“Mama London aims to be a confluence for visitors and locals alike, providing a witty and welcoming ‘home’ in East London. As much for its neighbours as for visitors from afar, Mama looks forward to welcoming its new family this Autumn.” – Mama Shelter

To celebrate the opening of Mama Shelter London, we were invited to attend the hotels VIP introductory weekend, where we got to see for ourselves what secrets Mama was keeping inside her four walls of community, individuality, playfulness and cutting-edge design. We kicked things off with an evening of cocktails and sharing platters, inspired by East London’s love for comfort food and unexpected liquor combinations, (our personal favourite being the “Hackney Riviera”, fashioned from ELLC rum, pineapple shrub and a dash of ginger ale). To soothe our sore-heads the morning after, we were treated to an open-top bus tour of London’s most-notable landscapes, followed by a three-course dinner located in the hotels courtyard area. Local DJ’s, magicians and live singers took to the floor to surprise the VIP weekenders with some high-class entertainment – alongside the opportunity to show off our dancing skills – followed by an incredible brunch assortment the Sunday morning, to end our visit on a satiated high.

Launched in 2008 by Serge Trigano and his sons, Benjamin and Jérémie, Mama Shelter strives to deliver their guests with a mix of affordability, leisure and exceptional service. Complete with Japanese-style karaoke rooms (kitted out with 50’s inspired microphones and cosy seating areas) and old-school arcade machines, the boutique delivers the perfect business-leisure balance, making it one of the cities top hotspots for after-work drinks with a nostalgic twist.

The 194 rooms that Mama Shelter house are complete with high-quality linen bedsheets and free WIFI and movies, alongside a selection of MAMA SKIN’s skincare range derived from organic amenities. The minimal layout of the room promotes accessibility with style, with comfort and quality lying at the heart of these hassle-free hideaways. And with entry-level rooms starting at an impressive £99 per night, Mama Shelter proves that there’s no need to empty your pockets for an evening of luxury and satisfaction.

Mama Shelter prides itself on the decision to only introduce the brand into districts that they feel imitates Mama’s philosophy, while continuing to offer a distinctive experience to their customer. Each hotel incorporates the cities rich heritage and story into their own DNA, through unique interior design and extensive menu choices inspired by local cuisines and traditions. Liberty prints, modernised doily details and witty Albion-inspired designs inject customary British qualities into Mama Shelter London’s atmosphere, whilst ensuring that the brands core elements of dark ceilings, central-island bars and open-space reception areas – that internationally unite the hotel’s designs – are noticeably present throughout. Although Mama Shelter’s aesthetic blueprint is no stranger to a few tweaks and modifications dependent on its destination, their ethos remains the same worldwide –

“to meet and to share a moment.”

Provocatively vivacious in their proposal, Mama Shelter blurs the boundaries of tongue-in-cheek components with youthful experiences, to deliver something truly exclusive in both character and design.

Rates at Mama Shelter London start from £99 per night for an entry level room.
