With the new year comes Hollywood’s awards season. It kicked-off with a glittering bang last weekend with the 77th Golden Globe Awards- thank you for the laughs, Ricky Gervais! – and if you’re anything like me, with that comes the anticipation of who is wearing what and generally, just basking in the fabulousness of it all. But how do the stars get red-carpet ready? From sweat lodges to vitamin injections, #TeamCoco got the scoop on on how they make the most of West Hollywood’s world-famous wellness and shopping experiences, in the heart of Los Angeles.

Sweat it out at the ‘Urban Sweat Lodge’: Join one of West Hollywood’s alternative sweat sessions at the Shape House, offering a sweating experience wrapped in a heated blanket whilst watching Netflix. During the sweat session, the heart receives a workout similar to that of a ten-mile run, resulting in an intense, detoxifying, health-boosting sweat, burning 800-1,600 calories. Individual sweat sessions cost $65.

Revitalise with vitamin injections: Rehab Wellness is a medical wellness centre, offering a variety of healthcare and aesthetics to help guests feel better, look younger and live longer. One of the most popular treatments on offer is the vitamin injection, with shots starting from $24. Benefits include increased energy and metabolism, improved digestion and skin health.

Give your face a workout: Opened inside the 1 Hotel in September, FaceGym has made its way to LA following the opening of six locations in the UK and one in New York City. The concept is for ‘Trainers’ to perform a range of non-invasive workouts for your face and employ the latest cutting-edge technology and high-performance skincare products.

Pause, breathe and unplug: Unplug Meditation, the world’s first drop-in, secular meditation studio, opened its doors in West Hollywood in April 2014. The wide variety of simple and eclectic classes are led by top experts, inspiring visits to pause, breathe and unplug daily, to get calmer, healthier and happier.

Melrose Avenue: Melrose Avenue is one of LA’s most iconic streets, with a wide variety of trendy shops and restaurants. Those looking to stand out can head to Melrose Place, which offers an eye-popping array of designer stores, including Isabel Marant and Marc Jacobs, as well as carefully curated boutiques.

Rapidly cementing its status as a top destination for foodie travellers, Santa Barbara’s culinary scene has never been better. Situated just two hours north of Los Angeles, California, the region holds all the raw ingredients for great wining, dining and culture – from year-round produce and sustainable seafood to world-class vineyards, not to mention a blossoming art scene to boot. Here’s why you should visit in 2020…

Devour world-class food in fabulous surroundings

In recent years, a flurry of new chefs have arrived in Santa Barbara who are applying a high level of skill to the abundant local produce. Forget stuffy white table cloths and smart dress codes, this city is all about laidback luxury. Serving up some of California’s most innovative dining experiences, a number of recently opened restaurants have been wowing locals and visitors alike. Try Bibi-Ji, Santa Barbara’s first contemporary Indian, serving playful spins on classics with a menu that highlights the local seafood served ‘sea-to-table’, Tyger Tyger, a dynamic 1,900-square-foot marketplace featuring ‘fast-fine’ Southeast Asian cuisine, or Loquita, a lively Spanish-style restaurant in the Funk Zone.

There’s a brand new culinary festival

Santa Barbara is on the cusp of launching a city-wide extravaganza, the Santa Barbara Culinary Experience, presented in partnership with the Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts. The event, taking place 13-15 March 2020, is a new annual festival celebrating the bounty of what is grown in and around Santa Barbara, including a tasting event showcasing the best of Santa Barbara’s food and drink, hands-on cooking classes, food trend talks, and more. A new map of Julia Child’s favourite Santa Barbara haunts, specially created for release during the Santa Barbara Culinary Experience, will enable visitors to follow in the famous chef’s footsteps any time of year.

…And a burgeoning art scene

In addition to a growing creative scene, which is evident throughout Santa Barbara’s creative Funk Zone, Santa Barbara Museum of Art will reveal a newly expanded, multi-floor wing in spring 2020, housing photography, Asian art and other exciting exhibits. To open the new wing, the museum will host an exhibit on Vincent van Gogh and his influences, “Through Vincent’s Eyes,” in October 2020. By presenting around 15 works of art by Van Gogh alongside more than 125 works of art selected to reflect the surprisingly varied art that he most admired, the landmark exhibition makes Santa Barbara one to watch on the art circuit.

