Tiaras & Toast: Why I Ditched the Plus One for Combermere Abbey

Discover the allure of Combermere Abbey with Laura Bartlett. This historic estate, transformed into a luxurious retreat, offers a perfect escape for the independent traveler.

Combermere Abbey, a majestic estate nestled in the heart of the English countryside, has stood the test of time, its imposing silhouette a testament to centuries of history. Once a Cistercian monastery, it has evolved into a private residence, its grandeur and opulence preserved with meticulous care by its current owners, the Callander Beckett family.

Laura Bartlett, renowned for her fearless spirit and penchant for the extraordinary, decided to trade the city’s hustle for the abbey’s tranquility. Seeking a solo escape from the ordinary, she embarked on a journey to this historic gem, eager to experience the allure of a life lived in luxury and independence…

Who says fairy tales are reserved for duos? I recently ditched the waiting game for Prince Charming and embarked on a solo sojourn to the opulent Combermere Abbey. Yes, darlings, I traded the potential awkwardness of a honeymoon suite for the unadulterated luxury of the north wing, a space usually reserved for amorous couples.

I am the GOAT when it comes to putting myself at the top of my to-do list but this was a solo splurge like no other. As I sank into the plush embrace of my four-poster bed in this historic gem, steeped in nearly 900 years of history, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of empowerment. This wasn’t just a holiday; it was a coronation of self-love.

Combermere Abbey, once a Cistercian monastery, has been transformed into a breathtaking estate under the passionate stewardship of Sarah Callander Beckett. Her dedication to restoring this architectural masterpiece is palpable. Every corner of the abbey whispers tales of its illustrious past, from its monastic origins to its grandeur as a Gothic revival country house.

Beyond the abbey walls, the estate offers endless opportunities for exploration. Lose yourself in the sprawling parkland, perfect for leisurely strolls or picnics. Discover hidden corners, ancient trees and perhaps even catch a glimpse of the local wildlife. For those seeking a touch of adventure, there are opportunities for cycling, horse riding and even fishing in the nearby River Dee.

And for those who wish to extend their stay, the estate boasts ten self-catering holiday cottages, each offering a tranquil retreat amidst stunning surroundings. A delightful café and award-winning gin distillery, located on the edge of the estate, provide additional opportunities to savour the local flavours.

Combermere Abbey is conveniently situated, with Whitchurch train station just a ten-minute journey away and Manchester Airport reachable within an hour.

During my stay, Stephan, the Abbey’s seasoned house manager, became my unexpected confidant. He is the house manager who practically has the Abbey’s history tattooed on his soul (seriously, the man’s been there over 20 years!). Over breakfasts fit for a queen (served solo, of course), we swapped stories that would make a duchess blush.

Turns out, even honeymoons aren’t always the picture of perfection. Stephan regaled me with tales of brides left breakfasting alone while their grooms nursed epic hangovers. Talk about a reality check!

But this wasn’t just about gossip and grandeur. It was about reclaiming my time, indulging in a little self-pampering, and proving that the finest things in life are best enjoyed on your own terms. So, ladies, if you’re dreaming of a getaway that’s as luxurious as it is liberating, let Combermere Abbey be your next destination.

Trust me, you’ll leave feeling like the queen you truly are. After all, sometimes, the most enchanting fairy tale is the one you write for yourself. Embark on your own happily ever after and find out more via their website combermereabbey.co.uk.
