When glaucoma sufferers started using the eye-drop drug Lumigan eight years ago, who knew there’d be beauty benefits: longer, thicker, darker eyelashes. After many clinical trials, the eye drops are now marketed it for its lash-boosting magic and available to those with underdeveloped eyelashes from the UK based company Love Your Lashes. Bigger, better lashes but without the falsies or extensions? This sounded too good to be true, so we had our beauty editor Scarlett trial the eye serum for a few weeks to see if the reports of this magic, lash-growing serum were true…
Much the way Botox was found to work for wrinkles, the same story is true for Lumigan, the medical name for the Love Your Lashes serum. Botox was discovered by an eye doctor treating patients for eye tics. The doctor noticed not only did Botox injections stop the twitching but the patients also had less wrinkles around their eyes. Lumigan’s story is almost identical. Lumigan’s active ingredient is Bimatoprost which is an ingredient that is used for treating glaucoma. Just as with Botox, ophthalmologists just happened to notice that when their patients started using this medication as eye drops that not only did their glaucoma get better – but their eyelashes grew longer, darker, and fuller! Since then, Love your Lashes eyelash enhancer has been used for some time in the US and UK as a prescription-only cosmetic treatment for growing amazing lashes.

So how do we use the Love Your Lashes serum?
Love Your Lashes comes in a small eye drop bottle, beautifully packaged in orange ribbon with disposable applicators also included. Im told one bottle should last you about 8 weeks (which mine pretty much did) but you need two bottles to see maximum effects (16 weeks). You apply it by dabbing it on the upper lash line each night with the sterile applicator. The serum spreads to your lower lash line automatically as you blink. According to the manufacturer, you should never apply it in your eye or onto your lower lid. Before you apply, your face must be clean and your makeup and contact lenses removed.
I found that their wasn’t enough applicators for applying the serum every night with a new applicator for 16 weeks so I ended up using one applicator a week and just keeping it clean which worked fine and didn’t cause me any allergic reactions or infections, which could happen with re-use.
And apply it carefully, since Love Your Lashes may promote hair growth on other skin areas.

And what are the results?
After two months of nightly use, you may begin to see results. After three or four months, you should definitely see results. My lashes are not lashes I would ever say are short, they are pretty long but very sparse and I started to notice at about week 6 my lashes changing. They have become much thicker – i don’t think each hair is thicker but i have new hairs coming through all along the top and bottom lashes (even some on the inside eye near my nose that I’ve had to pluck out!) and the most notable change is the curliness of my lashes! I always thought i had pretty curly lashes any way having naturally curly hair but now this is something else, my lashes are that long and curly that the outer corner lashes are now curling back on themselves. This isn’t something Love Your Lashes state may happen but a welcomed effect as most women would love to have curlier lashes as well as length and thickness! Some reports state getting sore, red eyes after continuous use of the serum but this isn’t something that I’ve found and I feel its a pretty safe product to use.
Love Your Lashes isn’t strictly just to be used on your eyelashes – it can grow hair anywhere so Ive also been trialling it on my eyebrows as these definitely need some work (over plucking in the 90’s is to blame!) and my lashes were pretty good to start with so this is somewhere I could really test the product. I must say I’ve been wowed by the results on my eyebrows, more so than any other beauty product I’ve tested – and there have been quite a few. My eyebrows do not grow outside of their over plucked shape and for the first time since being 15, I’ve got new hairs in bald patches where hairs should be. Yes they might be really fine and tiny – but there are definitely new hairs and they are creating a small, welcomed shadow in what would normally be bald and heavily covered in brow pencil. The existing eyebrows I’ve always had have also become much longer, thicker and darker (I had to trim them for the first time – ever!) so the overall quality of my brows have definitely improved.

The only one niggle I’ve found with the Love Your Lashes is I have had hair grow in unwanted places, most notably on the top of my cheekbones just under my eye sockets. I don’t know whether this is because I’m dark haired any way and I wonder if you were fair whether you just wouldn’t get it or it would be less noticeable, but it definitely wasn’t there before. Saying this, its something i would happily live with for the dramatic positive difference it has created to my eyebrows and lashes!
Love Your Lashes is one beauty product I would recommend to every woman who has eyelash or eyebrow concerns and wants that little extra oomph! Its not cheap, at £70 for one bottle and £110 for two but its probably worth it and is something I will be purchasing to keep my brows breeding!