It’s an Instagrammer’s dream

The first thing you’ll notice when you arrive in Santa Barbara is how pretty it is. Spanish colonial style architecture, pristine streets lined with shops, restaurants, wineries and boutiques, a gorgeous harbour and miles of sandy beaches make it a picture-perfect holiday destination. Delve a bit deeper and you’ll find that the interiors really live up to the city’s shiny exterior. Instagram’s great and good stay at the Martyn Lawrence Bullard-designed Hotel Californian, where Spanish colonial revival architecture and a modern Moorish vibe combine, creating a design infusion begging to be photographed.

It’s the perfect spot to rosé (or pinot) all day

Celebrating its 15th anniversary, the cult-classic film Sideways brought worldwide fame for Santa Barbara wine country. Wine consumption increased in general while the demand for elegant, and highly quaffable, pinot noir shot up. The Oscar-winning movie was filmed almost entirely on-location throughout Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara County. Nowadays, you don’t need to trawl from vineyard to vineyard to get your hands on some of the destination’s celebrated bottles. Santa Barbara’s Urban Wine Trail offers both novices and aficionados the opportunity to learn about and taste the wines of many different varieties and styles crafted by the County’s best winemakers. 30 wineries across the California city now make up the trail and can be explored by foot, bike or taxi.

Relax in the lap of luxury

Accommodation in Santa Barbara comes in many shapes and sizes. Curl up in a hillside hideaway like the iconic Belmond El Encanto, immerse yourself right in the action at Harbor View Inn’s brand new downtown wing or relax in the lap of luxury at Rosewood Miramar Beach Montecito, which opened just last year. On a budget? No bother. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, lies El Capitan Canyon, a resort boasting fully furnished cedar-lined cabins with vaulted ceilings and French doors opening onto El Capitan Beach and offering incredible ocean views.

Live the true California beach life

After soaking the city’s food and culture, it’s time to hit the beach. With miles of sun-drenched and sandy coastline, there’s a spot to suit every type of traveller, from surf-seekers to families. Dog lovers should head to Arroyo Burro Beach, better known to locals as Hendry’s Beach, where pooches revel on the dog-friendly flat sands. If surfing is your bag, Leadbetter Beach is best for catching waves, while sophisticates will enjoy the pristine sands of Butterfly Beach, where cocktails can be taken at the nearby Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara. Heading closer to town, family-friendly East Beach is located next to Stearns Wharf, with lifeguard stations, a playground and cafés.

Ahead of World Mental Health Day on 10 October, #TeamCoco speaks with World Meditation Day founder and author of The Effortless Mind, Will Williams to find out more about this new next-generation app – Beeja and why he’s offering free lifetime access to it, in response to the growing mental health epidemic.

10th October 2019 is World Mental Health Day. Beeja Meditation will be recognising the importance of this event, on the day by offering completely free lifetime access to its Beeja App. This year the focus for World Mental Health Day is suicide prevention – a complex issue which has been identified by the World Health Organisation as being ‘the second leading cause of death among 15-29 year-olds’. Inspired by his own journey, Williams hopes to democratise the world of mediation by offering people the tool to do it themselves through his new life-changing app.

An ex-industry man, formerly crippled by insomnia, it wasn’t until he embarked on his own meditation journey – an 11-year meditative quest around the world – that he was finally able to conquer the ailment and consequently, find his calling; and has since, fully dedicated his life to teaching others about meditation. He has successfully taken his hybrid method to companies such as HSBC, Deepmind and Google as well as creating the Beeja community through the retreats and courses that have improved their quality of life and become meditation advocates. By sharing his simple everyday tools, Will is on a mission to create a happier, healthier world.

A natural next step, the Beeja app will help broaden his reach and expedite his mission. One which, unlike its competitors, doesn’t create a tech-reliance, yet encourages users to become self-sufficient meditators within 30 days and also helps its community better understand their emotions and boosts an overall sense of well-being, focus, creativity and dynamism.

#TeamCoco spoke with Will and got the low-down on the new pioneering app and dove deeper into his fascinating wellness journey.

