Last month, Team Coco got to live out our princess dreams by attending the truly outrageous annual Life Ball in Vienna. The Life Ball is one of the biggest social events in Vienna’s bustling cultural calendar and takes place each year amidst the breathtaking gothic architecture of the Weiner Rathaus.

Organised by AIDS LIFE, the Vienna Life Ball has been actively raising awareness about HIV and AIDS since 1993. Founded by Gery Kessler and Torgom Petrosian, the Life Ball has become one of the world’s most important AIDS Charity Events and donates its seven-digit proceeds to a number of aids projects all around the world. As Austria’s biggest fundraiser for HIV/AIDS, the Life Ball attracts a flurry of celebrities to its worthy cause each and every year. Some note-worthy appearances this year were Caitlin Jenner, Paris Jackson, Patty LaBelle, and Adrian Brody who all wore the Life+Patch kicking off a year round campaign encouraging everyone to get tested.

To say that the Life Ball was a bit eclectic is probably the biggest understatement of the year. This year’s theme was a strange yet beautiful homage to the Sound of Music, and the Life Ball transformed the breathtaking facade of the Weiner Rathaus into an awe-inspiring Sound of Music Landscape. A set that captured the Alpine beauty of the Salzburg countryside. A bearded Conchita Wurst played the role of Maria Von Trapp, kicking off a wonderfully bonkers show, that was part broadway musical, part anarchic parade, and part red carpet wedding fashion show. All this culminated with AMFAR’S Epic Ride, which brought actors Adrian Brody, Michiel Huisman, Ian Bohen, and Gilles Marini (to name a few) from Zurich to Vienna on classic motorcycles; representing the epic journey that Life+ has fought against HIV AIDS in the last twenty-five years.

To top it all off, Vienna’s local attendees definitely did not disappoint not the style department. A parade of feathered Lederhosen and Dirndl inspired looks, majestic gravity-defying ballgowns, and leather clad attendees all presented a spirit of love, tolerance and acceptance. Once the party really got started after midnight, there was no telling the difference between Hollywood celebrities, and enthusiastic costumed locals with a penchant for DIY. Gay, straight, old, young, Lederhosen or Dirndl – everyone was welcome to celebrate Vienna’s most spectacular evening. After all, the Life Ball is all about fighting the stigma against AIDS so intolerance and discrimination were not welcome to the festivities. And once all the revelries had concluded, and attendees stumbled back to their hotels, (at 5.a.m, probably – who even knows) we can rest assured that we probably witnessed the craziest party of our lives, and hey! It was also for a truly worthy cause.

Hannah Tan-Gillies attended the Vienna Life Ball, in support of HIV AIDS charities held every year in Austria’s capital at the Vienna City Hall; 2019 Life Ball will be end May/beginning June. Tickets for 2019 go on sale early 2019 (www.lifeplus.org/tickets/en) Example prices from 2018 are: €90 – discount for guests in flamboyant costume, guidelines provided; €180 – elegant/themed costume; €559 – international package including flights, accommodation and entry.

Europe is home to some of the largest rivers in the world. The continent’s rivers provide stunning scenery, from the towering Alps to the serene Mediterranean. They also offer a variety of experiences, from whitewater rafting to leisurely cruises. If you are planning to experience what these amazing rivers offer, you may be wondering where to start. Here are the four largest rivers in Europe and some suggestions for how to make the most of them:

Volga river

The Volga is the longest river in Europe, and it runs through central Russia. This river is a great way to experience the culture and history of Russia, as it passes through many important cities like Kazan and Samara. Flowing directly through the country’s heartland, the Volga River is an essential waterway for commerce and transportation. It is also a popular destination for recreation, offering boating, fishing, and swimming opportunities.

There are many different ways to explore the Volga River, but one of the best is taking a river cruise. Several companies offer cruises, varying in length from a few hours to a few days. The cruises typically include stops at various towns and cities along the river, allowing passengers to explore the sights and sounds of each place. Another great way to experience the Volga is to go camping or hiking along its banks. There are many different trails to choose from, and they offer a unique opportunity to see the river up close.

The Danube River

The Danube is the second-longest river in Europe, and it runs through ten different countries. This river is a great way to experience the diverse cultures of Europe as it passes through major cities like Vienna, Budapest, and Belgrade. And it runs through ten countries, including Austria, Germany, Hungary, and Romania. The best way to experience the Danube is by taking a river cruise. This will allow you to see all the different sights along the river and give you a chance to sample the local cuisine.

