Regular or need-based visits to a gynaecologist is a part of being a woman. But a first visit to a gynaecologist can make you anxious and nervous.

Regular or need-based visits to a gynaecologist is a part of being a woman. But a first visit to a gynaecologist can make you anxious and nervous. Doctors recommend that you schedule your first visit to a gynaecologist between the ages of 13-15 years – the sooner the better. While the thought of your first visit to the OB-GYN can be overwhelming, knowing what to expect beforehand will help make your first visit pleasant and a comfortable experience.

Here we offer you a list of important things to know before your first gynae visit.

What to Expect on Your First Visit?

There may not be a particular reason for you to visit your OB-GYN for the first time. In this visit you will find out what to expect at future visits and get information about how to stay healthy. You also may have certain exams. You need to focus on general information, prevention, and any treatment you may need for painful or irregular periods, or any other gynaecologic problems, on your first visit.

You Will Not Need a Pelvic Exam Yet Before You Are 21

If it’s your first visit to the gynaecologist as a teenager, you will not undergo the routine Pap Smear test (screening for cervical cancer). A pap smear or a routine pelvic exam is done for patients 21 years or above.

Drink Water Before Your Appointment

As you would need to undergo an in-office urinalysis to check for infections etc, it is better you drink water before your visit.

Your Doctor Can Prescribe Birth Control Pills Without an Internal Exam

If you test negative for pregnancy your doctor can allow you to start oral contraception right away. A pelvic exam is not required to prescribe hormonal contraception (birth control pills).

You Can Take a Family Member Along with You

If the first visit makes you too anxious, you can always take someone with you to make the experience comfortable. You can choose to have a companion present for your examinations.

Be Open and Direct with Your Communication and Expect the Same

In order to provide productive and effective healthcare it is necessary for you to establish a clear line of communication with your doctor. Ready yourself for an open, direct and confidential communication with your doctor about your health, sexual habits and history, and any concerns you may have.

Finding the Right Gynaecologist

For the reason mentioned above, it is extremely important that you are completely comfortable with your gynaecologist. Trusting her is as important. Instead of just choosing a doctor off your insurance list, try to choose a clinic with experienced professionals. Alana Healthcare Sydney is one such all-women healthcare outfit that has a team of world-recognised gynaecologists with surgical and clinical expertise and modern medical approach to your problems.

Taking care of your health should be one your first priorities in life. A very first visit to the gynaecologist can be somewhat overwhelming. We hope the list will help you have a pleasant, productive, comfortable experience with your doctor.