What led you to embark on your wellness journey?
I had chronic insomnia for 7 years and it was so incredibly debilitating. I’m a very solution-oriented guy so I tried loads of different solutions but nothing worked. By chance, I met a friend of a friend on a night out and they waxed lyrical about how good this meditation was, and hey presto, the insomnia was gone in two weeks!

Can you tell us more about Beeja meditation and the practice of it?
The teacher gives each individual a personalised sound, or mantra, that resonates with their brain and helps it go into a highly coherent alpha state (associated with peak performance) and it also has a very pacifying effect on the wider nervous system so that your mind and body can recharge and reboot in the most powerful way possible. When you do this for 20 minutes, you feel calmer, clearer, and better able to engage with life. When you do this consistently, it enables you to become the person you’ve always wanted to be.

You travelled the world learning different teachings and methods but why do you think mantra meditation worked so well for you and how did you adapt it to suit the anxieties facing your clientele today?
The fact that it’s personalised means that instead of a one size fits all approach, which only works for a few, this works for everybody. It’s the most brilliant technique, stemming back 10,000 years, and didn’t need too much adding to it, but there were a couple of gaps that needed filling to make it the perfect fit for modern living, and so that’s what my team and I teach, and it’s having legendary results!

You’re offering free lifetime access to your app in honour of the very important World Mental Health Day that’s coming up – can you tell us more?

Mental health problems can affect anyone, at any time of year, and we feel that the 10th October is a poignant day for us to show our support. Beeja is on a mission to democratise meditation and to make it feel relevant and accessible to all, empowering people to overcome their stress, expand their horizons, and live their full potential. We hope that free life-time access to our app goes some way in helping achieve these goals and supporting those who might need it most. Not only is Beeja Meditation incredibly effective, the ease of learning and practising the technique is what makes it stand out – making it ideal for those experiencing depression. It is also commonly found to deliver the quickest results.

What can first-time visitors to your meditation space expect? Talk us through the process/teachings?
On day 1, we see people for a one-hour personal appointment and get them rolling with the meditation. By the end of the session, they will have had one of the most profound experiences of their lives. The next two days, we see people for 3 hours at a time, and that’s where we teach people how to be able to generate that level of experience for themselves. They can also expect a warm welcome, a good laugh and a cup of tea!

Tell us about your new app and how it differs from others in the marketplace today?
At a high level, the main distinction with the Beeja Meditation app is that it’s teaching you how to become a self-reliant meditator so that you don’t need to be dependent on the very device which is causing you so much stress! At a practical level, the way we teach meditation is easier to practice than anything else out there.

What are your top tips for those who have never meditated but would like to start practicing?
I’ve put all my years of experience into developing our course and app program, and nothing can substitute for that level of interaction, so download the app and give it a whirl, or if you want an expert to help you shortcut everything and become expert in 48 hours, then come along to one of courses and you’ll never look back!

The Beeja App has been carefully crafted to make meditation fun and accessible and to appeal to the Gen Z and millennial market for whom ‘conscious deceleration’ is a primary objective. Also in contrast to existing meditation apps, the Beeja App offers a hybrid method of meditation. It is based on core Vedic principles but supported by the wisdom of ancient teachings, which Will has incorporated from years of experience.

For more information please visit the Beeja App website. The app is free to download, for both iPhone and Android, with in-app subscription options, which range from £3.50 per month or alternatively a one-off lifetime payment of £108.

For a growing number of travellers, volunteering in a remote corner of the world is the trip of a lifetime. It can be an excellent way for individuals to learn about a different culture and explore a country while helping those in need. Much of the rise in voluntourism has come from trips that emphasize social work, many run by relatively young organisations but it’s important that those looking to get involved, make sure that they choose the right organisation with many commercial tour operators have moved into the space, acknowledging its money-making potential.

With this in mind, #TeamCoco has spent time looking into some of the best options out there, including award-winning programs that really make a difference and are recognised for using short-term volunteers to assist in long-term gain.

