Visit Africa in 2024: Why Malawi is the magical destination to be top of your travel list this year

Malawi is fondly dubbed “The Warm Heart of Africa” – and after exploring the southern region of the country, we can confirm that this is a place that truly lives up to its endearing nickname. The landlocked gem, tucked away in southeastern Africa, offers a spectacular blend of natural beauty, vibrant culture and heartwarming hospitality.

My recent adventure through southern Malawi revealed a treasure trove of experiences that left me utterly enchanted. I am always someone who wishes to explore new parts of the world – and having, shamefully, visited very little of Africa, I should be planning a trip to Botswana or Zambia next – but I’d go back to Malawi in a heartbeat – having been completely captivated by its charm.

Southern Malawi is a region where the energy of urban life harmoniously blends with the beauty of its nature. It’s a place where bustling city streets lead you to tranquil wildlife reserves – and where sparkling lakeside retreats offer a peaceful escape from the everyday hustle.

Blantyre

Blantyre is the gateway to southern Malawi and a city that blends historical charm with modern amenities. Named after the Scottish town where explorer David Livingstone was born, Blantyre is a bustling commercial hub with colonial-era architecture, lively markets, and a growing arts scene.

For a taste of local life, explore the colorful markets where you can find everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts.

Majete Wildlife Reserve

Leaving the urban comforts of Blantyre, I headed south to the Majete Wildlife Reserve, a stunning testament to Malawi’s commitment to conservation. Majete is one of the few parks in Malawi where you can spot the Big Five, thanks to successful rewilding efforts.

  • Mkulumadzi Lodge: Nestled at the confluence of the Shire River and Mkulumadzi River, this lodge offers luxurious chalets with breathtaking views. Activities here include guided game drives, bush walks, and boat safaris. The lodge’s commitment to sustainability and its partnership with local communities adds to the enriching experience.

  • Thawale Tented Lodge: For a more rustic, close-to-nature experience, Thawale offers tented accommodations that blend comfort with an authentic bush experience. Overlooking a waterhole frequented by wildlife, it’s perfect for those who want to be immersed in the sights and sounds of the African wilderness.

Cape Maclear: A slice of paradise on Lake Malawi

From Majete, I traveled to the pristine shores of Cape Maclear on the southern tip of Lake Malawi. It’s a long drive, mind, so buckle up and remember – the destination is worth the lengthy journey. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant cichlid fish population, and laid-back beach vibe.

  • Pumulani Lodge: Perched on a hillside overlooking the lake, Pumulani offers luxury villas with panoramic views. The lodge provides a range of water-based activities, including snorkeling, kayaking, and sunset cruises on traditional wooden boats. It’s the perfect base for both relaxation and adventure.

  • Mumbo Island: A short boat ride from Cape Maclear brought me to Mumbo Island, a tiny, uninhabited island in Lake Malawi. This eco-friendly retreat offers the ultimate in seclusion and tranquility. The island has rustic yet comfortable tented camps that blend seamlessly with the natural environment. With no electricity or Wi-Fi, it’s an ideal spot for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature. Activities include snorkeling, diving, and exploring the island’s nature trails.

Blue Zebra Island

My final stop was Blue Zebra Island, part of the Marelli Islands on Lake Malawi. This lesser-known destination is a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers. My personal favourite of all the lodgings in southern Malawi, Blue Zebra Island just had that ‘warm heart’ I’d been hearing so much about during my trip. A special thanks to Adamson, one of the guides at Blue Zebra Island, who really made the experience what it was.

The island offers a range of luxury tented chalets and stone cottages, each with stunning lake views. The island’s name comes from the rare blue zebra cichlid fish, which can be spotted while snorkeling. The tranquil atmosphere, combined with the diverse birdlife and aquatic activities, makes it a perfect retreat for nature enthusiasts.

Travel Tips for Southern Malawi

  • Best Time to Visit: The dry season (May to October) is ideal for wildlife viewing and water activities. Temperatures are pleasant, and the risk of malaria is lower.
  • Getting Around: While Blantyre is easily accessible by road, reaching the more remote locations like Majete and Lake Malawi may require a 4×4 vehicle. Private transfers can be arranged by lodges.
  • Health and Safety: Consult with a travel doctor about vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis before traveling. Always drink bottled water and be cautious with street food.
  • Local Customs: Malawi is a predominantly conservative and religious country so be aware that modest dress is appreciated.