You can also go kayaking. Kayaking is a great way to experience Europe. Not only will you get an up-close look at the river’s wildlife and scenery, but you’ll also get a workout in at the same time. It’s also relatively easy to learn, making it an excellent activity for people of all ages and abilities. If you’re interested in trying Kayaking and want to purchase your kayak, you can find a cheap kayak that fits your budget and needs. Also ensure you have the proper safety gear, including a life jacket and a paddle.

Ural

The Ural river is also one of the longest rivers in Russia, and it has been an important trade route since the early days of Russian history. The river flows for more than 2,000 miles from its source in the Ural Mountains to its delta on the Caspian Sea. Along the way, it traverses various landscapes, from dense forests to spacious steppes. The Ural river is also home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including many rare and threatened species such as the great white pelican, greater flamingo, and glossy ibis.

You can also go swimming, canoeing, or fishing in the river. If you take a cruise, you will be able to stop at different villages and learn about the culture and traditions of the people who live there. For those looking for an adrenaline-filled adventure, many companies offer whitewater rafting trips down the rapids of the Ural river.

Don River

It is the fifth-largest river in Europe, measuring 1870 kilometers long. The river has its origins in the town of Novomoskovsk in the Tula region. It flows eastward through several different regions before eventually emptying into the Sea of Azov. Along the way, the Don River collects water from several tributaries, the largest of which is the Seversky Donets.

The river is a critical economic lifeline for the region, providing water for irrigation and transportation. The Don is also a popular destination for recreation, as it flows through a variety of different landscapes, including forests, steppes, and meadows.

There are many ways to enjoy the Don River. You can go fishing, swimming, or boating in the river. You can also enjoy the scenery by hiking or biking along the river banks. If you want to learn more about the history and culture of the area, you can visit one of the many museums or historical sites located along the river.

If you’re looking to experience some of the best that European rivers offer, then be sure to check out the Volga, Danube, Ural, and Don rivers. These Rivers offer a wide range of adventure, relaxation, and exploration opportunities. Whether you’re interested in kayaking or rafting down powerful rapids, fishing in tranquil waters, or simply taking in the picturesque scenery as you cruise by on a luxurious riverboat, Europe’s rivers have something for everyone.

As avid travellers here at House of Coco magazine, when we stumbled across PLŪKT tea and their tea sachets that are perfect for travel, we were hooked. Their tea is popular amongst our team which lead to intrigue, just who IS behind this brand?

The brand has introduced the world to herbal teas from the meadows and forests of Northern Europe and PLŪKT proudly call themselves the pioneers of Nordic tea culture.

We spent some time with the founder Mara Lieplapa to find out more…

Tell us about the journey that lead you to launching PLŪKT…

My family always encouraged to follow my own path, try as many things as possible and use my talents. So this entrepreneurial mindset was encouraged from early days, also in school we received lots of support to starting our own student businesses. So my first one was when I was 14 years old – I made grain pillows (all organic and from natural materials) which could be warmed up and later on used to relief joint pains and headaches. Also then the motivation and mission was quite similar to that of PLŪKT – bring joy, comfort and build something meaningful and beneficial. When I started university I was actively looking for my own business idea – attending all the conferences I could possibly attend, taking part in student competitions, trade shows, events, gatherings. All the places where I could meet entrepreneurs, have inspiration and contacts. I also used every opportunity to do exchange studies (in Sweden, Austria), so I gathered quite some international network, too. I had a chance to attend exchange trip to China where I visited their local “Silicon valley” in Beijing. I was amazed by all the startup ecosystem and innovations they are building. However, a few blocks away there was this very traditional tea market there. And suddenly all the dots and questions connected – what if I could create a Nordic tea culture by building brand which acts in a startup-like manner? It would allow me to connect my love for nature and purpose with fast-growing, innovative startup ecosystem. In fact, my mother has a wide knowledge of Northern European herbs and I thoughts that this is a resource that we already have in order to start a science-based company. After coming back, we started to create branding and design for PLŪKT. I was then 21 year old.

Also, I have always been passionate about international environment so it was my mission to build export-oriented brand. Today, PLŪKT exports 70% of products.

Being a sustainable brand is at the forefront of what you do, why was this important to you?

