Although family vacations may be fun, sometimes, there’s nothing quite like a break with the girls to make life even more fun. But where should you head with your girlfriends when the winter weather gets you down? Here are some great destinations which are perfect for a short break with your mates.

Charleston, South Carolina

Whether you want to explore Charleston’s fascinating history or just indulge in luxury at a spa resort, this Southern city is an ideal choice. There is so much to see and do here that you and your friends won’t have a dull moment. You can explore heritage and history at the Boone Hall Plantation and then explore downtown for an evening of drinks, dining and fun.

Aruba, The Caribbean

There’s nothing quite like the luxury of a Caribbean island, and what better time to explore this beautiful part of the world than in the winter? Aruba has an average year-round temperature of 82 degrees, so you can relax on a sandy beach, enjoy a cocktail and really enjoy the island vibe. You can enjoy massages at one of the island’s five star resorts, place a bet in a casino or just sip a few cocktails in the sunshine. Bliss!

San Diego, California

Are you and your girlfriends outdoorsy types? Then head to San Diego and enjoy all the leisure pursuits this city has to offer. There’s 70 miles of shoreline for you to jog or cycle along as well as plenty of parks for hiking. You can even take surfing lessons.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Even when it’s snowing in the North, in Florida, it’s always sunny! What could be more glamorous than Fort Lauderdale with its luxurious resorts, sandy beaches and wonderful Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District? You’ll have an amazing time with the girls in the sun before you head back home.

Cancun, Mexico

Cut loose and enjoy yourself with the girls in Mexico! Even if it isn’t spring break, there’s a lot to enjoy in Cancun. Not only is there a stunning beach with the beautiful Caribbean Sea just steps from your front door, there is plenty of history and culture too. Visit Tulum’s ruins and Chichen Itza’s Great Pyramid as well as Rio Secreto’s fascinating caves.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans may be the number one bachelorette party hotspot of the USA, but that doesn’t mean you need to wait until one of your friends gets married to visit this beautiful city! You’ll love the party atmosphere, the atmospheric French Quarter and, of course, Bourbon Street. The Creole and Cajun food has to be sampled to be believed and there’s plenty of authentic bars where you can grab a drink and soak in the vibe.

Miami, Florida

If you want to go as far south as possible and still stay in the USA, Miami is the spot for you and your girlfriends to spend a long weekend. Since the temperature very rarely goes below 60 degrees, this is an ideal destination for a winter vacation. The beach is great for sunbathing all year round, and there’s lots of other wonderful things to do too, from shopping to visiting rooftop spas. There are also plenty of great dive spots here, so if you and your friends love exploring underwater there’s a world of opportunity open to you. Just don’t forget to take all the necessary dive equipment with you – all the information you need can be found on this website.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Vegas offers something for everyone. Do you love placing a wager and playing the slots? Then you’re in the right place. Want to see a show? No problem! Shopping, visiting museums, drinking and eating… all of these things are possible in Sin City. Want to go a little further afield? Then the Grand Canyon isn’t too far away and you can explore it on horseback, by hiking or even by helicopter. You’ll have a wealth of accommodation options to choose from at a wide range of budgets.

These are just some of the best spots to head to with your girlfriends. You’re sure to have an amazing time, even if it’s winter!

If I say camping in the Australian wilderness you’d be forgiven for being a little skeptical. From unfriendly wildlife to just plain uncomfortable temperatures, the Australian outback is not for the faint of heart. That is unless you’re safely tucked away in a 5 star luxury camping experience that combines all of the most beautiful elements of Australia’s rugged outdoors with all of the creature comforts, but none of the uncomfortable creatures.

Australia as a whole is a fairly undeveloped country with plenty of wide open spaces, abundant in natural beauty and local culture. And whilst those of us who call this lucky country home tend to flock to the coastal regions, there’s a lot to be said for hitting the road and heading out into the red heart of Australia. Those that do venture out there are rewarded with an experience of Australia unlike any other they’ve had before.

No matter what corner of this wide land you’re keen to visit, there’s sure to be a luxury camping experience nearby for you to soak in all the natural beauty around you. Here I’ve used my local advantage and put in the leg work, to find the very best (in my opinion) we have to offer, so that all you have to do is make the booking.

Queensland

Queensland. The sun soaked east coast king of Australia. In my unbiased opinion of course. Whilst our fine capital city Brisbane doesn’t really provide a lot of competition for big city Sydney, or cool, artsy Melbourne, Queensland does boast possibly the finest, and most predictable, weather in the country and a ‘beautiful one day, perfect the next’ claim to fame that really can’t be denied.

Nightfall Camp; Lamington National Park

Located about 2 hours drive from Brisbane, Nightfall Camp is located within the World Heritage Listed rainforest region of Lamington National Park, in landscape shaped by lava flows from over 24 million years ago and dense forestation that hides an array of local flora and fauna unlike those found anywhere else in the world. The camp site is completely solar powered and sustainably run, blending the history, geology and indigenous culture of the area into a truly unforgettable experience.

