Fiji is a popular destination where people love to love. In this post, we’ll be exploring the reasons why this beautiful place is so well-liked. Whether it’s the breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, or warm hospitality, Fiji has something for everyone. From pristine beaches to lush rainforests, there’s no shortage of natural beauty to admire. Additionally, the opportunity to “Live In Fiji” offers a chance to immerse oneself in a laid-back island lifestyle, filled with adventure and relaxation alike. Whether you’re snorkelling in crystal-clear waters, indulging in delicious Fijian cuisine, or simply unwinding in a hammock under the swaying palm trees, Fiji truly captures the essence of paradise.

Hospitable Greetings

Fijians are known to be among the friendliest people nationwide. The word “bula” (meaning life) is used as the customary greeting. This translates to Fijians wishing each other good health and happiness. You’ll find yourself using bula every time a Fijian invites you to share a bowl of traditional kava with them. Kava is concocted from the root of some pepper plant and enjoyed by locals. The main language in Fiji is English; therefore, you will have no trouble communicating.

Tropical Beaches Galore

Envision a picture of swaying palm trees, crystal clear ocean, golden sand and tropical weather conditions, a worthy reason why Fiji is such a coveted holiday destination. Visiting Fiji for only a couple of weeks is not close to enough to fully appreciate the more than three hundred islands that form part of the archipelago. The most favored resorts and beaches are in the Yasawa and Mamanuca group islands, just northwest of the coast of the main island (Viti Levu). Other attractions include Laucala island and the coral coast of Viti Levu, in the northeast parts of the archipelago.

Luxury At Discounted Prices

You won’t easily find property bargains in Suva, but in Port Denarau Marina which is located on the small Denarau island and can be accessed by a road bridge from the main island, you can find executive-style waterfront 4-bedroom rental homes with a private jetty and swimming pool for more or less F$8000 ($3850) per month. Also, check exclusive villas Fiji for competitive pricing. Denarau is a twenty-minute drive from Nadi International Airport and flights can be taken from here to several of the smaller Fiji Islands, including Yasawas and Mamanucas. Imported goods are typically pricier in a small island country. However, the average cost of living is lower compared to other developed countries. You can shop for fresh local produce at the markets and enjoy a meal of whole lobster at Shiva’s restaurant in Sigatoka for F$60. Taxi fares and cinema are also among the affordable activities you can benefit from.

Water Activities

It won’t be easy to find better areas for snorkelling, scuba diving, and other water activities. Fiji boasts magnificent places to see soft coral. The best sites include the Great Astrolabe Reef on Kadavu, the Great white wall, Beqa Lagoon on Beqa Island and Rainbow Reef. The countless reefs offer protected waters which are supreme for engaging in activities like kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, or swimming in the warm waters. Surfing enthusiasts have plenty of great locations at their disposal on Viti Levy, and the Beqa island has world-class waves.

World-Quality Rugby

Whatever the union, code or league or no matter which format you are looking at, particularly sevens, The Fijian rugby teams are among the best entertainers of this sport. They also pack a powerful punch on the world stage. The international matches take place at the ANZ Stadium in the capital, Suva while domestic games are played at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka (nicknamed Rugby Town). The local rugby union season is running from February to September.

Travelling to a private island sounds like the epitome of luxury travel. What could be more relaxing than exploring an unspoilt tropical island, snorkelling in the sea and looking for shells along the powdery white beach? Whilst many people assume that the dream of private island travel is out of reach, some private island resorts are surprisingly affordable. In reality, there’s a private island for everyone, with many catering to families and groups of friends as well as affluent couples. Here are some of the best…

1. Tetiaroa, French Polynesia

Accessed by a seven-seater private plane or helicopter, Tatiaroa is a string of 12 islands a located 30 miles north of Tahiti. On one of these islands, you’ll find The Brando – a luxury resort made up of 35 beachfront villas. The rest of the atoll is untouched.

Tetiaroa was purchased by actor Marlon Brando in 1966 after he visited Tahiti to film Mutiny on the Bounty. Today’s resort, which opened in 2014, seeks to continue his vision that this dream atoll remains unspoilt. The resort is exquisitely Polynesian and has beautiful white-sand beaches where you can spot sea turtles, manta rays and exotic birds.