Global Vision International UK has been offering award-winning volunteer and intern programs abroad since 1994. They not only offer life-changing experiences but they are also designed to help participants increase employability. Other than developing covetable skills such as cross-cultural communication and leadership, many of the programs also carry internationally recognised qualifications certified by academic partners. The programs on offer are wide-reaching and range from marine and wildlife conservation to teaching and female empowerment in local communities around the world.

Planeterra Foundation was established in 2003 and is a non-profit organisation that has contributed millions of dollars towards projects in areas of social enterprise, healthcare, conservation and emergency response. The organisation gives short-term volunteers the opportunity to work with long-term volunteers to help towards long-term change in some of the most under-developed regions in the world or places that have been torn apart by natural disasters or war. Not only that, they work with small communities across projects that promote female empowerment by providing life-changing access to education and job-training; forge new paths for youths in many parts of the world that don’t have access to formal education and have few opportunities for jobs, helping them to develop skills to work in tourism and hospitality; and environmental protection helping to mitigate the negative impacts of tourism on the natural environment through their Ocean Health Fund and supporting social enterprises that give back to the environment. Croatia continues to inspire wanderlust the world over. Its pristine beaches and jewel-like water with more than 1,000 idyllic islands to see and explore, it has remained one of Europe’s hottest tourist spots.

Located on the Istrian Peninsula of Croatia, Rovinj has remained relatively under-the-radar in comparison to other renowned destinations like Dubrovnik and Hvar, meaning it has retained much of its charm and offers an authentic Croatian getaway. The old town is mostly Venetian and built with stunning pale limestone that glows iridescent in the sun.

One of its newest additions – and will no doubt encourage more visitors to the region – is The Melegran, an independent hotel and former townhouse that has been lovingly transformed into a boutique-style hotel in the heart of the old town. They just launched their new rooms featuring a bombastic colour palette with plenty of modern comforts and luxury gadgets like Krups coffee machines and Marshall speakers.

The hotel has been a labour of love for its Croatian/Australian owners – they were married in Rovinj and generations of family have lived and continue to live there. Avid travellers and admirers of authentic, stylish experiences whilst abroad, this fusion of internationalism and local family heritage affords The Melegran’s guests the very best ‘insider-access’ to the town and its surroundings. Notably, it offers an eclectic mix of room categories, making it the perfect choice for couples and families alike. For example, the hotel’s new Duplex Suite, Studio and popular Combo Suite.

Tucked down a quiet cobblestone lane, it’s perfectly situated for guests to experience the special atmosphere of Rovinj’s historical town but also offers some respite for those looking for a quiet nights sleep. It also sits a stone’s throw away from the bustling port, markets, cafés and restaurants of this Italian inspired town, and some of the region’s most popular sites such as the coastal town of Porec, the UNESCO-listed 6th- century EuphrasiusBasilica, and the medieval hill-towns of Motovun and Groznjan are also nearby.

Transport links are close by: it’s less than 10 minutes on foot to the bus station or ferry terminal for boats to Venice.

For now, Rovinj with its crystal blue waters and luscious pine forests, remains an undiscovered gem in the Adriatic. Its hidden cliff-top bars, secret coves and charming architecture await, and the Melegran’s doors are wide open and #TeamCoco can’t wait to explore.

Standard room rates start from €90 per night. For more information, please visit www.melegran.com.

Nikki and Leah are the fearless entrepreneurs and founders of bespoke, organic tampon subscription service, OHNE. Both under 30. Both organic converts, the two young women are going up against mainstream brands to drive much-needed change in the period industry helping to re-shape the way women shop for their period products.

The pioneering service not only allows you to choose your tampon size and amend delivery dates to suit your cycle, but they’re also working with The School Club Zambia to help underprivileged women to overcome period poverty. To date, they have helped more than 600 girls in their menstrual education and improved access to continued schooling.

#TeamCoco chatted with the female founders helping to champion healthy periods and giving young women around the world the knowledge they need to have complete autonomy over their menstrual health.

Nikki and Leah – what is your background and what inspired you to launch OHNE?

We honestly never imagined we’d go into business together but now we can’t imagine doing anything else. Leah previously founded and ran her own small business and Nikki has worked with NGO’s in Asia and Africa – both experiences have contributed hugely to the way we run OHNE and the vision we had for it before we started, but honestly, it’s been a totally new experience for us.

