There’s a phrase many of us heard as kids but maybe didn’t know its meaning at the time: “The world is your oyster.” What it translates into, most simply, is that there’s an abundance of opportunities out there. So how does this apply to real life, and more particularly, to nurses?

For one thing, when you become a registered nurse, a vast range of career options opens up.. You can specialize in various fields, such as neonatal or gerontological care. You can also choose to work at a school, a doctor’s office, or in a hospital.

Alternatively, if you yearn for adventure, eager to explore the world, then you can become a travel nurse.

The Job of the Traveling Nurse

In the broadest terms, a traveling nurse usually works for a specialized agency that finds temporary assignments in numerous locations. Such enterprises also negotiate pay, benefits, and housing for employees.

There’s a demand for nurses no matter where you go, so immediate positions become available quite frequently. The duration of employment ranges from 13 to 26 weeks on average.

Traveling nurses are usually compensated better than their stationary counterparts.  If they’re willing to work overtime or specialize in a particular niche, they can earn even more.

Travel Nursing agencies try to place employees in particular locations, and for the duration they desire. Overall, these positions often offer lucrative pay, flexibility, and the opportunity to travel across the country.

Unique Opportunities Await

While most people save up their vacation time and money to explore new destinations, traveling nurses have a particular advantage. They’re literally paid to journey across the country, meet new people, and discover more places.   Wanderlust, is in fact, a central component of this lifestyle.

With cities in need of nurses all across the U.S., you can choose any climate, population, or region you desire. You can also decide how long you want to stay, be it a season, six months, or in some situations, even a year or two.

The possibilities are endless – whether you want to explore the tropical climate of Hawaii or the cold temperatures in Alaska. You can choose to experience the big city life or the small rural American town.

Are you interested in going abroad? Believe it or not, there are also opportunities available for international travel nurses. The United Kingdom, Australia, or even European countries can be fantastic destinations. If you prefer more exotic locations, parts of Asia, Africa and certain U.S. territories are also other possibilities to explore.

Gain New Life Skills

Of course, the opportunity isn’t restricted to location alone. There’s also the abundance of experience and knowledge that comes from shorter-term traveling jobs.

As a traveling nurse, you can expand your perspective and learn about different people and communities at each new place. You’ll gain an enhanced understanding of how to do different things. These experiences also boost confidence, so you’ll be able to jump in and handle each task with fluidity.

You’re also granted the flexibility to learn from and teach other people. With each new position you take, you’ll get more hands-on experience working in diverse settings.

There are also holistic experiences not related to your work. You’ll begin communicating with all types of people and become acquainted with different cultures. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop empathy, enhance your bedside manner and become more adaptable. All of this benefits not just your resume and your career but your relationships with others, as well as yourself.

Ready for an Adventure?

Becoming a nurse, and experiencing all the benefits of traveling, is a unique opportunity that most people don’t get to have. Not only will you build your career, but you’ll also gain life experience. You aren’t limited by location either, so you’ll get to explore fascinating new destinations and discover a few things along the way. The world can truly be your oyster.
