Tella Thera might just be the most intentional stay in Crete. The concept of eco-luxury is often promised but rarely delivered with absolute integrity. Too often, sustainability feels like an afterthought or a token gesture hidden behind standard hotel practices. At Tella Thera in the hillside of Kissamos Crete, the philosophy is undeniably eco led. Project of former tech executive Loukas Tourkomanis and his wife Chevon Low, environmental consciousness and thoughtful engineering are woven into the fabric of the guest experience, proving that having a green initiative doesn’t require the sacrifice of absolute refinement.

Architectural Calm and Village Design

The resort is built on land that was originally an olive grove. Rather than clearing the terrain, the founders meticulously uprooted and replanted all of the trees. A deep respect for the local landscape sets the tone for the architecture, which utilizes eye pleasing wide, sweeping arches and soft, neutral, woody textures that mirror the sun-bleached surroundings.

Drawing on his tech background to map out detailed guest experiences, Tourkomanis designed the resort to mimic the layout of a traditional Greek village, intentionally balancing the modern traveller’s frequent desire for restful isolation with a post-pandemic hunger for human connection. The result at Tella Thera is a layout built around what he calls “natural friction.” By placing the communal spaces at the physical centre of the property, guests naturally stroll through the heart of the resort on their way to their suites. This layout gently encourages spontaneous interactions with staff and fellow travellers, without compromising on personal space.

The design ethos carries seamlessly into the Nature Suite, a soothing space defined by its muted tones and understated furnishings. The suite features its own private saltwater pool, offering a gentler, chemical-free alternative to traditional resort swimming. The suite’s floor-to-ceiling glass frontage makes the garden feel as though it is growing inside. Small gestures make for a thoughtful stay; upon arrival, guests are gifted a pencil tipped with seeds, intended to be planted after use, a small, tangible reminder of the resort’s circular philosophy and an invitation to remain mindful of one’s surroundings.

Wellness and Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the quiet pulse of the entire experience, extending naturally into the outdoor spaces. High above the central village layout sits an outdoor yoga deck, positioned to offer a sweeping, meditative view that carries across the entire resort all the way down to the coast.

Below ground, the Thaleria Spa offers exceptional traditional treatments, but the true focal point of the wellness space is the magnesium mineral pool. Renowned for its therapeutic, anti-inflammatory properties, a sauna circuit ending with a soak here feels less like a standard spa amenity visit and more like a deliberate ritual for recovery.

A deep tissue massage here is similarly ritualistic, rejecting the generic, feather-light strokes of typical resort spas in favour of a highly technical, intuitive approach. The therapists work with local Cretan oils infused with wild mountain herbs to knead away the tension of travel. Every movement is deliberate, tailored entirely to the individual body rather than a memorised sequence. Combined with the subterranean stillness of the spa, the treatment leaves you with a profound sense of physical reset, acting as the perfect prelude to a slow, sun-drenched afternoon.

Plant-Forward Gastronomy at Anemoia Resturant

The resort’s culinary heart beats at Anemoia, an open-air restaurant that serves all three meals of the day beneath the Cretan sky and acts as the anchor for the resort’s communal friction. Whilst situated within the hotel grounds, Anemoia operates with the distinct energy of an independent destination, regularly drawing in a discerning crowd of outside guests. This influx of external diners prevents the space from ever feeling like a closed hotel circuit, injecting a vibrant, worldly hum into the evenings. The design encourages a social cross-pollination, where full tables and low lighting blur the lines between residents and visitors.

The menu is strictly seasonal and distinctly plant-forward, celebrating hyper-local Cretan ingredients whilst weaving in contemporary global flavours and plating. From the morning’s wild thyme honey drizzled over thick yoghurt to the evening’s slow-roasted beef infused with mountain herbs, every dish feels directly tethered to the surrounding landscape.

By partnering closely with local producers, the kitchen turns out fresh, innovative plates that feel deeply connected to the island without being bound by rigid tradition. It is a dining experience that perfectly mirrors the resort itself: thoughtful, highly refined and effortlessly sophisticated.

The Design Hotels Stamp

It comes as no surprise that Tella Thera has been inducted into the Design Hotels collection, a global portfolio reserved for properties that reject cookie-cutter luxury in favour of a distinct architectural narrative and visionary ownership. Membership within this curated group requires more than just aesthetic appeal; it demands a soul, a progressive ethos and an original perspective on hospitality.

Tella Thera fits this brief seamlessly. By embedding the resort into the rolling cliffside of Kissamos and crowning the suites with subterranean, planted rooftops, the property mirrors the Design Hotels commitment to culturally grounded, sustainable design.

An Authentic Return to Source

Ultimately, Tella Thera succeeds because it rejects the rigid hospitality formulas that often govern five-star resorts. The property with eighty per cent local islanders metric, not merely as a hiring quota, alters the entire cadence of the property. At Tella Thera, the team aren’t reading from a script but instead approach as deeply knowledgeable cultural conduits, sharing personal recommendations with the easy confidence of old friends.

This hyper-local connection transforms how guests interact with the island. Conversations with the team over a morning espresso lead to discovering secluded rocky coves completely missed by online travel blogs. A raw, un-curated pride in how they discuss their island brings a genuine sense of Cretan community directly into the resort’s village layout.

By designing spaces that allow people to easily alternate between complete isolation and genuine community, Tourkomanis and Low have built something that feels alive rather than manufactured. It is a sanctuary stay that pulls off the ultimate luxury travel paradox: giving you the quiet space to completely disconnect from the world, whilst ensuring you remain entirely connected to the soul of Crete.

This balance is felt in the physical rhythm of a day spent here. You can spend the morning in absolute solitude, tucked away by your private saltwater pool or watching the sea from the high altitude yoga deck, completely removed from the presence of others. Yet, the moment you step onto the paths that wind toward the central square, the architecture gently coaxes you back into the collective energy of the resort.

It’s an intentional design that respects the modern traveller’s need for dual states of being. There is no social obligation, nor is there the sterile coldness often found in hyper-isolated retreats. Instead, the property functions like a breathing ecosystem, proving that true luxury doesn’t sit in permanent seclusion, but in the freedom to choose exactly when to withdraw and when to belong.