I grew up in a family where both parents are related to environmental sciences and nature preservation. Since we were kids, my sibling and I were always taught to take care of nature, find our peace and passion there. We spent incredible amount of time in nature. It seemed such a common sense back then, but in reality it was a privilege knowing how many people in the world have never seen such natural wilderness that we experienced from early age. Of course, this respect for nature has been within me since then and while I was looking for my business idea I had this ultimatum – I want to build something that benefits people and nature. Not to build just another thing in the world which will end up somewhere. I wanted to show the love for wilderness and nature through PLŪKT, at the same time raising awareness of biodiversity in Northern Europe and why it matters to preserve it. PLŪKT branding and design reflects exactly that. People fancy it and they are loving the message. I believe people don’t want to hurt something that they love or fancy, therefore there is a hope that they won’t harm nature either.

How do you want people to feel when they drink your tea?

First of all, joy, pure joy. I want them to feel connected with their authentic self, take it as a moment for themselves or for something that has high meaning in their lives. We are all so busy being busy that oftentimes do not prioritize enough the beautiful authenticity that lies within each and every one of us. We hope that PLŪKT tea time encourages to open up to ourselves for exploration. We love to see people taking PLŪKT with them to their favourite activities – be that a hiking trip, a travel, an on-the-go morning while living “big city life moment”, yoga class, meetup with friends and most importantly when surprising someone with this nourishing gift. Just like in nature, no two flowers or leaves are the same, so aren’t people. Wildlife inspired us to build authentic brand, therefore we hope that people feel this connection with nature while having a cuppa.

Looking back since launching the brand, is there anything you would do differently?

I would be louder (as in, less shy). Being rather an introverted person, I would oftentimes be seen as “the quite one” while in reality I had so much to say! Ultimately, it turned out into PLŪKT. As a young entrepreneur, it was always a challenge to gain recognition, gain respect and oftentimes society labeled “the loud ones” as those who are most impactful and have achieved something in their lives. Meanwhile, I was building PLŪKT in solitude and up to date am still cherishing the fact that my actions speak louder than words.

Also, I wish I have learned to ask for help and advice much more earlier. It would have saved me lots of time and some money, too.

Who’s involved in the business and what are their roles?

Co-founder Līga is responsible for all the science behind herbs and tea. She is our tea Master and holds the knowledge of benefits of herbal teas and comes up with new tea blends. She is also my mother and we make a good team, however we are not the typical family business. We encourage and are constantly looking for new talents to join our team. We have superpeople for social media, hard-working and accurate ladies working in manufacturing. And let’s not forget those over 30 family-owned farms who are supplying certified-organic herbs from wild meadows and forests.

Talk us through an average day in your life…

I wake up at 6-6:30am. I do a quick workout and stretching for about 20 minutes to get my body going. On Sunday nights I make a schedule for the upcoming week, however I am leaving Mondays as very flexible. I notice that on Mondays there are so many events suddenly coming up that can change the whole plans in instant. First part of the day is very productive for me so I work on the long-term plans at this time of the day. I have relatively late lunch, around 2pm, but I always eat wholesome and rich breakfast. Perhaps my favourite meal of the day. In the afternoon I love to change my working environment and choose to work from home, from a café or coworking space. Since I started my MBA studies in Finland, I have been traveling between Finland and Latvia quite often. And honestly, the more I am on the go, the more I get done because there is no time to overthink or expand too much in your texts. In office, it might feel otherwise. Afternoons are for meetings and lighter tasks. I would do some project visualisations, mood boards and creative activities. I end my work day around 4pm. Then I go for some hobbies – hiking, climbing, running, dancing or going for a cake with friends. Give a call or face time my family. Have a dinner and some me time, which could include reading, journaling, visualization and just thinking. I leave some room for spontaneity and if I notice a nice concert or event happening right now, chances are that I will go for it. Often I have late evening Zoom calls with business partners in US or likewise very early ones with partners located in Asia. I love this dynamics.

Do you plan on expanding the range in the future to offer more than tea?

We are already experimenting with different cold drinks where PLŪKT tea is used as a basis. Also we work on tea ware collection and development of other accessories relevant to tea.

What do you do when you are lacking creativity?