We’re both really inspired by the change that’s happening across many industries towards being more sustainable. We knew that organic tampons were a ‘thing’ but we just found them so hard to access and we didn’t really feel represented by any of the brands that we could find. When we first started to come up with the idea for OHNE – mostly in between rants about the mainstream period product industry and their apparent obsession with pink and purple swirly designs – we realized that despite the huge amounts of progress when it comes to tech and consumer-focused businesses, there was still a huge gap in the market when it came to businesses catering to women’s health, especially their reproductive and menstrual health. We thought it was about time that someone offered a completely bespoke solution to periods; one which catered to real women’s needs.

Was it difficult to do – how did you get the business off the ground?

We started working on OHNE about a year before we launched and spent the majority of that year conceptualising the brand, sourcing our products, and building the website. A huge part of launching OHNE was creating an ethical and socially responsible business so we spent a lot of time working through our supply chain to ensure that women could trust our products. Once this was all ready we had to raise money to launch the company… which took a lot longer than we thought it would! Pitching our tampon company to a room full of male investors definitely had its challenges. However, we found some really amazing, passionate investors at the beginning of this year.

OHNE’s big selling point is that it’s 100% ethically and socially responsible – tell us more about how/the brand’s mission and your incredible efforts to tackle period poverty both here in the UK and beyond?

A huge part of starting OHNE for us was creating an ethical and socially responsible business. For us, the community comes first. We want to create space both online and in real life for women and people with vaginas to talk freely about periods, menstrual cycles, and their bodies without the shame and stigma that is all too often attached to these topics. Periods are not taboo and treating them as though they are leaves a lot of people who have periods in the dark about how their bodies function and perpetuate period poverty because a lack of menstrual health education contributes to people not knowing how to safely manage their periods or missing school due to the stigma and embarrassment. This is a hugely prevalent problem in rural Zambia, which is where our NGO partner, School Club Zambia, works. They identified that one of the biggest reasons behind girls missing – or dropping out entirely – school, as they got older, was that there was no way for them to safely manage their periods. The stigma around bleeding was so big that they couldn’t ask for help and certainly didn’t feel they could risk bleeding through at school. So SCZ established their Girl’s Programme, which is the program OHNE customers support every month. In each school they work with they build new toilet blocks, hold menstrual education workshops (for the boys too, because ending the taboo is everyone’s responsibility) and teach girls how to make their own reusable sanitary pads out of local resources. Not only are these long-term, sustainable solutions to period poverty in these communities, they’re also equipping girls with skills they can use in their later working lives.

Working with SCZ is definitely one of the most rewarding things about what we’re doing – Nikki has first-hand experience working with SCZ and we really trust them to do the absolute best for the communities they’re working in at every stage of the programme.

Have you seen any major changes since you began your involvement with School Club Zambia?

Since the start of the program, more than 600 girls have been supported in their menstrual education and access to continued schooling – which is incredible. When you think about the fact that roughly half of the Zambian population is underage, schooling becomes even more crucial an investment – the risk of hundreds of girls not getting the education they deserve because of their totally natural biology is heartbreaking, not only for them but for the future of their communities.

One of their most jaw-dropping stats comes from one of the schools where they’ve implemented their Girl’s Programme. In 2018, every single girl at the Kariba South school passed her Grade 7 exams; where six years earlier, not a single girl had passed.

We’re really seeing the shift in equality and access to opportunities in rural areas, and we honestly couldn’t be happier to be supporting SCZ however we can. To learn more about what they do with the Girl’s Programme and beyond, check out their website.

What are the risks of using the sanitary products on the market today – what should women be mindful of?

Oof. There are a lot of risks associated with using mainstream tampons that contain chemical additives, are bleached, and made from cotton sprayed with pesticides, from BV to TSS. When you’re putting something in your body that contains harmful chemicals or toxins, you have to be mindful that, while it’s quite possible you never contract anything serious, there is a very real danger associated with the use of these products. Especially if you’re putting them in your vagina, which has the most absorbent, thin, and sensitive skin of anywhere in the body. We’ve got to be really careful about the products we’re getting all up close n’ personal with. We joke that if you wouldn’t put something in your mouth, you shouldn’t put it in your vagina, but we’re actually deadly serious about that. A 100% organic cotton tampon has never once been linked to a case of TSS.

