Looking sexy shouldn’t be hard work. In fact, part of looking and being sexy is to make it happen effortlessly. A woman who can wear a dress in a chic and confident way will automatically turn an ordinary dress into a sexy dress, regardless of what it looks like!

The rule of too much

Too little fabric and too much skin is the quickest way to make an outfit seem tacky. While there’s nothing wrong with flaunting a bit of skin, showing some leg, too much effort being put into covering as little of your body as possible can make you seem self-conscious and uncomfortable, even if that wasn’t the intention.

If you already have a sexy dress that you love, but it might be seen as “too much” for the occasion, you can easily tone it down by adding less dressy elements, like a blazer, or, depending on the design and length of the dress, you could even wear a pair of jeans under the dress, where the dress would function as a long top. Accessories like a scarf, hat, sunglasses, a watch and jewellery (obviously in combinations that make sense!) are a great way of dressing an outfit up or down.

What is the right occasion for a sexy dress?

The great thing about modern dress code, is that, within reason, basically anything goes. A sexy dress is always a great solution for a dinner date, as it adds a sense of sophistication to the occasion. Rather that choosing something too revealing, go for an elegant (not gaudy), fitted (not squeezed) dress with a hemline that stops below the knee. This lets you show off a bit of leg, without giving the game away. Use details like fringe, sequins, buttons and pattern to create visual interest, rather than relying on baring it all. Add some finishing touches with a neat handbag, a pair of heels and a bit of jewellery for extra confidence.

What is the best cut?

The best cut for the individual is based on their body type, but if you are feeling completely lost, most people can comfortably get away with a short (relative to your build) A-line dress. An A-line is a universally sexy dress, as it is flattering without being clingy, and shows some leg without showing too much.

If you do choose a dress that shows some leg, balance it out with a more conservative top half, to prevent your outfit from looking cheap and trashy. A simple piece of jewellery, like a chain or choker in a metallic colour, is often just what you need to give your top half some get up and go.

Of course, the final word in pulling off a sexy dress, is to dress with confidence. Because sexiness is a state of mind, it helps to wear clothing that you love and feel comfortable in. Don’t let anyone dictate what your style should be, and before long, you’ll feel sexy and confident!