Daintree EcoLodge

Located in another World Heritage Listed jewel in Mother Nature’s crown is the Daintree EcoLodge, about an hour and a half drive from Cairns in tropical far north Queensland. Believed to be over 135 million years old, the Daintree Rainforest is the oldest tropical lowland rainforest in the world, and can be admired here from one of 15 unique canopy treehouses. High above one of the oldest landscapes in the world makes the Daintree EcoLodge one of the most beautiful places to disconnect, relax and recharge whilst soaking in the natural beauty of a land as close to before time as you can get.

The Northern Territory

The beating red heart of Australia; the Northern Territory is a frontier not even many native Aussies have crossed. Whilst the lack of white sandy beaches and the desert climate might seem a little off putting, its definitely worth braving the heat for a genuine outback Australian experience that not many can boast about having.

Longitude 131

In the shadow of the iconic and Australia’s most recognisable natural formation, Uluru rock, Longitude 131 sits in the desert heartland of Australia’s Red Centre, surrounded by the immense beauty of a landscape untouched since the dawn of time. The lodge rests upon the iconic red dunes of the Australian outback and is one of the best places to get in touch with the oldest continuous culture in the world. It’s believed that the sight of Uluru will have a profound impact on your spiritual wellbeing, but don’t take my word for it, get out there and experience it for yourself.

Banubanu Beach Retreat

A little bit less accessible than the rest on this list (as all good destinations are) Banubanu Beach Retreat is located on Bremer Island off the coast of East Arnhem Land and can be accessed by a 15 minute flight leaving Gove Airport. The retreat is located on the traditional land of the Yolgnu people and is used with their permission; introducing travellers to truly sustainable, eco friendly living, in one of the most untouched corners of the world. With beautiful beaches, pristine sunsets and a secluded location, Banubanu is the perfect place to unwind and reconnect with nature.

Western Australia

The biggest state in Australia, WA has the most backyard to play around in, and what a backyard it is. And whilst the east coast of Australia is beautiful, the west coast is something truly unique. Think rust red soil, turquoise waters and kangaroo infested beaches; all primed and ready for your Instagram feed.

Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef

Located on Australia’s other great reef, Ningaloo, Sal Salis is a beach safari camp that seamlessly blends the rugged West Australian Outback with the pristine waters of the Indian Ocean. Nestled amongst the sand dunes of the Cape Range National Park, the retreat is completely sustainably managed, free from the distractions of the modern world, from televisions to wifi. It’s the perfect place to disconnect from the frenetic pace of our modern digital world, and still enjoy the view.

South Australia

Known for world class vineyards, great festivals and sporting events, and a town where people live under the ground, South Australia is a powerhouse destination in Australia if you love beautiful scenery, friendly locals and snobby accents. (Just kidding SA).

Ikara Safari Camp

Located about 4 hours drive from the South Australian capital, Adelaide, in the Wilpena Pound Resort, the Ikara Safari Camp calls the Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park home. Made up of jagged red mountains and ancient gorges, the Flinders Ranges are a significant spiritual place for the local indigenous communities, due to its proliferation of ancient rock art and the natural giant amphitheatre; Wilpena Pound, where Ikara Safari Camp is located. Safely tucked away in one of the most luxurious tents around, there is nothing standing in the way of you fully connecting with your unique and beautiful surrounds.

Victoria

With such a powerhouse and vibrant capital city like Melbourne, you’d be forgiven for eschewing the rest of small state of Victoria in favour of Melbourne’s bustling dining, arts and culture scenes. Forgiven yes, but wise no. Victoria is home to some of Australia’s premier wine regions, beautiful panoramic vistas and some of the best coffee in the country.

Cosy Tents

Located around an hour and half drive from Melbourne in the Macedon Ranges, Cosy Tents that seamlessly blends the relaxation and serenity of a night spent under the stars with the modern comforts of a hotel room. The location is the perfect place to explore the countless art galleries, vineyards and boutique stores that country Victoria has to offer, allowing you to step out of the hustle and bustle of Melbourne’s city centre and explore the great outdoors, in the most luxurious way you can.

Balgownie Estate Winery Retreat and Vineyard

Located around 2 hours drive from Melbourne, the Balgownie Estate Winery Retreat is one of Australia’s premier wine regions. Here you’ll be set up with a luxe tent replete with split system air-conditioning and a view over sprawling hills and gorgeous vineyards before whiling away your evening sampling the beautiful wines and delicious food characteristic of this region of Australia.

New South Wales

When you’re talking Australia, its Sydney that comes to mind first. With its iconic Opera House and its Harbour Bridge, Sydney is kind of the real poster boy for Australia. But beyond the bustling big city, New South Wales offers a nature lovers paradise, from the World Heritage listed Blue Mountain region to white sand beaches reserved almost exclusively for postcards. It’s also Australia’s first official state, and as such as some of the most iconic historic architecture, quaint colonial towns and a rich and colourful history.

