When you think of an upscale wellness weekend, Grimsby probably isn’t the first destination that springs to mind. The coastal Lincolnshire town is better known for its maritime heritage than mindful rituals and hydrotherapy pools. And yet, tucked away in the rolling countryside just beyond its edges lies a retreat that quietly redefines the UK’s wellness credentials.

It was a well overdue Mother-Daughter weekend away, and my discerning Mum was lured to Lincolnshire by the promised of Sancerre, saunas and scenic views. We hopped on a train at King’s Cross on a Friday night and headed north to Lincoln. It felt far enough to feel like a proper escape, close enough to keep it blissfully easy. After a little gander around the historic centre, we jumped in a 45-minute taxi to our home for the next two nights.
We arrived at the Luxury Boutique Retreat Spa – a luxury lodge with two ensuite bedrooms which sleeps up to four people and includes stylish open plan living, spa garden and an immaculately done outdoor decking area with hot tub and sauna. Met with mood lighting, a fire and a bottle of fizz, I felt rested already.
Spa
The spa at Landal Laceby Manor Resort & Spa is a sanctuary designed for deep rest where guests can truly slow down. The indoor–outdoor pool is the perfect spot to relax and order a delicious glass of wine and have a gossip. An aromatherapy steam room fills the air with soothing scents, while both a traditional Finnish sauna and a fragrant herbal sauna offer warming spaces to unwind. The range of facilities is world-class, and the team at the spa go above and beyond to make each experience special.
One of the most memorable experiences is the natural swimming pond. Here, guests can embrace the invigorating benefits of cold-water immersion before retreating back into the warmth of the thermal areas. For those wanting to go deeper, the spa also hosts guided sessions inspired by the Wim Hof Method, led by certified instructors. Upstairs, the relaxation spaces are just as thoughtfully designed. Ergonomically shaped loungers overlook sweeping views of the golf course and surrounding countryside, creating the perfect spot to reset.
Wellness weekend dining
Tucked within the spa gardens, The Oak Room Restaurant overlooks the rolling greens of the golf course. With winding pathways and soft up-lighting that glows as evening falls, the setting feels quietly transportive. The mood is laid-back yet refined, with attentive service and a cracking cocktail menu that is well worth exploring.
We began with a wonderfully fresh crab and crayfish tian – zingy, delicate and delicious. After all, we are not far from Grimsby. The 30-day aged rib-eye and grilled smoked swordfish was not to be missed. Open seven days a week, the restaurant also serves indulgent Sunday roasts and elegant afternoon teas, perfect for marking a special occasion.
For something more relaxed, guests can head to The Bar & Pizzeria next door, where expertly crafted wood-fired pizzas are served in a casual setting. On Saturday night we took full advantage. We ordered a couple to go and wandered back to our luxury lodge, pizza boxes in hand, ready for a cosy night in and not wanting to leave our beautiful accommodation.
The great outdoors
A wellness weekend at Landal Laceby Manor Resort & Spa doesn’t end at the spa door. Set on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, it is perfectly placed for restorative time in nature. Whether it’s an early morning hike or a gentle countryside stroll, perhaps with the promise of a cosy pub at the end, the surrounding landscape invites guests to slow down and reconnect with nature.
After a late and leisurely breakfast on the spacious decking of our luxury lodge, basking in the morning sun after a quick sauna session, we pulled on our Wellies and set off across the fields towards The Ship Inn. This charming, dog-friendly pub sits in the whimsically named village of Barnoldby le Beck around a 50-minute walk away.
The quaint village is steeped in history. It was recorded in the Domesday Book and today has a population of just 346 residents. At its heart stands the beautiful Church of St Helen, which just so happens to share a name with my mum. Naturally, I braced myself for a steady stream of saint-related jokes for the rest of the visit.
Parts of the church date back to the 13th century, with additions made over the following two hundred years, and wandering inside feels like stepping quietly through layers of history. When we entered, we couldn’t help but feel a quiet sense of awe. Walking through the ancient church with my Mum, we paused for a moment of stillness and it felt really grounding to be away from a big city, even for a few days. A small but meaningful reminder of the slower rhythm of our very much needed wellness weekend.