Each guest is provided with their own bicycle to explore the island, and families are welcome to stay too.

2. Cayo Espanto, Belize

Cayo Espanto is a private island resort located just off the coast of Belize which features just seven villas. It’s accessed via a seven-minute boat ride from San Pedro, Belize’s second largest island. Just four acres in size, the island has the feel of a castaway dessert island, but with more than a hint of luxury. Each bohemian beach shack on the island features a large veranda where you can enjoy an evening meal, a modern outdoor shower and a private heated infinity pool.

Staff are summoned via a walkie talkie and arrange everything you could need, from arranging excursions via a helicopter to a babysitter for the night.

3. Beachcomber Island, Fiji

If the thought of a private island sounds a little dull, then you’ve never heard of Fiji’s Beachcomber island.Every night the music is pumping, the bar is open late and the dancefloor is packed until the small hours. In addition to a great party, you can also relax and enjoy the white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters that Fiji is famed for.

Perfect for couples, families and groups of friends alike, Beachcomber island has accommodation to suit all. Budget travellers and backpackers can stay in the 42-bed Grand Dorm, whilst families can enjoy a private lodge. For something special, opt to stay in an oceanfront bure just steps away from the beach.

Parents can enjoy two hours of free babysitting each evening and there are lots of activities for families to enjoy too such as mini golf, beach volleyball and dance competitions.

4. Perfect Day at CocoCay, Bahamas

A handful of private islands are owned by cruise lines and are only accessible to cruise passengers. One such island is Royal Caribbean’s 140-acre island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas. The island recently underwent a $200 million refurbishment which saw the addition of some incredible features including the tallest water slide in North America, a 1,600-foot zip line and the largest freshwater swimming pool in the Bahamas.

The island is only equipped for day visitors currently, with cruise ships docking at the island’s pier in the morning and departing in the evening. However, the cruise line is considering making the island available for overnight stays in the future.

This private island has something for everyone, with private luxury cabanas available to hire, a huge kids’ splash park with slides, water cannons and tipping buckets, and lots of beautiful beaches to enjoy.

Where would you choose?

Whether you have a Champagne lifestyle or a lemonade budget, there’s a private island for you. If you want total isolation, a non-stop party atmosphere, or something in between, a private island can provide everything you dream of for your next getaway. Which one would you choose?

Most of us spend our lives dressing up dolls in dresses, writing diary entries describing what our groomsmen or bridesmaids will wear, and dreaming up the most lavish of locations in which to say our “I do’s”. And, luckily, the globe is littered with paradisiacal islands that weave into any dream wedding stereotype, from white sand beaches on Fiji’s Turtle Island, to fantastical flora and fauna pouring out of Italy’s Borromean Islands. If you’ve always dreamt of a luxury wedding atop an island straight out of a glossy magazine, then here are some to cast your eye over…

Borromean Islands, Italy

Italy is famed for more than just its divine pizza and pasta past, but weddings galore too. If you’re craving a Clooney-esque extravaganza then why not head to the pretty Borromean Islands? Once described by Gustav Flaubert as ‘heaven on earth,’ the tiny islands reside on the Western side of Lago Maggiore and are speckled with palm trees, flora and fauna and lemon groves, making them utterly idyllic for the exchange of vows. Albeit optional, a championed place to say I do is the Stresa town hall, a former ancient fisherman house. Then, flee to the surrounding alcoves and expansive gardens – Flaubert wasn’t far wrong in his commendation.

Little Palm Island, Florida

Elegantly positioned just at the end of U.S. Highway 1 in the Lower Keys, Little Palm Island, Florida, ticks all the “when I grow up, I want to get married in…” boxes! The oasis oozes romance, with lagoon-style pools, deck side hot tubs, private beaches, and other paradisiacal elements to boot. The resort allows for guests 16 and above, so Flora the flower girl might have to stay at home or, alternatively, you can rent out the entire property for 41 to 60 guests. Either way, key lime pie is absolutely essential, as is snapping a photo by a palm tree for the Gram!

