Unassuming and charismatic as always, the ever-charming Kiefer Sutherland made a very welcome return to the 02 Academy in Bournemouth this week. After he was forced to cancel his gig last year after contracting Covid.

Kiefer and his fantastic band were on fine form as they played out to a transfixed audience who enjoyed a jam-packed set full of songs not only from his most recent album ‘Bloor Street’ which was released last year but also tracks from his previous albums 2019’s ‘Reckless & Me’ and 2016’s ‘Down in a Hole’.

Kiefer Sutherland

A Review of ‘Bloor Street’ Performance

He kicked off proceedings with the Springsteen-esque ‘Ole’ Lonely Life’ and unleashed a full-throttle performance complete with an oversized cowboy hat. His guitar playing is impressive and he and his band navigated their way through a first-class set of engaging material which also included two covers of tracks by the late, great Tom Petty.

Kiefer’s sound is very much steeped in classic Americana, but you can also hear touches of country, bluegrass and soul in there too. As a performer, he’s incredibly engaging and endearing, offering up charming anecdotes behind his songs. In particular, he provides a delightful insight into the story behind the track and also the name of this most recent album  ‘Bloor Street’.

Kiefer Sutherland Takes Fans Down ‘Bloor Street’ Memory Lane: A Captivating Americana Performance

He explained that it’s named after one of the main roads in Toronto Canada which is a main road in Toronto where he grew up and how this road was the location of many ‘firsts’ for him – first job, first kiss, first fight and so on. Kiefer’s boundless enthusiasm and energy are really endearing, but his musicality and showmanship are also equally matched to his passion.

From tracks like ‘So Full Of Love’, ‘Chasing The Rain’, ‘Reckless & Me’ and more, Kiefer has a real expansive Americana sound, Kiefer gives plenty of heart in his performance and his gravelly vocals and warm rich tone suit this genre very well.

Kiefer Sutherland’s Convincing Musical Journey

Kiefer has always been into music from an early age, but, arguably, he is better known for his acting and in particular his roles in hit TV shows 24 such as the beleaguered Federal Agent Jack Bauer and the unexpected President Tom Kirkman who was the ‘Designated Survivor’.

This was a convincing and compelling performance from the actor-singer who effortlessly commanded the stage with his candidly confessional quips as well as his musicality and showmanship.

It’s clear that singing and performing are of the utmost importance to him and as Kiefer rightly says ‘Life is too short not to do something you love and we couldn’t agree more!