Paperbark Camp

Around 3 hours drive south of Sydney you’ll find Jervis Bay; in the shadow of the Booderee National Park, complete with secluded white sand beaches and calm and inviting bays. It is here you will find Paperbark Camp, a luxury camping experience that makes a ‘home among the gumtrees’ a particularly inviting idea. Inspired by African sundowners in the 90s, the team at Paperbark have worked hard to create a place that slows the pace of life; a place that captures the nostalgic feel of a time before iPhones and wifi, without sacrificing comfort or the modern essentials.

Tasmania

The little dot on the exclamation point that is Australia, Tasmania is possibly one of the least visited parts of Australia. Despite lush forests and mountain scenes that would rival some parts of Europe, a severely underrated dining scene, and being home to the Australian Cadbury factory, Tasmania is not the first place that visitors to Australia tend to go. But I think it’s high time they start.

Bay of Fires Bush Retreat

Four hours north of capital Hobart; on the edge of the iconic Bay of Fires you’ll find the Bay of Fires Bush Retreat. Encouraging sandy feet, salty hair and warm log fires, the team at the Bay of Fires Bush Retreat have crafted a beautifully unique Tasmanian camping experience in an area known for its iconic beaches, hiking trails and verdant wildlife. Relax at the end of the day with a glass of the local award winning wine and a perfectly prepared Tasmanian dinner and feel all your worries melt away.

Wingtons Glamping

Complete with wood fires, Persian rugs and Egyptian linen, a night at Wingtons won’t feel like camping in the slightest. Located in the Tamar Valley around 3 hours north of Hobart, Wingtons Glamping offers an experience reminiscent of a vintage safari; become nostalgic with the thoughtfulness of the furnishings, and carefree in the inclusion of modern amenities. Like stepping back to a simpler time, but still being able to catch it all for Instagram. The perfect balance.

Our roving doggy rePAWter TeamCocopup and doting dog mum Hannah Tan-Gillies have checked into The Bradley Hare for a relaxing weekend getaway in Southwest Wiltshire.

The Bradley Hare, located in the quiet yet charming village of Maiden Bradley, gives you the familiar feeling of a traditional village pub but with a twist. Forget your preconceived notions about traditional country inns because The Bradley Hare is that and so much more.

Located in the wildly picturesque grounds of the Duke of Somerset’s estate, The Bradley Hare benefits from and is inspired by the gorgeous pastoral landscapes that surround it. The rooms, which are warmed by roaring fires in the winter months, have been designed by James Thurstan Waterworth, ex-European Design Director of Soho House.

While boasting some handsome 18th and 19th-century furnishings, each of the 12 individually-designed bedrooms exude a muted yet contemporary vibe, elevating the rural chic interiors. Picture glorious free-standing baths, Egyptian cotton sheets, Siberian goose down duvets and a colourful array of contemporary artwork – that is exactly the aesthetic at The Bradley Hare.

We stayed in one of the five generously-sized dog friendly bedrooms in the Coach House. Opposite the pub and with plenty of space to roam, these gorgeous farmhouse style rooms are the perfect place to relax and unwind amidst the sounds and scenery of the great British countryside.

Guests who are staying at The Bradley Hare can expect a complimentary continental breakfast, which exceeded our expectations of continental meals. While hot breakfasts incurred an additional charge, the continental, which offered delicious homemade granola, pain au chocolate, ham, fresh juices, coffees and freshly-baked sourdough with homemade jams and yoghurts will soon make you forget about the lack of a full English.

We were lucky enough to visit during a sun-soaked weekend and so our lunch was enjoyed in The Bradley Hare’s garden. Here, both locals and tourists come together to enjoy delicious food and great company. Inside, the pub’s bar area is dog friendly – perfect for well-behaved dogs like TeamCocopup. The Bradley Hare boasts an ever-changing seasonal menu that makes good use of the fresh and local ingredients to reimagine pub classics. The Bradley Hare is a champion of zero-waste and tries to minimise food waste as much as possible.

This is best exemplified by the ‘Crumbled Pig’s Head’ which is a delicious appetiser made with the offcuts of a pig – ensuring that the whole pig is used. The Pork Belly with anchovy sauce is crispy, tender with the anchovy sauce offering a surprising yet delightful twist to the pub classic. We also liked the cod roe with asparagus and chervil sauce, and the Hake with artichoke heart. All this is paired with a fabulously eclectic wine list and cocktail list. The Bradley Hare was also very accommodating of our dietary requirements, making it a suitable place for those suffering from food allergies and intolerances.

If, during your visit, you only have time to do one thing in Maiden Bradley, then definitely spend the day at Stourhead. This gorgeous National Trust property is just a seven minute drive away from The Bradley Hare and boasts 2,500 acres of unspoilt countryside and breath-taking gardens. There are Palladian structures that add majesty to this place, shady pathways and even a hidden grotto. The gardens are dog-friendly, offering the perfect day out for families and four-legged friends.