I get very active and sporty. I have always had so much energy and when I don’t feel creative I just know that my energy has been piled up for a while and just asks for release. I love climbing, hiking, running. Part of my love will always belong to dancing which was the second option of mine when I was thinking of career path. Oftentimes if I really need to come with something, but nothing amazing is coming up I go with “done is better than perfect”. The thing is, through these 3-4 years with PLŪKT I have learned to trust myself a lot and I am sure that creativity will come as soon as I start working on the task. I love what I am doing so naturally I want it to work out as good as possible. One thing I can tell for sure, tasks regarding administration, bureaucracy etc. definitely are decreasing my levels of creativity and therefore I schedule days just for these ones, so they would not interrupt creative parts of the business too much.

How much has social media played a role in the success of your brand?

A lot, most of the media has deepened their connection with our story through social media.

What is your go-to quote when lacking motivation?

“If you sell the excitement, you sell the jet.” I remember hearing this in one of the conferences about 5-6 years ago. I was thinking to myself – yeah, resource-wise, I really don’t have much to offer at the moment as a student. But I do have a time, enthusiasm and energy! Sometimes that is all it takes to go from 0 to 10, especially when lacking motivation. Getting excited for how much you have done already and enthusiastic for the upcoming journey. It is charming and this kind of energy attracts.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is on your must visit list?

Since I can remember, Nepal and hiking Everest basecamp has been on my bucket list. And fortunately this is another dream that will come true later this year! Now my next dream destinations are Cancun in Mexico, New Zealand, South Korea and Chile.

What does self care mean to you?

It means saying “no” to things that are not of use AND are not bringing me joy. These days it is easy to get lost in all the requests and needs of others. Self care is remembering to prioritizing your values and your time.

Self care is taking time off without waiting for breakdown. It is about scheduling your hobbies, quality time with friends and family just the way you schedule your daily work tasks.

One of my personal favourite self care activity is baking cakes and making pastries in combination with a hike later in day.

Where do you see the brand in the next 5 years?

Still ad the pioneers of Nordic tea culture and hosting international tea mastercups in our tea house in Madona region, Latvia. We are a recognized player in tea world. By then, Nordic Black tea – caffeine free alternative to black tea made from wild Fireweed herb – has become the thing and becoming the standard in tea world. I see that there are over 300 certified organic farms joining our supplier network in order to protect biodiversity of Northern Europe.

Have you ever considered taking a skiing holiday in the summer? Combine your love of skiing and après ski with the likes of a lake dip and other more typical summertime activities. If you like the sound of hitting the snow this summer, we’ve got some food for thought.

With some inspiration from travel company, Basecamp, offering snowboard instructor courses and gap year adventures, here’s four locations to consider. From Austria to Argentina, find the perfect snow-filled destination for your 2022 summer escape!

Austria: Zell am See-Kaprun

First on our list is the breathtaking Kitzsteinhorn glacier, a mountain in the Hohe Tauren range of the Central Eastern Alps. The ginormous mountain is 3,000 meters above ground, which means the peak is blanketed by white snow all year long! Cable cars and lifts are available to safely take you to the top of the mountain, where you can enjoy the astonishing views of the Austrian countryside and Lake Zell. Oh, and did we mention it is accessible 365 days a year?

When you reach the top of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, relax and admire the view from the impressive mountaintop restaurant. The Gipfel offers panoramic views while serving delicious Austrian food and drinks. What more could you want after a long day skiing?

After you’ve wined and dined, head on down to the ground and lounge by the stunning Lake Zell. In the summertime, the crystal blue waters are serene, and you can even take a dip! The green grass on the ground is in stark contrast to the snow-covered peaks above, but that’s one of the many charms of visiting Zell am See-Kaprun during the summer.

Norway: Stryn

Next on our list are the picturesque mountains of Stryn, a quaint village located in the west of Norway. The area is full of natural beauty, with serene lakes and mountains, such as the Briksdalsbreen glacier. This attracts visitors from all around the world and is well-known for being as snowy as a Christmas postcard all year round!

The best place to ski in Stryn is the Sommerski Centre, and it is truly a place like no other! The snowy slopes span across 4km of mountain ranges, and they’re usually filled with people enjoying a summer in the snow between June and July. There are social events, such as barbecues, where you can meet fellow skiers and make memories that will last a lifetime!

But did you know you can ski in your summer attire? Whether you’ve always wanted to slide down the slopes in your bikini or snowboard in your shorts, the Sommerski mountains of Stryn are the place for you. Remember to bring sun cream – you’re going to need it!

Australia: Perisher Resort

If you want to spend this summer on a skiing adventure far away, travel down under and visit the icy slopes of Australia. As Oceania is in the Southern hemisphere, Australian seasons are reversed, and you can enjoy the wintery mountains between June and October.

