The Pig and Butcher: The best pub in Islington proves why British pubs will never go out of style

Pig and Butcher; the best pub in Islington

There’s something undeniably comforting about an English pub. The promise of crackling fires in winter, long lunches that effortlessly turn into dinner, perfectly poured pints and food that somehow tastes even better when enjoyed beneath low-beamed ceilings.

But if your idea of pub dining still involves predictable menus and uninspiring Sunday roasts, The Pig and Butcher is here to change your mind.

Occupying a striking Victorian pub dating back to the mid-1800s, when Islington was still little more than a village on London’s outskirts, this much-loved neighbourhood institution effortlessly blends heritage with contemporary British dining. Once surrounded by fields where farmers rested their livestock before continuing to Smithfield Market, today the building tells a new story; one centred around exceptional seasonal produce, thoughtful cooking and an atmosphere that feels both sophisticated and wonderfully relaxed.

It’s exactly why so many locals consider it the best pub in Islington.

Despite visiting on a Monday evening, every table was occupied, the bar buzzed with conversation. That, perhaps more than anything else, is the mark of a true neighbourhood gem. It’s the kind of place people return to again and again, whether celebrating something special or simply looking for an excellent dinner after work.

While The Pig and Butcher certainly elevates the traditional pub experience, it never tips into pretense. There are no unnecessary flourishes or theatrical presentations here. Instead, the focus remains firmly on outstanding British ingredients, expertly prepared and allowed to speak for themselves.

That philosophy begins long before the food reaches your table. Every morning, the team hand-selects fruit and vegetables from New Spitalfields Market before collecting meat directly from nearby Smithfield Market. Everything is butchered in-house in the restaurant’s own dedicated butchery, allowing complete control over quality and ensuring the daily-changing menu reflects whatever is at its seasonal best.

Our meal began with two beautifully balanced starters. The Tenderstem Broccoli with Lemon Sabayon and Parmesan was deceptively simple yet packed with flavour. The vibrant greens retained their bite while the silky lemon sabayon added brightness without overwhelming the dish, finished with generous shavings of parmesan for richness.

Alongside it, the 45-Day Aged Beef Tartare with Egg Yolk and Thyme Crostini demonstrated exactly why simplicity can be so effective. Delicate, beautifully seasoned and exceptionally fresh, every element felt carefully considered, with the crisp crostini providing just enough texture against the silky richness of the beef.

For mains, the kitchen continued to impress.

The Cornish Cod Fillet arrived perfectly cooked, its delicate flakes resting in a light fish velouté alongside a vibrant spring salad that celebrated the season without overcomplicating the plate.

The lamb, meanwhile, showcased everything The Pig and Butcher does best. Served with grilled baby gem, chimichurri, anchovies, alliums and a deeply flavoured lamb jus, the dish struck a beautiful balance between richness and freshness. The quality of the meat spoke for itself, while each accompaniment adding complexity without stealing the spotlight.

Dessert brought the meal to a gentle, nostalgic close. The Rice Pudding with Strawberry and Clotted Ice Cream transformed a familiar British classic into something quietly luxurious.

Of course, excellent food is only one part of what makes somewhere memorable. The Pig and Butcher also boasts an impressive wine programme, featuring bottles sourced from both family-owned vineyards and respected producers around the world, with a list that changes regularly alongside the menu.

For larger gatherings, the first-floor private dining room offers something rather special. Complete with an Aga oven, wood-burning stove and farmhouse-inspired interiors, it feels less like hiring a restaurant space and more like gathering around someone’s beautifully restored country kitchen. Seating up to 24 guests, with generous sharing feasts served down the centre of the table, it’s easy to imagine birthdays, anniversaries and long-awaited reunions unfolding here.

And if The Pig and Butcher leaves you wanting more, its equally charming sister restaurant, Bistro Sable, is just a short stroll away. Offering a different take on French bistro dining while sharing the same high quality ingredients and warm hospitality, it’s well worth adding to your Islington dining list.

In a city overflowing with gastropubs, The Pig and Butcher stands apart because it never feels like it’s trying too hard. It simply gets the fundamentals exactly right: exceptional ingredients, genuine hospitality, beautiful surroundings and food you’ll still be thinking about days later.

If you’re searching for the best pub in Islington, The Pig and Butcher should sit firmly at the top of your list.