Back at The Bradley Hare and run a relaxing bath in your room. It is the best way to recharge after a day of exploring. Between the tranquil interiors, excellent service and even better pub food – there’s plenty to love at The Bradley Hare. We shall surely be returning for another relaxing and magical weekend in Maiden Bradley’s best kept secret.

Since the advent of gambling, casinos have been synonymous with luxury. When one thinks of casino gaming, the first places that are likely to come to mind are the decadent five-star resorts of Las Vegas or the sprawling neo-baroque gambling halls of Monte Carlo. Norwegians also love luxury and therefore they choose the best portal https://norskecasinoportal.com/norske-spilleautomater/ to play online casino.

These days, much of the world’s gambling activity has moved online, as technological trends have brought fully online casinos to the mainstream. In the online casino realm, that passion for luxury and excess has not abated. To show you what we mean, here are our five favorite online casino games that unashamedly celebrate luxury.

Slings Racing
There are few things more luxurious than a day at the races. If you’re looking to re-live the pomp and elegance of Royal Ascot or the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, you can try Slingo Racing, one of the most popular online bingo slots at Paddy Power Casino. The game format merges old-school bingo with video slots, with the theme being a high-class racecourse filled with champion thoroughbreds. With a top prize of 1000x your stake, this game is all about excess.

Gold On Tour
Another Paddy Power classic, this game takes a classic casino format – the lucky Leprechaun – and reinvents it for the 1%. The theme of the game is elite vacations, with different bonus rounds being centered around expensive destinations such as Hawaii, Egypt, and Antarctica, the latter of which is the lieu de choix for the international jet-set. As you spin the reels, the leprechaun
will bounce between the first-class lounge of the airport and these far-flung locales. If you want to feel like a first-class vacationer, this could be the slot for you.

Bankin’ Bacon
For something a little more tongue-in-cheek, the Bankin’ Bacon slot offers a more humorous take on old money high finance. The main character of this 6×4 slot game is, of course, a top hat- wearing pig. The action takes place in the marble and wood-paneled Wall Street bank, complete with fitting symbols such as cheques, stacks of cash, and gold weights. With a top prize of up to 2000x your stake, this is one of the few casino games out there trying to compete with those hefty banker bonuses.

For the truly rich, a standard savings account will simply not do. The 1% tends to keep valuable assets such as gold bars and jewels locked away in the vaults of elite banking institutions around the world, and this is exactly the theme of the Royal Mint slot, created by the Australian developers Big Time Gaming. The symbols in this game constitute all of the things you would find in a private bank vault, including antiques, mysterious jewels, and exotic trinkets. This slot offers a lighthearted nod to those elite locales of the 1% that we mere mortals rarely get a glimpse of.

If you’re looking for games that both celebrate and poke fun at the upper crust, these are the real money casino titles that are worth your time.

Whether we go for stud earrings with inset gemstones, drop earrings, or 20mm gold hoop earrings, we are creating a look that is to get us noticed beyond just a plain look. Hoop earrings can create a pleasing look or a bolder look still if we go for a bigger loop. Gold is considered a luxury choice and the preferred choice by many. 9ct gold is affordable, and as with any gold purchase, an investment in precious metal.

History of Earrings

Earrings have been around for 7,000 years. Their origins can be traced back to ancient Asia. The Egyptians would wear earrings as a symbol of wealth and being of a higher class. Conversely, in Rome earrings were worn only by slaves, and in Greece, by prostitutes. Today, earrings are worn by the majority of women, whether they choose to have their ears pierced or not. When they don’t, for whatever reason, there is always the clip-on alternative to make earring wearing possible.

The earliest earrings that have been discovered by archaeologists relate to ancient Sumerian women. This dates them to possibly as far back as 2500 B.C.E. These earrings would typically be gold hoops. If you want to represent this original look, then the 20mm gold hoop earring would represent a perfect choice. They are not too big to handle and move around with and are hooped earrings of the same material as was originally used.

Earrings made of twisted wire, pendants, and beads were popular in Crete, Cyprus, and Aegean.

History of Ear Piercing

Ear piercing, which allows people to wear the hoop earring style for one, dates back as far as 5,000 years. The holes found in the earlobes of King Tutankhamen’s mummy are evidence that the Egyptians pierced their ears. King Tut, as he is more informally known, was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh. His remains were discovered in a pyramid in Egypt by Archaeologists Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon in 1922.

Different Styles of Earrings

The different types or styles of earrings include:

Hoop Earrings – are round and in the shape of hoops, although also available as ovals, squares, and triangles.

Stud Earrings – a small style that fits snuggly onto an ear lobe.

Cluster Earrings – comprising several gemstones as opposed to the one single stone set in stud earrings.

Drop Earrings – where more length is required. They hang below the earlobe.

Dangle Earrings – dangle and typically of a more intricate design than drop earrings.