Perisher Resort is one of the best places to ski in the Aussie wilderness. The huge resort has 47 lifts that operate between 8.30 am-5 pm every day, so you can make the most out of your holiday every day! And if you’re feeling adventurous enough, you can explore the backcountry surrounding Perisher Resort. Snowy Mountains Backcountry offers tours of the Guthega River and the Main Range.

The Australian mountain ranges are a sight to behold!

Have you ever wanted to ski beneath the stars? At Perisher, you can sail down the white lanes between 6-9 pm on Tuesdays and Saturdays. After a moonlit ski, there are lots of places to eat, drink, and socialise in Perisher Village. What more could you want?

Argentina: Bariloche

The final location on our list is Bariloche, a small town located in the West of Argentina. As winter in Argentina takes place between June and September, this is the perfect place to go on a summer skiing holiday in 2022. Bariloche is a great place to immerse yourself in Argentinian culture and indulge in the finest chocolate ever made. As an added bonus, the closest ski resort is only 12 miles away!

The resort is named the Catedral Alta Patagonia, but you’ll probably hear the locals call it the Cerro Cathedral. The mountains are extremely beautiful as they are situated next to the Nahuel Huapi National Park and the Lake District of Patagonia.

As well as the natural beauty surrounding the resort, the resort offers glade skiing, otherwise known as tree skiing. This is an amazing opportunity to put your skills to the test and try something new! Everyone knows skiing down a mountain is beautiful but whizzing past snow-covered trees is a unique experience as picturesque as it gets.

We hope we’ve inspired you to hit the slopes and spend summer 2022 in the snow. Skiing holidays book up fast, so if you’re considering hitting the slopes next summer, it’s best to get booked up quickly. Whether you’re learning to ski or becoming a ski instructor, the frosty mountains are a delight all summer long. With countless stunning views to choose from and lots of opportunities for après ski, where will you go on your next adventure?

We recently had the pleasure of interviewing Sandras Malereien, an artist from Austria. Her art epitomises her passion for nature, animals and mythology as you will see below.

Tell us about the journey that lead you to launching your brand…

I’ve always been interested in ancient cultures, mythology, and rock art. With my paintings I have found a way to combine these three components.

Being an artist always comes with challenges, what’s been the biggest one you have faced and how did you overcome that?

Mark Twain put it in a nutshell: “Everyone with a new idea is a weirdo. Until the idea is successful”. The greatest challenge is to be taken seriously by those around you. Many begrudge your dream, or smile at you sympathetically and look forward to your failure. I went my way step by step, thought about how I could make my pictures available to a wider audience and the key to that is social media.

How would you describe your artistic flair in three words?

Somehow-Somewhere-Sometime
Mythology, Animal and Nature Protection

How do you want people to feel when they first see your work?

I want people to feel like the radio is playing their favorite songs at full volume. I want to evoke exactly this feeling of happiness in you.

If you to describe your personal style in three words, what would they be?

Childlike, Dreamy, Naïve

What advice would you offer to anyone wanting to become an artist?

First come up with a concept. Think about which direction you want to take, look what is already on the market and above all, believe in your success.

Talk us through an average day in your life…

I sit at my desk at 6 a.m. every day and do my work. But not only during the week I do get up early in the morning, on weekends I am often up at 6. Then I grab my dog and march out into nature. You can watch how nature awakes and this is where I get most of the inspiration for my paintings.

How much has social media played a role in the success of your brand?

Nowadays it is almost impossible to escape social media. You can present your work to the whole world with just one click. Through social media I reach people all over the world. People from India in particular keep telling me how they like my pictures.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Australia. This continent has so much wonderful things to offer, like its modern cities or its many beautiful nature parks. There is something for everyone. Australian natives settled the Australian continent around 60,000 years ago. These people have a tremendous knowledge of nature. I have a lot of respect for them.

What is your go to quote when lacking motivation?

“Do only once what others say you can’t do it, and you’ll never have to pay attention to their limits again”

James Cook

Musically, Ed Sheeran is my absolute role model. I have already seen him twice at live concerts in Austria. His songs are powerful and always spread a good mood, which really motivates me.

What’s next for you and the brand?

