One of the go-to activities on your winter trip has to be Budapest’s Christmas markets. One of the most traditional markets is located at Vörösmarty Square. Immerse in a winter wonderland below thousands of fairy lights with 100 market stalls to choose from. Serving traditional chimney cakes, mulled wine and sült kolbász (Local sausages). It’s not all about the drink and food, take your loved ones a Christmas gift or treat yourself to a sentimental memory. Another Christmas market to check out is Basilica Christmas Market – the biggest and best Budpaest has to offer. Sitting in front of St Stephen’s Basilica, take in the spectacular architecture of the city while enjoying festive fun.

Celebrate Santa Claus Day

This unique experience is one that you will remember for a lifetime. A Hungarian Christmas tradition, on 6th December St Nicholas comes to town. On this day in Budapest, children shine their boots and place them on the windowsill, waiting for Sata to leave candles and toys. Join in and experience authentic culture, watch the spectacular parade across the city or even join the Santa Speedo Run to raise money for local Budapest charities.

Ride A Festive Tram

This isn’t just any ordinary tram, this is a magical festive Budapest tram. From late November until early January, Budapest trams are decorated with beautiful fairy lights in celebration of the festive period. Passing by the iconic Parliament building, the tram follows the road to the Danube, offering the most scenic views of the city.

Ice Skating In City Park

Budapest boasts Europe’s largest outdoor ice skating rink. Situated steps from the monumental Heroes’ Square in the shadow of the 19th century Vajdahunyad Castle. The rink is open daily, but closes during the day for maintenance. Ice skating in the evening is truly magical, as the sunsets, the castle begins to light up in the dark, creating a beautiful setting.

Take A Winters Dip In The Thermal Baths

Dating back centuries, Budapest is renowned for its thermal spas. Sitting on a patchwork of hot springs that spit mineral-rich waters into many of its famous thermal baths. A must-visit is Europe’s biggest spa complex, Széchenyi Baths. Although the temperature will be cold outside during the Winter, the thermal outdoor pool will keep you warm and cosy. Széchenyi boasts 21 pools, including indoor, outdoor and spa amenities. As well as its sparty which combines a tranquil spa with a party at night.
