If the crack of a new can of tennis balls with their bright neon yellow and sharp rubbery smell excites your senses, then you must make the pilgrimage to the desert tennis paradise of Indian Wells and the gorgeous sanctuary of the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa. For women who plan their spring calendar around the tournament, this isn’t just a resort stay — it’s part of the ritual.
Located in the Coachella Valley at the foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains, Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa is just two hours from Los Angeles or 16 miles from Palm Springs International Airport. It’s adjacent to Indian Wells Golf Resort and less than two miles from the famed Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Set your alarm early to beat the heat, rallying with your partner on Renaissance Esmeralda’s on-site tennis or pickleball courts as morning light spills across the mountains. For those who prefer fairways to baselines, championship golf awaits steps away at Indian Wells Golf Resort.
And if your travels tend to revolve around legendary sporting venues, you might also consider pairing your tennis pilgrimage with a coastal golf escape at Torrey Pines.
There’s an electric buzz knowing you’re just minutes from the Tennis Garden where Jannik Sinner and Coco Gauff battle their way to the Finals. Word has it some of the players stay at the resort — we didn’t spot any on our pre-tournament visit, but the possibility alone adds to the thrill.

Rooms & Suites at Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa
The resort can accommodate large conventions with over 560 rooms, including more than 100 suites, but the open courtyard design gives the space an uncrowded feel with plenty of room to unwind and multiple areas to sit and visit with friends. After hours under the desert sun — whether spectating center court or playing your own match — returning to the cool privacy of your mountain-view suite feels like a much-needed retreat. Our suite was spacious with two queen beds, an impressively large walk-in closet, and a sectional sofa to kick back on.
The bathroom was large and bright with both a rainfall showerhead and handheld wand — perfect for rinsing off sunscreen and desert dust. After freshening up, throw on the robe and slippers provided. The queen beds somehow suited both me — a firm mattress devotee — and my sister, who prefers pillowy soft, for two nights of excellent sleep.

Dining Under the Desert Sky
While the Tennis Garden offers plenty of quick bites between matches, the resort’s terrace-level eateries offer a more relaxed — and air-conditioned! — escape. Descending the dramatic staircase, The Place bar comes into view — a lively, colorful space with a full bar and large screen TVs where I caught a few points of a WTA Final. If you can’t be bothered to leave the pool, you can do as I did and place an order with the H2O Pool Bar waiter for an extra cheesy pepperoni pizza from the water.
Nearby, CAVA serves breakfast through dinner with seating indoors or al fresco. We opted for the whole shebang breakfast buffet, which included the Continental pastries, a create-your-own juice bar, made-to-order omelets, and other hot dishes. I was stoked to find biscuits and gravy among them — a Southern staple rarely spotted out West.
One evening we ordered room service — the R Burger is not to be missed: creamy aioli, unexpected gouda, peppered bacon, caramelized onions, all on the softest brioche bun. To get in your veggies, opt in for the green side salad instead of fries, or if you really love spicy foods, try the harissa cauliflower with quinoa pilaf which brings the heat.
For a post-match rehash over cocktails and something more substantial, my sister and I agreed that Seven Olive Modern Gastropub is worth a reservation. The desert-inspired cocktail menu made choosing just one nearly impossible. We landed on the Huckleberry Fizz (careful — these go down smoothly) and the Blood Orange Espresso Martini, crafted with local Joshua Tree Distillery vodka and house-made blood orange syrup — a surprising lift to a regular espresso martini.

On our visit — only its second night open — Seven Olive was a quiet, relaxed venue with a thoughtful menu spanning brick oven pizzas, elevated surf-and-turf dishes, and inventive vegetarian options.
We began with the Goat Cheese Tart, an easy-to-share starter with a lot of bold flavors: tangy goat cheese, salty bacon and peppery arugula, all softened by some caramelized onions, bits of date, topped with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.
For our mains, we split the Birria Grilled Cheese Sandwich — a recipe that’s been in one staff member’s family for 30 years. It consisted of tender beef and melted cheese inside sourdough bread grilled to a golden crisp, impressive in its crunch factor even when dipped into the rich birria consommé.
The standout of the night, however, was the Fish ‘n Chips served with triple-fried potato wedges and coleslaw. The battered Alaskan cod arrived golden and crisp — the fillet was so large it hung off the plate. Don’t forget to ask for malt vinegar. Seven Olive really understands the sensory experience of crunch. The fries were also battered so the inside was intensely creamy (think, mashed potato) while deeply crisp outside.
Though completely full, we somehow found room for dessert after the manager insisted the butter cake was not to be missed. Warmed and topped with vanilla ice cream and mixed berry compote, it proved a fitting finale. The waitstaff service and attention were excellent — from the bartender sending a slightly tweaked Huckleberry Fizz for our feedback to a busboy sharing the story behind the restaurant’s namesake olive grove near the tennis courts.

Spa Esmeralda: Desert Wellness & Recovery
As someone who is always icing some aching muscle on my body after playing tennis six days a week, recovery becomes the priority. I was eager to try the Spa Esmeralda’s restorative therapy in the Renew Recovery Lounge. I learned that Ironman competitors often crank the intensity up to level seven; I stayed firmly at level one after deciding level two was a bit too much — yet another reason to admire the toughness of those triathletes.

The experience begins in a heated lounge chair tucked inside a curtained space. Smart goggles block the light while delivering a gentle temple massage to ease eye strain, as air-filled sleeves wrap each leg in rhythmic waves that stimulate circulation and encourage full-body recovery. The spa’s soundtrack was a bit distracting — I recommend wearing your earbuds with your favorite type of meditative music. With the right tunes, you may find yourself drifting off into a calm, near-sleep state.
If a massage is more your speed, my therapist expertly worked through chronic knots (hello, hip pain), leaving me noticeably looser. I continued the reset with time in the steam room before settling into the Eden-like garden courtyard exclusively reserved for spa guests. I downed no fewer than six small glasses of the cucumber water — between the massage releasing toxins, the steam room heat, and the jacuzzi, my body demanded it. I could have easily lingered for hours — some guests had already settled in with light lunches — but my sister and the pool were waiting. It’s the kind of reset that sends you back on court ready to play another set.

Play All Day
After a pickup game of queen of the court with visiting guests on the resort’s courts, I cooled down in a private cabana — whirring ceiling fan, a cooler of iced water, and a fruit platter so generous we ended up with two takeaway containers to snack on back in our room.
Beyond the pool, you’ll find two tennis courts (which you’ve already scoped out), four pickleball courts, morning yoga on the lawn, a fitness center with Peloton bikes, and golf next door. As everyone knows, finding courts can be a challenge so the complimentary court time is an awesome benefit. There are loaner rackets and balls, but I recommend packing your own.
Families traveling with children will find plenty to keep them busy — a large display near the elevators showcased an impressive range of kids’ activities, including an arcade with virtual reality experiences and duckpin bowling.

And if tennis is your passion, I could not imagine a better place to call your home base than at Renaissance Esmeralda. For those who want to explore beyond the courts, Greater Palm Springs offers hiking and canyon drives worth the detour — or stay close and let the days unfold at your own pace. But for those who measure spring not by flowers but by first serve at Indian Wells, Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa becomes part of the ritual spring pilgrimage.