Fortunately, there are a LOT of safe, organic, sustainable alternatives, from tampons to reusable pads and menstrual cups. These are better for your body and better for the environment too – just do your research before you buy and make sure you’re looking out for brands that aren’t just greenwashing (saying their product is organic when it contains only one organic ingredient in a list of ten, for example). OHNE is currently the only period product brand in the UK to be certified by both Soil Association and GOTs, a fact we’re really proud of. It was incredibly important to us to get these certifications as we wanted to be able to be hyper-transparency from the get-go.

You recently expanded to include CBD oils to help alleviate menstrual cramps – what are the benefits of using it instead of traditional paracetamol/ibuprofen?

We love CBD. It’s an all-natural alternative to traditional medications like paracetamol, which is great for those of us who are starting to turn away from synthetic products or who (like us) are just totally obsessed with all things organic!

NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) such as ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen, have huge lists of side-effects which we’re not always willing to risk. Paracetamol is usually not classified as an NSAID because it only has minor anti-inflammatory effects – but this is where CBD can (yet again) shine. CBD can help to reduce inflammation, without any of the associated risks and side effects of NSAIDs or paracetamol and with the added bonus of being totally natural and plant-based.

We’d never shame anyone for the medication they chose to take. You can never really know what another person is experiencing or how their cramps affect them – and I’m sure you’ll catch the OHNE team popping the odd headache pill every now and then too! We just want to educate ourselves and our community a little more about the risks associated with these drugs and the fact that there are natural product alternatives available.

Part of what makes OHNE great is the branding itself – everything from its playful photography and beautiful packaging. Where did you start with this – did you work with an agency or did you always have a vision for it and kept the process in-house?

Thank you! No, we never used an agency for our initial branding concept – for the longest time, we were a two-woman team so we really had to do everything ourselves! We’re mood board pros so we just collected images from all over the internet, brands we liked in other industries, colour palettes we thought evoked the vibe we were going for… We were never trying to hide the fact that we’re a period product brand founded by two young women who don’t have a whole marketing team at our disposal. We didn’t want to look like a mainstream period product brand, so we gave ourselves the freedom to let our passions and the aesthetics we really liked ourselves develop organically. Even our iconic papaya shot is only the result of one of the models messing around at the lunch table and holding it between her legs suggestively – we were like this is genius, and sent her back in front of the camera, papaya in tow!

You recently received investment from Matches Fashion and LoveHoney – congrats! – any future plans to expand into a physical retail space in the near future?

Thanks! We’re so excited to have such amazing investors backing us – it really means a lot to us as a young brand to get these votes of confidence from people whose work we admire so much. We’re more interested in innovating in the online world at the moment; our initial mission was to rethink the way women experience their periods, so we’re very much interested in the many ways you can use technology to shake up an established industry. We’d never rule out anything though, and physical retail spaces can be incredibly creative outlets for community engagement too… so watch this space, I guess!

To those women who are looking to start their own business and perhaps don’t have the courage, what is your advice to them? Any tips to get started?

That if you want to make a name for yourself or shake up change in a specific industry, the most important thing is that you believe in your product/business/idea more than anything, because you’re going to have to fight for it! You face a lot of ups and downs, it takes a thick skin, and a commitment to carry on even when things get a bit tough. That’s not to sound fear-mongering, though, we really believe that any idea that’s got you excited enough to want to make a reality is 100% worth seeing through. And if you’re anything like us, once that idea has wriggled into your brain, nothing we could say would be able to put you off making it happen anyway!

What’s next for OHNE?

So. Much. We’re just hitting that place where we’re able to start really expanding our team, our product range, our community – everything! We’ve got big things planned – obviously we can’t spill all our secrets, but we’re really excited to see the tech side of OHNE really take off… we know we’re being cryptic, just keep your eyes peeled.

OHNE boxes cost £5.80 (naked tampons) or £6.80 (applicator tampons) for the number of tampons and the absorbency type you need. And, because they’ve always got your back, both the shipping costs and that pesky tampon tax is on them!
