongly. Many skin products used in fast pace places are water based and injected with unidentified perfumes. Not only that but I found those to be irritating to my skin and also drying.
CHIC skin products are oil based. They consist of shea butter, almond oil, grape seed oil, vitamin E and panthenol. Not only are they very rich in hydrating but that also protect against pollution and any radicals. CHIC products are vegan, family friendly, without any preservatives, sulphates or paragons . They’re all naturally & organically sourced in Poland.
How do you want people to feel when they use your products?
I want them to feel good about themselves, to love the nourishment without feeling the guilt of “cheating on their skin” (which usually comes with overpriced , beautifully packed products that don’t deliver as promised). I want CHIC products’ customers to take their time when applying butter or cream, massaging it onto the skin, so they get the most benefits of creating beautiful healthy glowing skin as a result. Beauty therapists at Scissors Palace create a very bespoke and relaxing experience for all their beauty customers. We get amazing feedback from our returning clients, who feel the quality of the simple ingredients used by CHIC products.
Of all of the things you have achieved, what’s your proudest moment and why?
Professionally it’s creating and launching CHIC by dmo AND also becoming Scissors Palace owner. It’s all something I would have only dreamt of 14 years ago, when I first joined the salon.
Looking back since launching the business, is there anything you would do differently?
There is always a thought at the back of your mind, that maybe you should have done this or that differently but in my honest opinion - I created the brand myself from scratch - meaning it is as original and pure as my initial idea, which I think is very important.
I am obviously open to changes, I love creating and working on new projects, so you never know what may happen next, but NO, I would not do anything differently
What do you do when you are lacking creativity?
I am lucky to be around people on a daily basis, which I find to be a great source of creativity and drive. Whether that be the way they dress, talk about life or behave. I am a good observer. Reading books, listening to music and watching the sky does the trick for me when looking for creativity.
What is your go-to quote when lacking motivation?
“Keep going, keep growing.” Mindset is everything and I never let my brain cells hold me back from growing . We all have good and bad days, but it is your energy that will set the tone of your days. I choose good energy, regardless.
Our readers love to travel, what destination is on your must visit list?
I haven't been to Bali so maybe it’s on the cards in near future.
What does self care mean to you?
Self Love!
