Our Editor-in-Chief, Laura Bartlett, heads back to her happy place—Switzerland—and this time, she’s calling the Grand Hotel Kronenhof home.
If you’ve never been to Switzerland, you’re missing out on a slice of heaven on earth. For me, Switzerland isn’t just a destination—it’s a state of mind. This alpine wonderland has been my happy place for years, a sanctuary I’ve visited more than 15 times to date. While some people go to therapy, I book a flight to Switzerland. And on my latest trip, I found myself at the Grand Hotel Kronenhof, the iconic sister property of the Kulm Hotel in St. Moritz, which I’ve also had the pleasure of experiencing.
Tucked away in the picturesque village of Pontresina, the Kronenhof offers everything I love about this magical country: jaw-dropping mountain views, a deep sense of tranquility and just the right balance of tradition and modern luxury. It’s the kind of place where time slows down and you can truly immerse yourself in the moment—a rarity in today’s fast-paced world.
A Grand Welcome
The moment I arrived, the Kronenhof’s palatial façade and elegant entrance set the tone for what was to come. Built in 1848, the hotel is steeped in history, yet every detail feels fresh, thoughtful and perfectly suited for a modern traveler.
The Grand Hotel Kronenhof, affectionately known as the “Grande Dame of the Engadine,” has been a beacon of Swiss hospitality since 1848. Originally established as the Gasthaus Rössli by Andreas Gredig, it began as a modest guesthouse with a Veltliner wine shop and stables for horses transporting wine over the Bernina Pass.
As the allure of Swiss mountain retreats grew in the late 19th century, the hotel underwent significant expansions. Between 1896 and 1898, architects Jakob and Georg Ragaz transformed it into the magnificent neo-baroque, horseshoe-shaped structure that stands today, complete with a grand forecourt and crowned dome. This architectural masterpiece quickly became a favourite among the elite during the Belle Époque era. In 2004, the Kronenhof joined the esteemed Kulm Hotel St. Moritz under the ownership of AG Grand Hotels Engadinerkulm, leading to extensive restorations that have preserved its historic charm while elevating its status as one of Switzerland’s premier luxury and wellness destinations.
I was lucky enough to be upgraded to a Junior Suite and it was the kind of indulgence that turns a trip into a memory. With its spacious living area, timeless décor and a private balcony that practically demanded morning coffee with a side of sweeping alpine views, it was nothing short of perfection. Rates for Junior Suites start at CHF 720 and go up to CHF 1,450 in peak season, but the comfort, luxury and those postcard-worthy views are worth every single Swiss franc.
For those in a Superior Double Room, you’ll still enjoy a dreamy retreat with cozy touches and stunning vistas, with rates ranging from CHF 435 to CHF 955 depending on the season and festivities. But trust me, if you’re going to treat yourself, the Junior Suite is the way to go. It’s a splurge you won’t regret.
Spa Time: A Serendipitous Mix-Up
No trip to Switzerland is complete without a bit of pampering and the Kronenhof Spa is nothing short of divine. I originally booked the 5 Senses Massage (50 minutes for CHF 180), but thanks to a mix-up, I arrived a little early—oops! With no massage room available, the team seamlessly pivoted and treated me to the *Facial Pharmos Natur* (CHF 190) and let me tell you, it was fate. The treatment left my skin glowing and my mind completely at ease, proving that sometimes, life’s little detours can be a blessing in disguise.
The spa at the Grand Hotel Kronenhof is an alpine sanctuary and one of the most impressive wellness destinations in the region—a true gem that’s as unforgettable as the mountains surrounding it. Whether you’re in need of a rejuvenating escape or simply some well-deserved pampering, this spa delivers in every possible way.
Among the highlights of their extensive menu is the AktiVital Massage (50 minutes for CHF 180), a deeply restorative treatment that soothes tired muscles and clears your mind. But it’s not just the treatments that make this spa extraordinary—it’s the setting. Picture yourself floating in the serene indoor pool or unwinding in the outdoor whirlpool, with the snow-dusted peaks as your backdrop. It’s the kind of tranquility that feels almost cinematic.
From the saunas to the relaxation zones, every corner of the spa has been designed with one purpose: to leave you feeling refreshed, rebalanced, and utterly spoiled. This isn’t just a hotel spa—it’s an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left
From the Food to the Activities
Dining at the Grand Hotel Kronenhof is an experience as grand as its name, and the heart of it all is the stunning Grand Restaurant. Housed in the hotel’s historic neo-baroque ballroom, this is where fine dining meets pure elegance. The soaring ceilings, intricate chandeliers, and walls steeped in history create a setting that’s nothing short of magical. It’s also where you’ll start each day with an unforgettable breakfast, setting the tone for everything the Kronenhof has to offer.
For me, this exquisite space became even more meaningful as I celebrated two years sober here—an achievement I toasted not with champagne, but with the unmatched flavors of the restaurant’s fine cuisine. From beautifully plated courses to the impeccable service, this milestone dinner was the perfect way to honor a personal triumph in a setting that felt as monumental as the occasion itself. The Grand Restaurant isn’t just a place to dine—it’s a place where memories are made.
Visiting Switzerland in the autumn is like stepping into a fairytale and the Kronenhof makes it easy to embrace the magic. From crisp hikes through golden forests to horse-drawn carriage rides that feel straight out of a storybook, the activities offered are as varied as they are enchanting. Their autumn activities brochure is packed with ideas, but I couldn’t help peeking at their winter offerings, too—skiing, snowshoeing and après-ski by a roaring fire? Hook a sister up!
Final Thoughts: A Swiss Love Affair
The Grand Hotel Kronenhof is more than just a place to stay; it’s a gateway to everything I adore about Switzerland. From the warm hospitality to the stunning landscapes and a spa experience that soothed my body and soul, this hotel captured my heart.
So, if you’re planning your next escape, let me save you some time—book the Grand Hotel Kronenhof. And if you’ve never been to Switzerland? Well, let me put it this way: the mountains are calling and this is the perfect place to answer. Trust me, your soul will thank you.
