What inspired you to create Rocking Gypsy, and how did your passion for the ocean, moon, and stars shape the brand’s identity?

During my trip to Tulum, Mexico in 2017, I struggled to find beautiful, affordable, and sustainable beachwear. Recognizing the gap in the market, the idea for Rocking Gypsy was born. Crafting a business plan and vision, the concept crystallized in early 2022 when I connected with Monica and Manish of April Sourcing, India, RG’s co-founders.

As someone deeply connected to the universe and the ocean, merging our passion for fashion with the cosmic elements of the moon and stars felt natural. We even consulted an astrologer, casting a horary chart to determine the perfect time for our launch. According to the cosmos, the Spring Equinox of 2023 aligned perfectly with our vision, symbolizing a time of rebirth and renewal for Mother Earth.

Following the universe’s guidance, we revealed Rocking Gypsy to the world on this auspicious day.

Can you share a specific moment or experience that motivated you to spread love, joy, and kindness through fashion?

Having worked in fashion for years, I witnessed its loss of soul, becoming solely profit-driven. I wanted to infuse meaning back into fashion, making it more than just material possessions. Fashion, for me, is personal and tied to emotions.

Feeling joyful and confident inspires kindness and positivity. In a world craving more Joy, Love, and Kindness, I felt compelled to create designs that inspire these emotions.

Rocking Gypsy embraces a blend of Southern California’s free-spirited essence and London’s edge. How do these diverse influences manifest in your designs?

Living in Los Angeles as a Londoner, merging these identities in our designs felt natural. Our silhouettes reflect a So-Cal bohemian vibe with free-flowing, loose-fitting styles. We infuse a touch of London Grit through details like metal studs, beads, chains, and raw edges, creating a harmonious blend of both worlds.

Sustainability is a core value for Rocking Gypsy. How do you ensure that your limited runs and small batch production contribute positively to the fashion industry and the environment?

Our partnerships in India ensure ethical sourcing and eco-friendly production. We prioritise meaning over mass production, designing timeless pieces that transcend trends. By producing in small batches and producing to order, we limit our carbon footprint, avoiding excess stock that contributes to fashion waste.

The use of natural fabrics and unique dye effects is a distinctive feature of your brand. How do these choices align with your vision for environmentally conscious fashion?

We primarily use natural fibers like cotton and silk, complemented by non-toxic, AZO dye-free, and phthalate-free dye processes. Each garment is dyed by hand, ensuring uniqueness while minimizing environmental impact.

Artisanal embroideries and beading techniques are evident in your designs. Can you tell us about the creative process behind incorporating these intricate details into your garments?

We draw inspiration from heritage techniques, incorporating them to add a unique touch and preserve these artisanal crafts. Whether inspired by a vintage garment or a random detail, these elements enrich our designs, making each piece one-of-a-kind.

Rocking Gypsy encourages people to “Follow your Rebel Heart” and “Love your Bohemian Spirit.” How do these philosophies reflect the mindset you hope to inspire in your customers?

“Follow your Rebel Heart” encourages embracing individuality and freedom, while “Love your Bohemian Spirit” celebrates carefree, artistic vibes. We want our customers to feel empowered, expressing their uniqueness unapologetically and embracing their inner goddess.

Embracing a global soul is a beautiful concept. How does Rocking Gypsy celebrate cultural diversity and inclusivity in its designs and messaging?

We celebrate diversity by featuring real people of various backgrounds, sizes, and colors in our campaigns. Our designs blend colors, patterns, and textures inspired by global traditions, allowing wearers to connect with their global soul. We believe in beauty defined by kindness and authenticity, not skin colour or size.

Fashion often serves as a medium for self-expression. How do you believe Rocking Gypsy empowers individuals to express their unique identities through your clothing?

At Rocking Gypsy, we view fashion as an extension of one’s personality, not a one-size-fits-all concept. Our designs embody rebellion and free spirit, allowing customers to express their individuality confidently. Wearing Rocking Gypsy isn’t just about clothing; it’s about embodying a mindset, feeling like the rockstars they are.

Giving back is an integral part of Rocking Gypsy’s mission. Can you share some of the initiatives or charities the brand supports and the impact they have had?

What advice would you give to aspiring designers who aim to create a fashion brand with a strong social and environmental conscience, based on your own journey with Rocking Gypsy?

Building a socially and environmentally conscious brand is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay true to your convictions, challenge norms, and innovate for a sustainable future. The creative process is often deeply personal. Can you share a challenging moment you faced during the creation of Rocking Gypsy and how you overcame it?

One significant challenge was a shipment delay during our launch. Despite the setback, we decided to be transparent with our customers, announcing the delay but still allowing orders. It was nerve-wracking, but honesty prevailed, and we overcame the challenge.

Our mission is to inspire a mindset shift, encouraging authenticity, sustainability, and individuality. We aim to influence not just our customers but the entire industry, paving the way for a conscious and compassionate fashion future.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Bali is our dream destination! We’re planning a campaign there for 2024, and we can’t wait to explore its beauty and capture it in our designs.
