In Laura Bartlett’s latest exploration of Leeds’ vibrant culinary scene, she uncovers a hidden gem that is taking the city by storm: Bavette, one of the enticing new restaurants in Leeds, a neighbourhood bistro infused with French flair and warm hospitality.

Join her as she delves into the world of this exciting addition to Leeds’ dining landscape...

If, like me, you are Leeds born and bred, then you will undoubtedly remember the iconic Outside In restaurant in Horsforth. Ah, the nostalgia of the ’90s, those good old days when Outside In was synonymous with special occasions and cherished family memories.

However, as time unfurled its story, the restaurant’s doors closed in the early 2000s, making way for a corporate giant, Pizza Express, much to the dismay of the loyal locals who had always been ardent supporters of the independent establishment that once graced those premises.

But fear not, for there’s a phoenix rising from the ashes! The building has found new life, a new heartbeat pulsating within its walls. Enter Bavette, a neighbourhood bistro exuding French flair, poised to leave an impressive mark on the culinary landscape of Leeds, much like its esteemed predecessors.

Meet the Owners

During my recent visit, I had the pleasure of meeting Clemént, one half of the dynamic duo behind Bavette. Clemént, alongside his partner Sandy, embarked on this gastronomic journey rooted in a shared passion for exquisite cuisine, fine wines and genuine hospitality.

Their story began amidst the ambiance of a quaint wine bar/bistro in London, where their mutual love for all things epicurean kindled the flames of their dream to create a bistro of their own. And now, serendipitously, Sandy’s hometown of Leeds bears witness to the fruition of that dream, with Clément infusing a touch of his native French finesse into the city’s culinary tapestry.

What to expect

Bavette Bistro

At Bavette, brace yourself for a tantalising journey guided by a menu bursting with seasonally inspired, classically infused delights. It’s a delicate dance between generosity and quality, where each dish embodies the essence of everyday elegance. Bavette stands as a testament to the duo’s collective experiences and cherished memories from their culinary escapades—a love letter to the places that have shaped their gastronomic ethos.

What to order

As I skimmed through the menu, tantalising descriptions winked at me, practically begging me to hop aboard a culinary rollercoaster.

From the zesty Cantabrian Anchovies, Shallots and Butter on Toast to the luxurious Picked White Crab perched jauntily atop House Brioche, each dish promised to be a flavour-packed adventure. But it was the Bavette Sunday Roast that truly stole the limelight, boasting succulent lamb nestled alongside a crispy Yorkshire Pudding, Roast Potatoes and a merry band of delectable sides. And then there it was—the grand finale, the pièce de résistance: a Warm Chocolate Sabayon Tart, perfectly accompanied by a scoop of Fromage Blanc Sorbet. Though, I couldn’t help but secretly yearn for a cheeky dollop of ice cream.

The drinks

This bistro is a haven for wine enthusiasts, boasting a menu that would impress even the most discerning of wine connoisseurs. But, as someone on a journey of sober living, I was delighted to discover L’Antidote, a sparkling 0% wine alternative that added an extra layer of sophistication to our meal. Already, before we had bid adieu to Bavette, plans were afoot for our triumphant return—a testament to the warm hospitality and irresistible allure of this charming bistro.

And let’s give a round of applause to Sophia, our beacon of sunshine amidst the dining bustle. Her contagious enthusiasm and genuine passion for the cuisine propelled our dining experience to new heights of bliss.

With its unforgettable flavours, warm hospitality and infectious energy, Bavette has firmly etched itself into the hearts of all who step through its doors, myself included. Until we meet again, Bavette, cheers to many more delicious memories!
