Our Lifestyle Editor, Jo Jessop recently made a trip to Harrogate to celebrate everything Yorkshire and try out TheYMCo’s famous balls and tasty beer.
The UK’s first meatball restaurant & bar invited House of Coco to a tasting evening where they paired its individual meatballs with specially brewed beers all made in Yorkshire.
Yorkshire brewer Denzil, co-founder of Great Heck Brewery and Gareth Atkinson, co-founder of Yorkshire Meatball Co. walked and talked each guest through this fantastic pairing process, explaining why they had selected the beers to accompany each ball.
Gareth Atkinson, co-founder of Yorkshire Meatball Co., said: “At The Yorkshire Meatball Co. we have two great passions – our balls and our Yorkshire beers. So we thought why not combine both our loves and create an event that celebrates both. We love a glass of anything from Great Heck Brewery so it’s great that the team can join us. The micro-brewery brought along six beers for our guests to try that perfectly accompany our tasty meatball dishes.
During the evening, guests were able to tuck into six delicious meatball dishes that had been paired incredibly with local beers.
“Our roots are in Yorkshire, our products are locally sourced and we like to celebrate what the region has to offer.”
Jo from House of Coco says;
“We had a great time at this tasting event – the restaurant is welcoming, friendly and a fresh new concept!
“The decor is rather impressive, in particular the chandeliers made from cheese graters and colanders.
“We got to try meat, fish and veggie balls all of which use only the freshest and tastiest locally-sourced produce. These were all paired with some incredible beers and real ales.
“The first meatball we sampled was an unexpected Fish ball (haddock, smoked chorizo and parsley) this delicious ball was paired with one of my favourites, the Citra beer – a blonde and light, rather refreshing beer that goes down very easily.
“My favourite meatball of the night was the Yorkshire Ball, this is the original YMCo ball, and is a mixture of beef and pork belly – it was very tasty and served with an incredible thick gravy which helped each bite melt in your mouth!
“Personally, my least favourite balls were the Birdie ball, a seasoned chicken meatball, however, I could see how this would have been a perfect choice for children as it was a “posh chicken nugget”. Also, the Fake ball – but that’s because I’m not a big fan of the chick pea!
“I thought the best combination was the a Smokey ball which was a great mix of lamb mince and smoked paprika this was teamed with the Madagascar beer, a stout with strong vanilla flavours – the beer and ball complemented each other brilliantly.
“To finish the night we were invited to try the Hot Ball and indeed it didn’t disappoint… this was a succulent pork mix with a nice kick of chilli, this was paired up with Yakima IPA, a refreshing blonde beer to settle the taste buds.
“This specialty Meatball and Craft Beer Bar is certainly leading the fight against average. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening, it was different, relaxing, entertaining and delicious! I totally recommend a trip to The Yorkshire Meatball Company, either their restaurant in Harrogate or the new place in York.”
There are plans to host another Beer and Balls evening – keep an eye on the website.
