As the most feted of whisky styles, the Ex-Sherry Cask expression is well accustomed to indulgent celebrations of all kinds, from big birthdays to New Year’s and Burns Suppers, but this latest Single Malt from Dartmoor Whisky can bring something truly remarkable to the party. Firmly rooted in the windswept moors that give it its name, all of its ingredients are sourced from the moorlands, which are then brought together in Dartmoor Whisky Distillery’s refurbished Alembic Cognac still that sits proudly at the end of Bovey Tracey’s former Town Hall.
Whereas most sherry expressions are only finished in sherry casks, sitting for most of their maturation in lesser casks, Dartmoor Whisky Distillery ages its Ex-Sherry Cask Single Malt in highly prized Oloroso Sherry casks from start to finish, allowing the spirit the time it needs to take on its golden colour, inviting sherry aromas and diverse flavour notes. With sweet sherry, hazelnut, coconut, marzipan and sultanas all playing out on the palate, followed by hints of gingerbread and treacle, this most distinctive of whiskies will make for a special toast that lives long in the memory.