Chandelier Earrings – resemble ornate chandeliers and are a type of dangle earring.

Threader Earrings – are a thin piece of metal that threads through and hangs over both sides of an earlobe.

Huggie Earrings – as the name implies, hug or wrap around the earlobe.

Jacket Earrings – have a stone or latch in the front to hold the earring in place, while part of the earring sits behind the ear.

Ear Climbers – are a newer and trending style that, rather than dangle downwards, start at the base and climb up the earlobe.

Materials Earrings are Made From

Earrings tend to be made from precious metals such as gold, silver, or platinum. If you want to avoid nickel from being mixed in because your skin might react, then go for gold that is 14K (14ct) or above or Sterling silver which is 925. That is 925 parts silver with perhaps copper added in as the other metal to give the earring strength. Platinum is the most expensive of these options. Gold is the most popular look with earrings and is very affordable as 9K (9ct). This is a popular and suitable option for most people’s skin.

Platinum earrings studs, known for their durability and timeless elegance, are a popular choice for those seeking high-quality jewelry

Any piece of gold jewellery can be considered an investment piece. This includes gold earrings that have this precious metal as their material. You always have the meltdown value of the gold. Not that beautiful pieces will be melted down for their scrap gold value when beauty is adding to their resale value.

It is good to know that there are so many choices when it comes to earrings. If you want something that stands out just that little bit more than a stud, then go for small diameter hoop earrings, such as 20mm. 9K (9ct) gold is the choice of the majority of earring wearers. They have that shiny and luxurious look while remaining affordable.

Sustainability has become a buzz word in recent years but it’s always refreshing to stumble across a brand that lives and breathes their mission, like Black and Creme. Founded by Le’Marqunita Lowe, this fashion brand operates in a holistic, conscious, and sustainable way to embrace your wardrobe with memories that last a lifetime.

Forget fast fashion and CEO’s that only care about lining their pockets, Le’Marqunita’s mission is so much more than that. With a legacy in the making, we spent some time with her to find out more…

Your list of accolades is something to admire. From being a company founder, educator, author and social justice advocate. Of all of you achievements, which one are you the most proud of?

Thank you for the compliment. To be honest, I am proud of them all. However, accolades are merely stepping stones to do the Divine work that each one of us is called to do by God. If I had to choose, it would be a social justice advocate. Everything else I do are pillars. An author gives me the voice and visuals to carry out the work. Being an educator gives me the grace to collaborate with others while we learn from each other. Being an entrepreneur is the blueprint for bringing the work together in a strategic way that is visible for the world to see.

Where did your love for sustainable fashion and clean beauty come from?

I always had a love for beauty and fashion since I was a kid. I also have such a deep respect for Nature and God. My beauty company Mercury III was actually created from me making handmade cosmetics for others before the company launched to the public in 2015. I self-taught myself how to mix minerals, I studied herbs, I researched plants, I learned colour theory, I was already a student of astrology, and I emerged myself in the study of ancient Egyptian cosmetics. Mercury III is a clean beauty company that combined my Spirituality, love for astrology, and respect for Nature into a physical product of cosmetics. Black & Cremè is the sister company of Mercury III, except it focuses on sustainable fashion. However, with Black & Cremè I noticed sustainable fashion is not accessible to many BIPOC communities, and there is a lot of exploitation that exists. It was crucial for me to integrate environmental justice and Black economics into the mission of the company to be apart of the solution to bridge this gap.

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced as an entrepreneur so far?

My biggest challenge as an entrepreneur has been access to funding as an African American woman. While I think mentorship is amazing and crucial for entrepreneurs, I am mentored out. What I and many other Black entrepreneurs need is funding. Black economics can only shift when access to money is available to create the structures to build companies so we can give back to communities in collaborative ways. Impact is driven by heart, action, and funding.

In your opinion, what sets you apart from other sustainable fashion brands?

To be honest, I wouldn’t say we are doing anything different. We are adding our mission to a sustainable fashion space where Black voices have been ignored when it comes to environmental justice and the supply chain. Even the way we source our inventory targets this problem. We only source our inventory from sustainable designers, Black-owned businesses, and international fair trade organizations. Our sourcing focuses on building economics at the root of the supply chain.

Looking back since launching the brand, is there anything you would do differently?

I’m extremely proud of where Black & Cremè is at now and where we are heading. I wouldn’t do anything differently.

How much has social media played a role in the success of your brand?

Social media is family for our brand!! I absolutely love the influencers and models we collaborate with on Instagram and Tiktok. They are the heart and vision that brings sustainable fashion and our mission to Social media.

What is your go-to quote when lacking motivation?

“Everything is working out best case scenario”.

What advice would you offer to aspiring entrepreneurs that want to launch their own brand?

