With the 4th of July in full swing, you can’t help but see American flags, hot dogs and red white and blue all over your insta feed. To get in the spirit and for all things feel good with juke boxes, diners and of course strong female characters – look no further than Waitress! The show is sassy, wholesome, at times raunchy, nostalgic and the jokes are cleverly inserted at the perfect moments so that there is truly something cackle out loud hilarious for every member of the audience. Waitress changes from intensely funny to poignant and thoughtful without the flow ever feeling contrived. It was truly a masterpiece and when we laughed, we LAUGHED!
The show stars Lucie Jones, Ashley Roberts, Marisha Wallace and Blake Harrison with exceptional performances from all. A highlight was Jones’ rendition of “She Used to Be Mine”, a song written by American singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, for the play. The end of the song was met with a standing ovation, something that I had never seen in a London theatre before, mid-performance. Ashley and Marisha are the perfect best friend duo and you can’t help but fall for their amazing talent and their loyalty to Jenna through the good and the bad. Girl power.
After the audience is offered the classic recipe for success, the twists and turns that follow leave everyone wondering how the show will end. Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her life from the ground up and the ending, which no one expected, couldn’t be sweeter.