In autumn I have an exhibition in Switzerland. There is still a lot of work to be done. Since I love to cook and I really want to pass on our old family recipes to my children, which go back to the 18th century, I am currently working on a cookbook that will be a combination of my travelling, recipes and my paintings. I would also like to open a gallery cafe with my children. Where people can come and relax from everyday life, even if it’s just for a quick coffee. A place where guests find nature, art and good food in harmony.

What does self care mean to you?

I have to admit that self-care is not my top priority. I am a single mother, so my children always have priority. But the older they get, the more I treat myself otherwise you run the risk of being burned out quickly. I shape my life in such a way that I feel good, I always keep my mind in shape with interesting tasks and get inspiration for my next vacation from travel magazines like yours, and since I also like to cook I try new recipes on weekends.

Nancy Zuccarelli is the founder of Chloe…with Love. A brand that one day she never would have believed would be hers. After years in a corporate career, there came a time when Nancy could no longer ignore her inner passion and true labour of love and her inner creative was unleashed to the world.

Nancy is first and foremost an ultimate boss. Her career is nothing short of aspirational but her tenacity and self belief is what really makes her stand out from the crowd. We spent some time with her to find out more…

Tell us about the journey that led you to launching your brand Chloe with Love…

It’s been a long journey, the majority of it was spent with me working in large Corporate organizations in Executive Sales Leadership positions, dreaming of starting my own jewellery line. Do not get me wrong, I love Corporate, and I love leading dynamic teams, but part of me needed the creative release and the dive into a world that I am so passionate about. Throughout my career, I would design pieces in my head only, searching for that perfect piece and never quite finding it. I would buy myself jewellery every time I received a large bonus as a gift to myself to say thank you “me”. Working with many amazing women over my career, I realized that this little self-care practice I had, was not shared by many. In fact, most of the women I met did very little to reward themselves for the amazing things they were doing. It was a story I heard repeatedly.

Then I met Joe, my jeweler extraordinaire, he is a successful second-generation jeweler, who is well known for creating extraordinary engagement and wedding rings as well as other custom design pieces. He made me some pieces and I was hooked. Being able to have unique pieces made just for me added another level of sentimental attachment and meaning.

When COVID hit, I desperately felt that I needed to do something more with my life. I made the decision that if I did not make the leap now, my dream would never materialize. There would never be a better time. I kept working at my day job and during every free moment I got, I started to work on creating Chloe …With Love. Joe agreed to work with me, I had never worked in the jewellery business, so having him has been a gift. The first thing I did was create my logo, then I decided what my brand would stand for… then the pieces started coming. My first piece was The Power Within Me Premium Turquoise Pendant. I drew one in blue and one in pink… the blue one came first….

Where did your love for stones come from?

So first of all, I have always had a passion for all the glitters and sparkles. Another passion of mine is wellness. As a child I would collect stones wherever I went, on the beach, along gravel roads, and in the mountains when we travelled. I would always find stones that I thought were special, especially if they were coloured. My mother also had some special jewellery that I would just marvel over… and still do. As I started researching the symbolism of my favourite stones, I made the link with wellness and throughout my adult life I have bought stones as part of my wellness routine to help me find balance, peace, clarity and to reduce my anxieties.

Who’s involved in the business and what are their roles?

So technically I am the only employee of Chloe …With Love… but I have worked alongside some amazing people in order to make this dream start materializing. My husband Paul has helped me a lot and has been my constant supporter along the way. He played a big role in the initial creative process by being my sounding board as I tested ideas on him constantly. I used him as an advisor and someone I could trust to help me make the right decisions. Joe Hasou, my jeweler, handcrafts every single one of my pieces. I lay the seed in the design and he takes it to the next level and makes it a reality. Without Joe and Paul, Chloe would never have taken her first breadth.

Other people I have worked closely with are Kristie Vinet who helped me build the website and taught me everything I know about how to keep it going, as well as helping me start my social media strategy. She and I worked closely together for many months before the world got to see Chloe. Sadly, she passed away from a brain tumour a few months ago. It was devastating. Finally, I collaborated closely with Alessandra Seca who really helped me build a PR strategy. Chloe is in its infancy still, but I do hope to grow…

What’s the process behind launching a new piece of jewellery?

It starts with an idea, or a feeling. Both Joe and I love stones and symbols and we play very well off one another. We will usually go back and forth on a design. I send an image to Joe with a symbol, what it means and what stones I think will work well. He usually plays with it for a few days, adds his magical touch until he gets the right balance in the design. Then we create the mould and start making our test pieces. Joe is a perfectionist so usually the designs translate well into a final piece. We have kept the designs simple and have stayed true to my original concept. This makes it very easy to update the back design or play with new stones to create variations that may resonate more with some people.