This is a very unpopular opinion, but I’m speaking based on experience running two businesses. I would tell aspiring entrepreneurs that bigger is not always better. Think about what success looks like to YOU, and don’t compare your entrepreneur journey to any other entrepreneur. Small businesses can still grow without sacrificing their morals. Stay small and utilise the resources that you already have to grow without always seeking more.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is your all time favourite and why?

It is definitely Buenos Aires, Argentina. I lived in Argentina for six months for undergraduate in college. I loved the culture, people, and history.

What’s next for the business?

My goal is plan a sustainable fashion gala where the funds can be used to help us launch our own sustainable designs!

What does self care mean to you?

Self-care is balance of your Body, Mind, and Spirit.

Lower back pain can be debilitating and painful. Back pain can range from minor discomfort to extreme pain. If the pain becomes long-term, it can cause disruptions in your daily routines and your life.

Since lower back pain continues to plague our society, you think we would have the perfect solution or remedy at this point. Unfortunately, we don’t. Certain people go directly to Advil or other pain medication to help dull the pain in their backs. Others contact their local chiropractor for lower back pain. Regardless of your preference for healing modalities, there is always more than you can do yourself. It doesn’t cost anything, and you can perform them directly from the comfort of your own home.

Stretching your body can do wonders for any existing lower back pain that you suffer from. It keeps your body loose and warmed up throughout your day. Lower back stretches can also help avoid injuries in the future by keeping your body limber and in shape. In this article we’ll focus on effective types of stretches you can do to alleviate lower back pain and live a healthier life.

1.) Child’s Pose

This yoga stretch is great for relieving pain and tension built up along your spine and shoulders. Your lower back is your base and foundation. By stretching this out in the morning, you can relieve this area of pain and allow it to properly support the rest of your back. The child’s post increases the blood circulation around this area through the movements it requires. This is a perfect stretch to do first thing in the morning or right before lying down at night. To do this stretch, please follow the given steps:

  1. Place your feet and knees to the ground, sitting so that your hips rest upon the heels of your feet.
  2. Layout your hands forward onto the ground, palms facing the ground.
  3. Stretch out your hands by leaning forward onto the ground, until your knees start touching your stomach (akin to how a cat stretches after waking up).
  4. Hold this pose for a minute and stretch back up if you feel any unease. Then repeat.
In case you experience any discomfort during this stretch, you can either widen your stance (knees) or replace the mat with a softer one to provide more ease to this movement.

2.) Knee-to-chest Stretch

This exercise gives your lower back flat ground to rest on while loosening up the muscles through the movement of your legs. This is better for people who have consistent bouts of lower back pain as it does not put much pressure on the back but rather, relaxes it. Gravity feels much lighter in this position. By giving your lower back more freedom to move in a relaxed state, your muscles can stretch more and relieve any stiffness you are experiencing. Here’s how to do the knee-to-chest stretch:

  1. Lay down on a soft mat, and bend your knees while keeping your feet flat onto the ground.
  2. Using both of your hands, either interlace your fingers around the knee joint or under your knee cap.
  3. Keeping the other foot flat on the floor, move the knee that your hands are encasing, closer to your stomach, meaning inwards.
  4. Very slowly and gently, bring that knee to your chest and back down. While doing so, you can also keep the other foot flat on the floor, however is easier for you.
  5. Now shift your hands to the other knee, and repeat steps 1-4.
  6. Repeat this exercise 2-4 times for each leg.

3.) The Piriformis Stretch

As the name suggests, this stretch is done to relax and stimulate your piriformis muscle, found deep in your hips. Stretching this will have a significant impact on your lower body pains and underlying tensions. If you are someone who works from home and sits for long periods throughout your day, this stretch will help keep your lower back loose. The steps to the piriformis stretch are as follows:

  1. Lay down on the mat with your frontal body facing upwards and knees bent, feet flat on the mat (just like knee-to-chest stretch).
  2. Put your right ankle on the base of your left leg’s knee joint.
  3. Interlace your fingers under your left leg’s kneecap and lift it upwards slowly.
  4. Lift gently towards your chest until you feel some pressure.
  5. Hold this pose for 30 seconds and let go when you start getting tired. Repeat with the other leg.

4.) The Sphinx Stretch

Contrary to the other stretches we’ve recommended, this one is not done with your back resting against the ground. Instead, your eyes will be facing the ground and your back will face the ceiling. It’s a backward bending stretch that lengthens your back while also giving it room for recovery. To do this you must:

  1. Lie on the mat face down with your stomach and frontal body on the mat.
  2. Now perch yourself up by using your elbows as a stand for your upper body.
  3. Layout your hands flat on the ground while doing step 2, so that your arms are now at a 90-degree angle.
  4. Widen your stance and distance your feet in case of any unease.
  5. Now gently lift your head and upper body by stretching out your elbows upwards from their previous position on the ground.
  6. Lift as much as you can, and hold that position for 15-20 seconds. Make sure to stretch your lower back as much as you can.
  7. Relax back down with your elbows resting on the ground. Repeat.

