Do you own a business? Are you trying to shake things up as of late and find a way to motivate your employees to work harder and give more in their jobs? It’s not an easy ask, especially if you don’t have something to offer in exchange. Wage increases may be out of the picture right now, so how do you motivate your employees? This is exactly why an employee appreciation program can be so useful. These are a great way to acknowledge the hard work, dedication and passion that people bring to their job.

If you’re convinced an employee appreciation program is exactly what the company needs, here are some tips for setting it up.

The Rules and Goals Need to Be Clear to All

Because the program is meant as an incentive, the rules and goals need to be communicated. Employees need to understand what’s required of them to get acknowledged and reach a reward. You may choose to offer different tiers, with bigger and better rewards the higher each employee climbs.

Another thing to consider is who will run the program, keeping track of rewards and exceptional work. Often, this will fall under the human resources department, with department leads and managers being able to suggest which employees should be recognized.

The Program Should Be Consistent and Fair

Speaking of the rules, the appreciation program must be kept consistent and fair, with the same rules applied across the board. Employees shouldn’t feel a particular person or department has the upper hand, and therefore they don’t have a fair shot themselves.

How Often Will Rewards Be Given – How Will They Be Announced?

Then there is the question of how often you’ll be giving out rewards and how the rewards will be announced. Will this be an as-needed program wherein rewards are given any time they meet a certain qualification, or are you thinking more along the terms of a monthly or bi-monthly reward system? How and who will announce the employees being rewarded? Again, this may fall under the human resources department, supervisors or department heads.

Make Sure the Rewards Are Something Employees Will Want

For the program to be successful, you need to be sure that the rewards you offer employees are something they want. It needs to act as motivation so that they provide the kind of level of customer service or work that will be recognized, and what better way than with tangible items rewards?

Gift cards tend to be very popular, as they appeal to a wide audience. You can treat your employees with Target gift cards since it’s the kind of store that offers everything from clothing to housewares, to toys and even groceries. Employees get control over what their reward is. Gift cards can be rewarded in different denominations based on performance and the reward tier they are at.

Finding an effective way to incentivize workers to give their all and do their best means you’ll see an increased level of productivity, customer service and potentially employee satisfaction. Creating an employee appreciation program could be the smartest business move of 2023.