Cayo Espanto, Belize

The circumference of Cayo Espanto is peacefully littered with fishing boats and pontoons that stretch elegantly into the ocean. Located below Mexico, bear to Guatemala, this Caribbean spot in Central America captures sunrises and sunsets that are enough to blissfully distract any visitor. The luxury island makes for a perfect spot for those who want to stir away from tradition, with piers to put a ring on it on, and snorkelling on the second largest barrier reef in the world on offer. A fish supper will delight the taste buds for the post-ceremony meal as fresh catches are reeled in from fisher men bobbing up and down on the water.

Turtle Island, Fiji

There’s something oh, so alluring about Fiji. The name itself excites the wanderlust inside us as we dream of those wooden docks and blue seas. All in all, it’s a divine place for love birds to begin the creation of their nest, especially Turtle Island, an utterly dreamy South Seas island. And, it seems, the Fijians know a thing or two about holding an epic wedding ceremony. The bride arrives by raft and is carried in by two warriors to the sound of thundering drumbeats – no, we’re not kidding!

At the on-island resort, a maximum of 14 guests can stay, making it an idyllic destination for those who want an intimate, yet luxurious gathering. However, we must say we’re already cringing at the drama of whittling down the family and friends list! Further highlights, bar the highly Instagrammable destination itself, include canopied king beds, jacuzzis, and verandas that offer coveted South Pacific views.

Paradise Island, Bahamas

With a name like Paradise Island, you know you’re likely signing up for something pretty amazing, especially as this luxury oasis sits snug in the Bahamas. The Bahamas sells itself with turquoise waters and white sand beaches galore. The Atlantis is the ‘place to be seen’ wedding destination once there, oozing elegance across its 20 contrasting wedding and reception venues. Pad barefoot down to the beach, equipped with family, friends and Champers and enjoy a vow exchange on a secluded white sand beach, with tropical settings engulfing the surrounding areas. Simply dreamy!

The Isle of Mull, Scotland

Travel to The Isle of Mull and get married in the spellbinding Duart Castle. Home to sea, scrag and ancient structures, this island will see you lose your Wi-Fi but gain some epic images set against moody and creative backdrops. The Scottish island immerses you in all things nature, and the castle can be seen as you approach by sea. There are two gorgeous spaces for small ceremonies, The Sea and Drawing Room, or marry inside the beautiful Banqueting Hall that presents the Clan Maclean regalia. It’s a Game of Thrones-esque place to wed, and one that will inevitably take the breath away.

It can’t just be #TeamCoco who find swimsuit shopping nothing short of a nightmare?

Today we speak with Jade, founder of The Mermaid HQwho designs swimwear for real women, crafted from eco-friendly and recycled fibres. Could The Mermaid HQ be the answer to all our beach day prayers? We certainly think so…

HOC: Hey Jade! Great to meet you. Let’s start with the trickier one, what’s your elevator pitch for The Mermaid HQ?

Jade: First of all, WOAH. On the spot?! Here I go.

My name is Jade and I am the founder and creator of The Mermaid HQ.

Revenue in the Sports and swimwear industry alone (for Australia) amounts to US$1,219 million in 2019. The market is expected to grow annually by 1.0% (CAGR 2019-2023)

Did you know that there is actually a gap in the Australian market for active swimwear? I’m not talking about swimwear created for queens of Bondi. Neither am I talking about swimwear for the already fabulous to look even more stunning in. I am talking about active swimwear. Swimwear for the rest of us, people who want to make that walk from the changing room to the pool or beach in pieces that make us feel confident.

The swimwear ad campaigns over the decades have provided the subliminal message that on-trend swimwear is available for one body type and one body type only.

I want to start a revolution to validate and elevate real women, of all ages, shapes, colours, and sizes, in trendy eco-friendly and sustainable swimwear. At The Mermaid HQ, we create swimwear made of eco-friendly and recycled fibres sourced from discarded fishing nets, and recycled ocean plastic. In doing so, we deal with the marine pollution problem and use less virgin materials designing swimwear for real women, of all ages, shapes, colours, and sizes, who are also conscious of their environmental impact.