Final Notes

Stretching is an effective tool that you can use at home on your own time to decrease the back pain that you are experiencing. Of course, make sure to consult your doctor before starting any of these exercises if you are experiencing severe pain already. Each person, and their bodies, are different. Do things that are within your comfort level to ensure that practice these stretches properly.

Take advantage of the time that you have at home. Stretching is free. You can perform these stretches first thing in the morning before you start your workday. If it helps, consider waking up 15 minutes earlier to fit these stretches into your routine. Ideally, you can perform them before work emails and text messages begin flooding your day.

Over the course of the last 18 months, lot’s of people have used the slower pace of life to their advantage by finding out where their passions truly are and for Michelle Davidson, she turned that passion in to her pay check.

Here, we delve behind the brand, One of a Kind Designs, and get to the heart of what makes Michelle the force to be reckoned with that she is today…

Tell us about the journey that lead you to launching your brand, One of a Kind Designs

I think everyone would agree that the last 18 months have been a little bit odd to say the least, and like many of your readers who are ‘solopreneurs’, I started painting furniture as a hobby. In fact, it all started with a beautiful Victorian wooden chair that I had acquired, with lofty plans for a grand transformation. A chair became a chest of drawers, a writing bureau, a drinks cabinet and, frankly, anything else I could get my hands on!

I never dreamt that one year later I would be selling my furniture on my own website, having attended the first ever UK Furniture Painters Business Academy Conference or have my story published in an international lifestyle magazine! It’s been a whirlwind of a year.

Not long after picking up my first paintbrush, I knew that I had found my passion! I discovered my love for creating unique designs with vintage furniture and around the same time I also realised that I was not alone in my passion. I started to get lots of interest on my personal social media pages when sharing my transformations and I thought that there may be an opportunity to work on other people’s household projects.

It quickly grew into more than that as people have come to me looking for inspiration, or for me to help them realise their own vision. From then on, it seemed that there was a market for creating bespoke vintage furniture.

Before long I was considering the real impact of my work. I was rescuing beautiful furniture that was often destined for landfill and turning it into something that would be loved and treasured for many more years. This was eye-opening for me.

My mission now is to provide an alternative to mass-produced, fast-furniture, which is often made up of poor quality materials making it just another aspect of our wasteful, ‘throwaway’ culture, and if I can inspire others to do something similar, I will have achieved something wonderful.

How did you discover your passion for creating bespoke furniture?

By accident actually. I was looking for a new creative outlet. Over the years I had tried tapestry, dress making, candle making and as much as I still love to do all those creative hobbies, once I picked up a paintbrush and saw the effect that I could have on an old piece of furniture, I was sold!

I love taking an often unwanted piece of quality vintage furniture and transforming it into a statement piece for the modern home. These pieces are full of history and character. What I do doesn’t take away from that, I am conscious of the nature of the piece and whether it is a restoration project or I paint and decorate it, my goal is for the piece to be loved and used for many more years, rather than it being left to ruin.

How do you want people to feel once they purchase your furniture?

It’s actually remarkable how emotive a wonderful piece of furniture can be. I have had customers tell me that opening up the packaging and taking off protective bubble wrap to get to their piece reminds them of childhood Christmas mornings. You can’t quantify that emotion or put a price on it, the excitement is unique to every individual, to see their vision realised and the feelings that it creates is something very special.

I want people to be impressed and love the piece as much as I have loved creating it. I want them to feel proud of their decision to choose a sustainable way to furnish their home, recognising the positive impact that decision has had.

I have met so many people who never knew that painting furniture was even an option. This has opened their eyes to being able to get a creatively bespoke piece of furniture to their exact specifications, you can’t get that on the high street.

I pride myself on working closely with clients, listening to what they require and using my professionalism and creativity to exceed their expectations. I love seeing the excited expressions on their face when we are discussing colours and designs, then the happiness when they receive their piece delivered direct to their home.

Looking back since launching the brand, is there anything you would do differently?

No, everything has happened exactly as it should have. I’ve made mistakes and learned from them. I have learned that I need to trust in myself, my ability and the processes I go through. I am a big advocate of just putting one foot in front of the other, it doesn’t matter how small those steps are, if they are a positive action, they will get you to where you need to go.

Tell us more about your interior style at home…

It’s a work in progress! We moved into our family home 8 years ago and everything needed refreshing. I was pregnant with our twins at the time, so we kept a simple design at first, cream walls and cream carpets throughout. Now we are taking it room by room, injecting our personality into our home. Last year we completely renovated our kitchen, it now fits what our family needs – a large cooking area, dining area and comfortable seating area for those infrequent quiet moments! It goes without saying that my business has infected the whole household and my twins have their own pieces, painted by their own hands in their bedrooms, I wouldn’t say they are immaculate finishes but they are certainly unique and loved by my two crazies!

If you to describe your brand in three words, what would they be?

Wow, can I use nine words please:

Unique, sustainable, creative, personable, friendly, inspiring, passionate, transparent and quality.

