What Are the Origins of Your Favourite Memes?

Internet memes are an interesting new phenomenon. Memetics itself isn’t new, however the recent rise in internet memes that usually take the form of a picture with a joke on it and rely on the viewers understanding of the sub context of the memes to be funny. You all know what I mean, but have you ever wondered where all of these memes originally came from? #TeamCoco delved a little deeper and heres what we found…

Success Kid (above)

Originally a picture of a child eating sand:

This picture now denotes a child who is winning at life. It will normally have words along the lines of “Thought it was Thursday … It’s Friday” etc. The boy’s mother is a photographer called Laney Griner and she took a picture of her kid on the beach and thought that the resulting photo was too brilliant not to share with the world. After it was shared, it obviously came into the hands of internet ‘memesters’ (no idea if that’s what they’re called).

Y U NO…?
I’ve always had a problem with this meme, I mean, just look at it, it’s hideous:

It original comes from a Japanese manga series by the name of Gantz and is probably as hideous as this meme. I struggle to look at it. It’s used to show exasperation and is usually accompanied by a long web rant about sausages or clouds (or whatever keyboard warriors rant about). We have Tumblr to blame for this meme  – well done Tumblr

Scumbag Steve
I’ve always felt sorry for Steve, he might be a pleasant fellow called Timothy who works at the local supermarket, but instead he’s branded as a ‘chav’ and a nasty blight on society … although he does look the part, to be fair:

This meme is used as a joke for the type of scumbag behaviour that everyday scumbags do on an everyday scumbag basis. Things like the above, as well as “Uses the last of the milk … puts carton back in the fridge” – how rude is that!?

Philosoraptor
This is one of my favourite memes, usually because I go, ‘Oh yeah, how clever,’ every time I see one. See what I mean:

Apparently it was started by some guy called Sam Smith (not that one). He created a t-shirt with the philosophical raptor on because his mate Devin (a name I’ve never understood) used to hunch over and think about … stuff, so naturally his friends likened him to a thinking dinosaur…

Socially Awkward Penguin
This little guy sums up my whole existence on an almost daily basis. It’s both funny and sad, really, but oh well, his memes are cute so who cares about my sad, awkward existence.

Yeah … this happened once. The original photo originally landed in National Geographic before being shared around and then landed in the lap of a Reddit user (I swear if it isn’t Tumblr it’s Reddit).

There you go, those are probably 5 of the most famous memes and now you know where they came from which means you can wow friends with your meme knowledge … I wish I had friends.
