Over the years Britain has become rather well known for its eccentric characters, dating back hundreds of years from Beau Brummel to Vivienne Westwood and many in-between. So what is an eccentric? According to the Oxford dictionary an eccentric is ‘A person of unconventional and slightly strange views or behaviour’, however the term can cover a number of mannerisms, habits and peculiar tastes or styles. This was never a particularly kind word to use to describe someone however of late it is seen as a compliment and many people see individuality and quirkiness as acceptable and endearing traits.
Being an eccentric within interior design can set you apart from the rest and helps to create a personal identity. Nobody wants to have the same bedroom or living room as their friends but it is happening all too often. It is of course not for everyone, and most people are happy to follow suit with what is on trend but for the many eccentrics in the UK design is just another way of expressing themselves, so why not give it a go? An eccentric interior can encompass anything and everything that the owner of the room is interested in, from displays of collections, heirlooms, pieces of historical reference to modern day design; they combine to create and share the story of the owner’s life.
Everybody has the ability to be an eccentric in design, so unleash your inner quirks and embrace your individuality within your home. You never know unless you try!
