Located in the heart of London and on Covent Garden’s Southampton Street, Abuelo is an Australian-meets-South-American coffee house and kitchen serving light, fresh, produce-led meals in-house or take away from 8am ’til late, and a variety of single origin speciality coffees.
The restaurant’s journey began in 1987 with five of Sydney and Melbourne’s best cafes and restaurants, Zigolini’s and Trezini’s, which were part of the early development of coffee and food culture of Australia. As part of the beginning of what became Australia’s now world famous ‘coffee culture’, the team created a number of coffee staples, such as the ‘Babyccino’- which has since spread world-wide and is a familiar phrase that is heard here, there and everywhere!
Abuelo’s modern menu is designed to reflect the owner’s Australian and Argentinian background and features fresh, organic, uncomplicated food for all-day dining. The absolute highlights of the à la carte menu are the honey whipped mascarpone on sourdough with fresh figs & crushed pistachios, and the peanut salsa chicken salad with a sesame miso dressing. Our #TeamCoco tip would be to also try the Asada burger – it oozes with flavours and is one of the best burgers we’ve tasted in a long time! The cocktail menu is also brilliant with a selection of coffee based cocktails for the caffeine lovers and for those who want something slightly lighter – there are delicious fruit and floral cocktails. The wine list also highlights the Argentina and Australia fusion.
With the owner’s backgrounds in architecture and design, Abuelo brought their architectural eye and food styling, and combined it with the casual, friendly culture of Australian hospitality to create something that was ‘high/low’; casual but still thoughtful in its design. Visitors can take a seat in the cosy sofa corner or at the ‘kitchen table’ and connect with friends and strangers alike.
What makes Abuelo so special is the understated nature of the restaurant, yet the quality of everything. It’s a relaxed space but everything has been considered – the design, the food and the general vibe makes it a winner in London’s ongoing restaurant race.
