Your phone is always within reach — in your pocket at the coffee shop, beside your laptop while you work, in your hand as you walk through the city. So why not give it the same thought you give the rest of your look? That’s the question at the heart of Vanilla Lane, the New Zealand brand turning tech accessories into something you actually want to show off.
Founded by Amelia McKenzie when she was just 14, Vanilla Lane isn’t about blending in. These are phone cases with a point of view — bold, graphic, unmistakably fashion-forward. What began as one teenager’s creative spark has quietly grown into a brand with serious reach, beloved by a global community stretching from New York to Brunei. Sure, these cases protect your phone. But what they really offer is self-expression: a mood, a moment, a little piece of personality you carry everywhere.
Durable, MagSafe-ready, and always striking, Vanilla Lane has carved out its own space where tech meets taste. We caught up with Amelia to talk inspiration, building a brand across borders, and why the smallest details — like what’s in your hand right now — deserve to be beautiful.
Meet Vanilla Lane: The Gen-Z Brand Redefining Tech Style
Vanilla Lane has such a distinct aesthetic: bold, playful, and unapologetically stylish. How would you describe the brand’s personality in your own words?
Vanilla Lane is direct, confident, and visually strong. Our style is clean but bold, and we don’t shy away from colour or attitude. We design for people who like their accessories to say something about them without needing explanation. There’s no overthinking. It’s straight to the point, stylish, and built to last.

Your case names — “Brooklyn Babe,” “Concrete Jungle,” “Smooches” — feel almost like characters. What inspires your design language and naming style?
My design language comes from what I know catches the attention of people my age. I’m Gen Z, and I create from that perspective — things that are instantly recognisable, visually appealing, and connected to real places, moods, or identities. The names are chosen to feel like the “personality” behind the design. If someone looks at a case and can imagine the vibe or the type of person who’d wear it, then the name is doing its job. It is also based around the collection it is in.
How do you want someone to feel when they snap a Vanilla Lane case onto their phone for the first time?
I want it to feel like their phone finally matches the rest of their style. Most people carry their phone everywhere, so when the case fits their personality, it feels right. It should feel like a small upgrade to their everyday routine — functional, protective, but also something they genuinely like seeing in their hand.
Crafting Cases with Confidence, Quality, and Attitude
From glossy finishes to MagSafe compatibility, your cases mix personality with practicality. What goes into the craftsmanship behind each design?
A lot more than people usually expect. Every case goes through multiple rounds of sampling to get the colours, finishes, and protective details right. We test the printing quality, the gloss, the durability, the MagSafe alignment — everything has to work both visually and practically. Even small things like corner protection or thickness are checked repeatedly. Nothing gets released on a whim. It took us a few years to get it right, but we finally did.

When you’re designing a new collection, how do you decide what feels timeless versus what captures a moment or trend?
I usually look at two things:
1. Would someone still want this a year from now?
2. Does this design represent a moment people will remember?
If a design feels classic or tied to a place or mood that doesn’t fade, it goes into the “timeless” category. Designs that reflect what people are loving right now get released as trend-led collections, but they’re still made with the same quality as everything else, so even trends feel elevated.
What are the details invisible to the consumer — materials, testing, design iteration — that you wish more people knew about?
I wish more people knew how many hands and how much heart go into every single design, especially from the small New Zealand artists who create a lot of the artwork behind our cases. Collaborating with them means their work gets seen on an international scale, which is something I’m genuinely proud to help make possible. Most people never realise that a case they buy might actually be showcasing the talent of a local artist who now has customers all over the world.
The other thing people don’t usually see is how this all started. Vanilla Lane was built from nothing by just one person, Amelia McKenzie, when I was 14. No funding, no team, no connections — just ideas and a drive to make something real. Even now, as the brand has grown into a global business, I still manage everything myself: production, customer service, marketing, the entire process from start to finish.
There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work, late nights, and problem-solving that people don’t see, but it’s a huge part of why the brand is what it is today.

I already saw phone cases as part of how people express themselves. It’s one of the items most of us carry every single day, so it naturally becomes an accessory, not just protection.

Style as Self-Expression: The Culture Behind the Cases
When did you first notice people treating phone cases as fashion pieces rather than just protection?
Honestly, I noticed it before I even launched Vanilla Lane. That’s the whole reason I started the brand — I already saw phone cases as part of how people express themselves. It’s one of the items most of us carry every single day, so it naturally becomes an accessory, not just protection. Starting Vanilla Lane was my way of filling that gap with designs that looked intentional.
If you had to choose one Vanilla Lane design as the ultimate brand signature, which would it be and why?
The Rockstar case. It’s the original best-seller and has been with us since we opened in 2023. Even as new styles come out, Rockstar consistently holds its place. It represents where we started and how far we’ve grown.
If Vanilla Lane were a fashion collection walking down a runway, what would the vibe be?
Sharp, graphic, and confident. Think bold prints, strong lines, and a mix of attitude and polish — the kind of show where everything feels cohesive but each piece still has its own personality.
A Global Following: Where Vanilla Lane’s Style Travels
As a brand that ships worldwide, which regions receive the most orders, and where’s the furthest or most unexpected place you’ve seen someone using a Vanilla Lane case?
The United States is by far our largest international market. We’ve shipped to so many countries that we never expected when we started. The furthest from New Zealand has been the United Kingdom, but we’ve also sent orders to Honduras, Brunei, Ecuador, and the Bahamas. Seeing our cases show up in those places is still surreal.

Have there been any regions or cities where the brand unexpectedly took off? And how did that shape your design process?
We originally expected most orders to come from within New Zealand. When we suddenly started receiving international orders, it changed how we approached our collections. That’s what led to more location-inspired drops — for example, the Darling collection for the UK and The Fifth Lane collection for New York. The global interest pushed us to design with specific cultures and cities in mind.
Where Style Meets Function: Tech Accessories for the Modern Traveller
At House of Coco, we love the idea of “travel wardrobes.” Where do Vanilla Lane cases fit into that lifestyle equation?
Everyone carries their phone everywhere while travelling — it’s your camera, your map, your lifeline. And unfortunately, phones get dropped a lot on trips. Our cases fit into that space by giving you something protective enough to trust but still stylish enough that you don’t mind it being visible in every photo. It’s part of your travel essentials, the same way you pack outfits or accessories.
Are there plans to expand beyond phone cases — into tech accessories, travel goods, or even a dream collaboration you’d love to see come to life?
Yes. We’re big on giving back to the community, so as we grow, we want to expand in ways that allow us to run more fundraisers and support people who need it. We have ideas for future products and collaborations, but the priority is making sure anything new still aligns with our values and allows us to contribute in a meaningful way.
From championing New Zealand artists to landing in hands across six continents, Vanilla Lane is proof that good design has no borders. What started in Amelia’s teenage bedroom has become something bigger — a brand that’s changed the way we think about the objects we touch most. Not just functional. Not just pretty. Actually cool.
Whether you’re meeting friends for coffee in Auckland or rushing through JFK with your carry-on, there’s something quietly satisfying about pulling out your phone and thinking: yeah, this looks right.