As an already established brand, my label is poised to move into bags, clothing, towels, jewellery and so much more. I want to offer you an opportunity to invest in my revenue-positive brand, that is well-positioned to secure a strong foothold in a $20 billion dollar global swimwear market. I am asking for $100,000 dollars for 10% equity.

Help me, start a revolution.

HOC: Sign us up, what a great pitch! Can you tell us about your personal background and your journey to running your business?

Jade: Of course, I’m a 23 years old undergrad from Fiji, currently working on finishing up my double bachelors degree in Art and Commerce, majoring in Accounting and Interior Architecture at the University of Canberra. To be honest, I had thought a lot about starting my own business years ago, but I never really had the capital to invest into any venture, neither was I able to narrow down what service I could supply that was already in demand. I was also very afraid of failing.

It wasn’t until a friend of mine suggested that we start an online store, that I had begun to share the ideas and visions I had kept to myself till then. So, in September 2018, we started a clothing label, and our main focus was providing festival go-ers with their get-up for their music fest du-jour.

It didn’t really work out, I felt that we both had creative differences and so we decided to part ways, and dissolve the label. But, I still wanted to make my visions a reality. So I dove into another business venture that I had been mulling over for about 3 years. Swimwear. Specifically bikini sets that weren’t sold separately, and didn’t cost an arm and a leg to own.

As a university student, working as a part-time waitress, spending $70 on a bikini top seemed absurd to me. If I wanted a matching bikini bottom, that would be another $70 or $80.

So I decided to start a swimwear label, targeted towards women around my age, who don’t have the luxury of spending a lot of money just to look good for a day at the beach. To keep it simple, uni-students who wanna look good without breaking the bank. I did my research, sourced my manufacturer, and set-up my website on my own. I designed my logo on my phone using the Canva App, during one of my lunch breaks at work!

After 3 months of working out the kinks, gathering different designs, I officially launched my swimwear label, The Mermaid HQ. The swimwear label for mermaids in training. Women who love to live freely and feel confident in their own skin.

HOC: We love this bootstrapping story! We know you grew up in Fiji, Indonesia and Timor-Leste ; has this had an impact on your designs?

Jade: Absolutely. Having spent the majority of my formative years in those countries, was the main reason I wanted to start my own swimwear label.

When you think of Fiji, you think of our white sandy beaches and sipping cocktails by the shore. My fondest memory of Indonesia was the dawn that I witnessed the birth of, what felt like, dozens of tiny little turtles. Hiking along Timor- Leste’s Areia Branca, up to the Statue of Christ replica, is still my favourite memory of living there.

Each country had a tropical climate, and each had their own unique island vibe. When I look at prints for my swimwear, I gravitate more towards the blues that remind me of Areia Branca, the leaf prints that make me think about the vendors that would sit underneath coconut trees with their carts, cutting open coconuts for their water, for locals and tourists. In my mind’s eye, I keep in mind the people in the places I grew up in, and I think about the colours I associate with those places, and whether or not they would wear a particular design.

HOC: You self funded your business launch through part-time work, how was that for you?

Jade: Honestly, it wasn’t easy. Apart from inventory, I had to think about everything to do with my business myself; things like shipping locally, and internationally; taking into account the rates, custom taxes. Packaging was another issue I had to tackle. What packaging am I going to use? Wrapping paper? Where will I put my logo?

Then came all the work to do with having a presence like making sure my label’s instagram and facebook accounts were active and posting often. I wanted to ensure that potential customers who would come across the label’s social media pages would have recent content to look over.

So many little things, that all came together to make a bigger picture! It was tough, especially since I decided to launch my label a month before University exams. It was very hard, juggling working in the mornings, classes and tutorials in the afternoons, and then working on my label at night.

Keeping my energy up was the easy part, I guess. I work in a cafe, so coffee was a constant factor. I also work with a fantastic crew. They made coming to work a highlight. The constant banter kept me sane. At Uni, I took classes with my friends so it was easy to dive back into that because I knew I wasn’t alone, I was always able to ask them for help.

Sleep was the hardest thing to come by. I’d be so wired from my long days, that it was easier for me to funnel my restless energy into doing something I love. Which in this case was building a brand. I had learned so much from failing at my first attempt at running a label, and I used that information to help me build The Mermaid HQ.

