The world of streetwear fashion has continued to evolve at lightning speed, with influences from around the world coming together to redefine what modern streetwear really means. While the women’s fashion industry is gradually starting to catch up, streetwear has really been a man’s playground.
With that in mind, Judas Sinned takes a look at just some of the influential figures who have played a part in helping to redefine streetwear over the years.
Kanye West
In recent times, Kanye West has become possibly the most influential figure in the world of streetwear. While it took some time for the fashion industry to take him seriously, Yeezy is now worth around $1 billion; a far cry from the $53 million debt he was in during 2016.
Kanye first made his move into the fashion industry in 2009, launching his first Yeezy shoe line with Nike before bringing it to Adidas in 2013. By 2015, he had debuted his first Yeezy Season which has continued to become more anticipated each year.
With a wealth of beige and neutral designs, the Yeezy fashion line is something consumers have gone crazy for; probably part in thanks to the Kardashian clan wearing the styles on a daily basis too.
What is more impressive is that Kanye still owns 100% of Yeezy.
Virgil Abloh
Virgil Abloh has a close association with Kanye West; they both interned at Fendi together in 2009. However, his career over the last few years has completely redefined his approach to the fashion industry.
He founded Off-White in 2013 which is now viewed as a luxury streetwear label; a phrase that has introduced the new concept of blending street-ready clothing with high-end fashion. The first Off-White fashion show took place for at the women’s Paris Fashion Week in 2014, and was selected as a finalist for the prestigious LVMH Prize.
By 2018, Abloh had been appointed the artistic director for Louis Vuitton’s menswear, making history by blending the lines of streetwear and luxury fashion. He has collaborated with the likes of Ikea and Nike, and designed a lot of the album covers for Kanye West over the years.
Justin Bieber
Probably not a name you expected to see, but Justin Bieber’s comeback has had much bigger impact than just music. At the end of 2018, Bieber launched a fashion line called Drew House; a unisex collection of tees, hoodies and other streetwear staples.
Many of the styles have drawn a comparison to the Yeezy styles, with neutral tones and oversized fits. With a recognisable smiley face logo, it has been seen across a number of celeb’s Instagram feeds. With simple details and easy-to-wear designs, it’s no wonder it’s a sell-out range.
It’s also a great example of the influence a celebrity can have over style; Justin Bieber’s habit of wearing complimentary hotel slippers sparked the idea to make Drew branded styles, that now resell on eBay for around $300.
Pharrell Williams
An icon for many different reasons, Pharrell Williams has had a hand in fashion for some time now. He owns clothing lines Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream, which have been going since 2005.
Pharrell has also worked with brands including Adidas, Timberland and even Chanel, and he became a co-owner of G Star in 2016. He’s also produced some of the best songs ever made.
Pharrell has been a long-standing partner with Adidas, with the first project released in 2014; consisting of reworked Stan Smiths. He’s even received accolades from the late Karl Lagerfeld over the years, and he won the CFDA Fashion Icon Award in 2015, for making an impact across multiple sectors of pop culture.