What has been the biggest learning curve since launching the business?

My entire career has been in sales and sales leadership and I have always had lots of best-in-class subject matter exerts supporting me and my team. Building Chloe …With Love, I had to learn everything and try and do it myself. I am not a marketer so that has been a steep learning curve. Understanding how to build my own website and the whole social media world has been huge learning for me.

What advice would you offer to anyone wanting to become an entrepreneur?

Follow your dream, do not wait. There will never be a better time than NOW. I wish I had started it sooner, but I am so grateful that my journey has started. It is never too late. Also, ask for help and get advice from experts. There are so many people that can help navigate you through the challenges and unknowns.

The jewellery industry is so fast changing, what trends do you expect to see coming through in the next few years?

I see people wanting jewelers to use more sustainable materials, recycled metals, non-conflict stones, even Pandora announcing they are moving to lab grown diamonds is huge but not a surprise as I see more and more people making those buying choices. I also see a trend towards people wanting more unique and affordable luxuries.

Looking back since launching the brand, is there anything you would do differently?

For the most part, I surrounded myself with experts so that I could learn. I did make a few mistakes by working with some companies that were not experts in jewellery and were looking for me to teach them. I think maybe the only thing I would do a little differently, is perhaps a little more research before making expensive buying decisions to ensure that I was partnering with people who were experts in the jewellery field. Every field or industry has its unique nuances and its understanding those nuances that enable the outcomes you need. At times it was incredibly stressful as I didn’t have the knowledge to direct activities I needed done but I was paying for someone else to learn what they probably should have been experts in already.

How would you describe your personal style?

I think I have a few styles. Doesn’t everyone? My “go-to” looks are a little boho chic, I love colourful floral blouses and dresses in flowing fabrics. I live in denim most days outside of work. My workdays, prior to COVID, were more formal Corporate looks, which I love too. Nothing feels better than a well-made suit and the highest of high stilettos. No matter what I wear, I always add jewellery to my look and a spray of perfume.

Talk us through an average day in your life…

I usually wake up between 5am and 5:30am. I have 5 dogs so my early morning is getting them up, feeding them and then letting them settle down so my husband and I can do our yoga. We do yoga every day, it’s a ritual we both love. After yoga, we walk our pups. We live in the country, so our walks are along a dirt country road passing farms, fields, forests, and rivers. It is quite magical. After our walk, my husband always makes me the most amazing Flat White Oat Milk Latte and then I start working in my office upstairs. My day job is quite intensive, and the days are long. I usually work straight through to dinner time at around 6:30pm. My only breaks are doggie pee breaks and preparing a quick cup of tea. My husband and I usually have very simple dinners during the week. We fit in another dog walk and then I start working on Chloe …With Love. That’s a typical Monday to Friday,

How much has social media played a role in the success of your brand?

Well I am working on the journey to success as we are a new brand and we are totally dependent on social media as we only have an online presence. I am learning more and more every day, but, there is a lot to learn and it is ever changing.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Oh I am travel starved right now. COVID has been tough on us for that. I cannot wait to get back to Arizona. One of my most favourite places on this earth is Sedona. It is a magical place, with intense vibrations for me. I usually go every year and it just inspires me. I cannot only pick one place though as I want to go back to Europe and spend more time in Vienna, London and Paris. I love oceans and mountains and we usually spend time in each of those places a few times a year.

What is your go-to quote when lacking motivation?

I love quotes and read many all the time. When I need that extra motivation though it is not a quote I go to, it is my own breath and my own voice saying, Nancy, breathe, you can do it, just get it done. I self-talk often and I push myself to always put my best forward and finish what I start.

What’s next for the business?

We’ve just started so the goal is to just persevere and continue the journey. I just want more people to get to know us and take away the message that they are worthy of their own love, self-care and gratitude.

What does self care mean to you?

Self-care is so important to me. It is taking care of my physical, emotional, and spiritual self. I do not rely on others to nurture me, I nurture myself. I eat well, I follow a plant-based diet, I exercise, and when I need to, I show myself forgiveness and care. Self-care is also showing up for myself with gratitude. It is my mind and my body that have given me the ability to live the life I have, and I am grateful for it. I treat myself because It makes me feel good and I am worth it.