HOC: What makes The Mermaid HQ different from other swimwear brands?

Jade: In a nutshell, it’s a swimwear label, founded and run by a female international university student, from the Pacific Island of Fiji.

I decided to name my label, The Mermaid HQ, because the definition of a mermaid, symbolically speaking, revolves around the divine feminine energies, and the true power of the female spirit. When I was trying to figure out the name of my label, for some odd reason I was drawn to the word “mermaids”. In my research, I read that “to have a connection to a mermaid, is to have goddess energies, is to have intuitive abilities, is to be a healer of the heart and of the ocean.”

I wanted the women who wore my swimwear to feel like they were mermaids, to be attuned to divine feminine energies. When they wear my label, I want them to feel like women who love to live freely and feel confident in their own skin. “Healer of the heart and of the ocean” spoke to me because of my ambition to expand into making sustainable eco-friendly swimwear made from fabric that was a by-product of recycled ocean plastic. So I wanted to create a Headquarters (HQ), where these women could connect with their divine feminine energy, become mermaids in training. And there, I had my brand. The Mermaid HQ, for mermaids in training.

HOC: What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Jade: My list of things to-do! Ever since I got my first sales, 2 days after the label launched, it’s been incredible. I’m a full time undergrad, with a cafe gig. I hate to say it but those are 2 main reasons I kick myself out of bed. However, ever since my label has gained traction, my to-do list has been filled with getting in touch with models, and photographers, organising photoshoots, sourcing more materials for my swimwear, as well as creating ad and marketing campaigns.

You have no idea how addictive it is to dive into all this work. I find it so exciting, and I lose myself in my work.

HOC: If you weren’t running The Mermaid HQ, what would you be doing?

Jade: I’d be finishing my degrees, and working at the cafe. So not that much of a difference. I’d be focusing more on sending out internship applications. If I didn’t have my swimwear label, I think I’d still be working on my festival line. Attending start-up expo’s in my free time. Figuring out how to get my festival line out there.

Besides work, school, and side-hustling, I like to take advantage of travelling around Australia. Doing mini-road trips with my friends whenever we have days off. I like attending concerts, going out of town to see the Vivid Light Show in Sydney, or taking trips down to Melbourne to see what exhibitions the Melbourne Museum has to offer. Those are just some of the things I’ve done. Typical 20-something activities!

HOC: What resources did you find useful on your journey to launching your own business, you mentioned being inspired by some other female founders?

Jade: Oh definitely. I find Interviews with entrepreneurs, specifically Jane Lu, the founder of Showpo very inspirational. Showpo had made around $30 Million in 2018, 7 years after Jane Lu founded the company. She started out almost like me.

It was comforting to know, that it doesn’t matter how I start, or how small it is, what really matters is whether I have to stamina to keep going and keep pushing forward even when faced with obstacles. Her interviews on Youtube were particularly interesting, and I found her Showpo Video addressing the fact that she and her employees had “stuffed up” regarding issues with the business. I found this admirable, and it galvanised me. Making mistakes is okay, as long as you work on providing a solution. I took that and I ran with it.

Iyia Liu was an entrepreneur that I discovered on Instagram. She has many successful ventures under her belt and she is a business woman I aspire to be like some day. Her venture, Girls In Business, was a resource I found helpful. A community of entrepreneurial females who offer support to other females wishing to grow their empires. The great thing about the digital age, is that there is so much content available online. All those hours spent doing research for homework in the last decade really came in handy!

HOC: Swimwear season can often be a source of upset for many of our readers who don’t live the beach life year round. What advice would you have for them choosing the right swimwear and feeling badass?

Jade: I don’t think House of Coco readers should base their swimwear on whether or not they live the “beach life” year round. But I do understand that with the seasonal change, many would not have the chance to wear them as often as they probably see insta-baddies do.

I have personally paired bikini tops with high-waisted jeans, shorts, skirts, for a night out with my friends, to attend a music festival, and attend a concert!

My advice to your readers would be, Step 1. choose a bikini that compliments you, your figure, and your skin tone. Step 2, ask yourself, what in my closet right now, would I be able to wear this with. Do not limit yourself to only wearing your swimwear to the beach.