What advice would you offer to anyone wanting to launch a business?

Focus on a few things at a time, don’t stretch yourself too much or you will get overwhelmed. The first year is tough, but if you do it right by working smarter, not harder, the rewards are exhilarating. Trust your instincts, ask for support and be open and honest. People need to know and trust you so don’t be afraid to be yourself.

How would you describe your personal style?

I’m not an extrovert, my style suits my mood and my diary, I love to dress up all glam and head out on date night, but I also love my ‘slouchies’. Most of my casual wear is paint splattered and I’m okay with that, it’s who I am now.

Talk us through an average day in your life…

I have 7 year old twins, Murray and Isla, 4 cats and a dog, a 20 year bank career and a new business. Life is busy. Each day I try to build in self care, it’s so important. If I don’t function well, everything else suffers. I feel more focused and in control if I can meditate first thing in the morning. I also enjoy getting up early to walk the dog before everyone else is about. I have the most amazingly supportive husband, we definitely share the house work and childcare. I work for a bank during the day and the evening and weekends are my One of a Kinds Designs time.

How much has social media played a role in the success of your brand?

It’s massive. Social media has opened up my business to groups of people I could never have dreamt of reaching without it. It gives small businesses like mine a platform from which to shout about our business, showcase what we can offer, reach and engage with customers and build relationships.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Great question! I love to travel and I have a few favourite places that I would love to visit again including Lake Garda in Italy, South of France and Croatia. I went on my honeymoon to Egypt and my husband still teases me that I didn’t go into the Great Pyramid at Giza so that could make it on the list. I’m not really a sun worshipper so one destination that I would love to visit is Scandinavia and Russia. The scenery, culture and architecture would be amazing.

What is your go-to quote when lacking motivation?

Practice makes progress, this is a big motivator in our house. It’s about continuing to put one foot in front of the other. My husband always says ‘A march of a thousand miles begins with the first step’, I like that.

What’s next for you and the brand?

To share my passion for refinishing furniture. I want to teach others. I run online courses and workshops and I offer 121 programmes as well.

What does self care mean to you?

Looking after yourself by doing what you need to do when you need to do it. It’s about being attuned to your body and mind so that you recognise when you need to take action for yourself. For me this can mean a walk, meditation, yoga, or spending time with my husband and family.

Where can people find out more?

If you head to my website www.oneofakinddesigns.co.uk you will see my furniture collection. There is also information there on the training courses and workshops I offer.

I am also on Instagram and I have a Facebook page and two groups which you can join to learn more about what I do or to learn to paint furniture yourself.

We’ve been sharing the love for York at House of Coco recently; it’s one of our favourite UK locations and it’s easy to see why. With its quaint cobbled streets, delicious grub and fantastic shopping if you’re a fan of vintage jewellery (and who isn’t…) it’s a gorgeous getaway.

For a five star stay in the city, head to The Grand. Built in 1906, the hotel is steeped in heritage, with sweeping stone staircases, original wood panelling, parquet flooring and acres of marble. The original wing houses rooms for imposting Edwardian design, with high ceilings, huge windows and quirky architectural details. A new wing, opened in 2018, features spacious rooms and suites alongside The Grand’s Cookery School, a state of the art space offering courses for novice cooks to aspiring chefs under the expert guidance of chef tutors.

We checked in to an Executive Room, abundantly spacious with floor to ceiling windows and a huge desk, perfect for the working traveller. Every room features a king size bed, Egyptian linens and a bathroom complete with marble topped bath, walk in shower and Molton Brown toiletries. We loved the little touches left to welcome guests; a tin of chocolate buttons, a walking map of York, and a ‘hygiene kit’ left on the pillow with face mask and hand sanitiser were welcome additions that made us feel at home.

Downstairs guests will find The Grand’s elegant bar, The 1906, an intimate space that feels like a cosy train carriage with an extensive cocktail menu, an unrivalled collection of spirits and whiskeys and some of Yorkshire’s finest ales. Drop in for an aperitif before heading across the hall to The Rise, the hotel’s restaurant and terrace offering modern British cuisine with locally sourced ingredients. With interiors inspired by York’s local heritage, it’s a beautiful space and while we can’t vouch for dinner, the afternoon tea was exceptional. Pillowy soft sandwiches, fresh warm scones and an array of indulgent cakes and sweets, it’s definitely one to book.

Downstairs guests will find the spa with pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room along with a state of the art gym and a menu of treatments. The Grand has also introduced a range of indulgent short break packages, from the Alfresco Unbind with its Picnic in the Park hamper to the Gourmet getaway and the Spa & Stay package or a break encompassing a turn at The Grand’s cookery school, there’s something for everyone.

With such a comfortable and spacious room, delicious food and drink options and its location mere minutes from the station and the city centre, The Grand might just be one of our favourite York visits yet.

From £169 Room Only or £209 Bed and Breakfast (based on two sharing).
