Goa is shifting its image from a party destination to a digital nomad haven, offering high-speed internet, beachside co-working spaces, and aiming for 100% internet connectivity even in rural areas.

Goa has witnessed a surge in tourist numbers, welcoming over 10 million visitors in its recent tourist season, reflecting its growing appeal and resilience in tourism.

With a marketing campaign pushing “Workation Goa,” the goal is to attract remote workers and become a pioneer in India for digital nomads, a high-spending segment that boosts local economies. It faces competition from other Asian destinations like South Korea, Japan, and Thailand, which offer digital nomad visas.

The state plans to establish “sea hubs” or co-working spaces along beaches, offering workstations, high-speed internet, leisure activities like surfing, and Goan cuisine. It aims to achieve 100% internet connectivity, including in remote villages, within two years.

Digital nomads represent a high-spending segment that boosts local economies. Factors for digital nomads choosing a destination include reliable internet and favorable weather.

According to a KPMG report cited by Skift.com, 35% of Goa’s population is involved in tourism jobs, highlighting the importance of the tourism sector for the state’s economy.

In May, a network connecting Goa-based entrepreneurs was launched. Called The Goa Network (TGN), the platform connects Goa-based startups, businesses, and digital nomads, promoting innovation, growth, and societal development. It aims to foster an entrepreneurial ecosystem by connecting startups with individuals, resources, expertise, and opportunities through various networking events.

The state is advocating for a digital nomad visa from the Indian government to enhance long-term stays and boost the local economy through high-spending digital nomads.