Have a mix of swimwear that you can adapt into your everyday or going out looks. An upside to this, is that you’ll know which pieces of swimwear still fit you once it’s summer again.

HOC: That may be the best piece of swimwear advice I have ever heard, thanks Jade! Finally, what’s your ambition for the rest of 2019?

Jade: I have recently begun using biodegradable mailing packages. My goal is to steer my label, make it greener, more sustainable. My ambition is to slowly integrate SEAQUAL fabric as the main material for my swimwear.

SEAQUAL is a certified, earth-friendly polyester yarn, made from recycled materials, including post consumer plastic bottles and more importantly plastic captured from the sea. They also ecological dyes and finishes based on saving water and energy. I would use this fabric to create my Plus-size swimwear collection.

Seeing as I am from Fiji, another ambition of mine is to have more people of colour not only model my swimwear, but be featured in all social media platforms regarding my label. I want to use my platform to contribute to my community. My message is to create swimwear for women who love to live freely and feel confident in their own skin. This extends to women in everyday life. Real women, everywhere. Women who not only look like my friends, but women who also look like my mom, my aunties, and my grandmother. I want to design swimwear that truly embraces women of all shapes, sizes, ages, and colours.

City of Lights. Entertainment Capital of the World. Whatever you call it, Las Vegas is everything you hope it would be and more. It’s the place that never sleeps and the place that you won’t want to sleep as there is so much action that you won’t want to miss out.

72 hours might not sound like a lot but it’s more than enough time to cause some carnage, over load your liver with copious amounts of alcohol and really leave your mark on the vibrant city. From boozy brunches and day clubs, to casinos and fine dining, we’ve got the lowdown on where you need to be seen in the city…

What to wear

If you went to Las Vegas and you didn’t wear glitter, did you really go to Las Vegas? There is no better brand for the job than cult glitter company, The Gypsy Shrine. To make it easier to choose from their vast collection of jewels and glitter, they’ve created the Las Vegas collection which is sure to get you noticed whilst in town. Whether you want to don jewels on your face, put glitter in your roots or plaster your body head to toe, this is the collection for you.

Where to eat

Beauty and Essex is a must visit for dinner whilst in town. Although the name might have you thinking of TOWIE, there isn’t a badly tanned reality star in sight. When you arrive you might be a little confused as you enter through a pawn shop (try not be tempted by the vintage Chanel’s) but this gives way to a restaurant and lounge serving creative American fare and the best cocktails that side of the Atlantic. It’s an energetic dining experience with low lights, not great for getting THAT Insta’ shot but perfect for a date. It’s all about sharing plates here which is a great way to sample the best of their menu. A must try is their Chorizo Carbonara mac n cheese, totally cliched to say but it really does melt in your mouth.

Where to party

Hyde Nightclub at the Bellagio is lit. It’s not out of place to see a couple on their wedding day, wedding dress and all, shacking out to the funky house bangers! With jaw dropping views of the Bellagio fountains as you dance the night away, this is the place to be seen. Expect cannons to erupt and spray you with sparkles and confetti and music that is sure to have you dancing on the tables. The best way to do the Hyde is VIP (standard), with table service and a reserved table, because this place really gets full and you don’t want to waste precious drinking time queuing at the bar.

What to do

A visit to the Seven Magic Mountains is sure to get you the perfect gram worthy shot. Plus, where else in the world can you stand next to seven art sculptures, in the middle of the desert, under the blistering sun? Five years in the making, the sculptures are regarded as the largest land based installation in 40 years. With their bright neon colours, you wouldn’t be crazy to think it’s a mirage as you make your way down the motorway to check them out.

Where to sleep

We can all name the iconic hotels, from the Bellagio to the Venetian, but what about the other hotels that let you escape from the madness? Cue the arrival of Vdara hotel. Part of the MGM Resorts growing list of properties, it’s a calm oasis that feels a million miles away from the casino carnage but it’s actually just a stones throw away. As an all suite hotel you’re pretty much guaranteed an epic room and the views are just as special too. Expect to be spoilt with the option of a shower or a bath but be careful of drinking the Fiji bottled water in the room, it’ll set you back a small fortune of $15!
