The Mayfair Chippy has two locations for all-day British dining: its flagship in Mayfair, established in 2015 and proudly holding a coveted 1 AA Rosette, and now a new location in Knightsbridge, tucked away but with iconic Harrods as a neighbour.
Just a short walk from Knightsbridge station, the Mayfair Chippy offers a chic, welcoming, and buzzy atmosphere, merging the energy of restaurant, gourmet seafood eatery, upmarket takeaway joint, and swanky bar.
It’s the kind of place where you can drop by for a solo lunch, bring visiting friends, enjoy a quick bite after a spot of shopping, or settle in for cocktails and oysters after dark. We visited just ahead of National Fish & Chip Day which is celebrated annually on the first Friday of June in the UK. This day celebrates the iconic British dish, honouring its significance and culinary heritage.
A Sophisticated Spin on a British Classic at The Mayfair Chippy Knightsbridge
The Mayfair Chippy Knightsbridge serves up a sophisticated take on Britain’s beloved fish and chips, and the menu is complemented by an impressive and wide-ranging seafood offering. Since its inception into the UK roughly 200 years ago in the East End of London, fish and chips is a dish staple throughout the country. Although with humble origins in the East, in this instance, our taste buds headed West.
The restaurant offers fantastic nods to Britain’s iconic duo but without feeling remotely gimmicky or kitsch – think monochrome-tiled flooring, bottles of HP sauce dotted around, an area for Friday takeaways, and chip shop curry sauce in abundance. Trendy, traditional, but not touristy. Until the 1980s, fish and chips were famously served wrapped in old newspaper, and there were nods to this quirky fact when the main event was served.
Highlights include the Soft Shell Crab Burger, fresh oysters with all the trimmings, a Fish Finger Butty, and a Kedgeree Scotch Egg small plate with smoked haddock and spicy yet tart curried mayonnaise. A standout was the utterly delicious prawn toast, which has to be the best in London. There is responsibly sourced Cornish cod and haddock on the menu, and the fish and chips are available with alcohol and gluten-free batter.
There’s also plenty for non-fish eaters on the Mayfair Chippy menu, namely the rare-breed battered sausage and an array of vegan options that don’t feel like afterthoughts. The delicious dishes are all washed down with an absolutely cracking wine list that also features some sparkling and still wine options from nearby English vineyards.
Indulge in the ‘Afternoon Sea’ Experience at The Mayfair Chippy
The Mayfair Chippy Knightsbridge also offers the ‘Afternoon Sea’ experience, another take on an equally treasured British classic. Available to pre-order 48 hours in advance for a minimum of two guests, priced at £48 per person. The three-tiered spread of seafood delights includes crab bruschetta, mussels, oysters, and king prawns, with freshly baked sourdough.
This unique dining experience is available at both the Mayfair and Knightsbridge locations of The Mayfair Chippy, all served in a quintessentially British atmosphere.
The restaurant also has a Gin Bar serving a selection of classic cocktails and an outdoor dining space, ideal for the warmer months. Crowd pleaser gins feature from Sipsmith to Tanqueray. London favourites, such as as Hoxton Gin and Marylebone Gin, are also on offer, but the menu has also sourced some further afield choices, such as The Botanist Islay Dry Gin from remote Scotland.
Whoever said British food was bland clearly hasn’t taken the bait at The Mayfair Chippy. An elevated homage to the humble chip shop that feels right at home in one of London’s most polished postcodes.
