Zirbelzimmer at the Sacher Hotel Salzburg
There is no hotel in Salzburg that better captures its spirit than the Sacher Hotel. Its beautiful oak panelled restaurant, Zirbelzimmer, is the best place in town for a traditional Austrian meal and stunning views of the River Salzach. Its handsome interiors are soaked in centuries of history, with guests like Queen Elizabeth, and the Dalai Lama gracing its hallowed halls. Helmed by the Gault Millau toque awarded Executive Chef Michael Gahleitner, Zirbelzimmer offers a wonderful combination of both local and international cuisine. Don’t leave the Sacher Hotel without trying the original Sacher-Torte. Created by the young Franz Sacher in 1832, for the Prince von Metternich, the Sacher Torte is a word-famous Austrian dessert that combines chocolate, apricot jam, and whipped cream.

M32
Nestled atop the Mönschberg and with an entrance through the Museum of Modern Art that would make even a Bond villain swoon, the M32 is a stunning culinary destination that combines panoramic views, modern stylish interiors, and fresh local fare. Their menu is a combination of Mediterranean and Austrian cuisine, and only uses locally sourced ingredients no further than 32 miles from the restaurant. So if you’re not digging into a Fried fillet of alpine salmon or cutting into Fillet steak — take in the breathtaking panoramic views of the city in the Salzburg’s most beautiful terrace restaurant.

St.Peter’s Stiftskulinarium
Opened in 803 a.d. and located in the historic St.Peter’s Abbey Complex, the St.Peter’s Stiftskulinarium is hailed as the oldest restaurant in Europe. Featuring eleven unique dining areas including vaulted abbey courtyards, intricate baroque halls, and historic wine-cellars, the ST.Peter’s Stiftskulinarium is a dining experience like nothing else in the world. With a menu of haute Austrian cuisine created by Chef Manfred Bessenböcks, it is no wonder why St.Peter’s Stiftskulinarium is one of the highest rated restaurants in Austria. St.Peter’s Stiftskulinarium also offers a “Connaissuer Selections Menu”. An ever-changing weekly menu that offers impeccable seasonal delicacies with matching wine pairings; a definite highlight for a gastronomic tour around Salzburg.

On a cold winter day, our UK travel writer Rachel McAlley set off for a couple of days for #TeamCoco to the Durham Dales to experience the Durham Dales Experience: beautiful countryside, a wonderful 5-star hotel, a well-known arts and cultural museum, and a quaint market town.

I drove through the Yorkshire snow, and into the Durham frost to a very sunny and not at all snowy Rockliffe Hall near Darlington, for a day and night of pure luxury and pampering.

A Solo Female Traveler’s Delight

As a solo female traveller, I wanted to experience the hotel’s grounds and go for a walk, so I took it upon myself to leave my luggage at the reception and head out into the acres of lovely countryside to take in some fresh air and simply enjoy the Rockliffe Hall grounds – an Instagrammers dream!

I was introduced to the brand new MischMasch area of the gardens; a wonderland of curiosities for kids, including six little secret hideaway pods filled with exciting things like a huge Smart TV for movies in one, a pool table and darts board in another, chill out pod to hang with friends in another, and generally have fun in the rest! The child in me wanted to hang out in the pod with the pool table and darts board with my fully grown-up mates and maybe have a glass of wine and just chill for the day.

Indulgence and Relaxation: A Day at Rockliffe Hall

I ventured further afield and took myself through the grounds and across to the Clubhouse, where the hotel’s golfers relax and enjoy a drink and some food. A fab little walk was all I needed after the long drive, and a fab little walk was what I got – it gave me a chance to wind down and enjoy a little me time.

Back into the gorgeous Rockliffe Hall and to The Brasserie for a light lunch (Chicken Caesar Salad, with a side order of fries, and a divine pear tart to finish), looking over the sunkissed golf course and Spa Garden with its steaming hot infinity edge experience pool and warm Jacuzzi, this really was going to be a relaxing stay.

After lunch, I was booked for a 90-minute luxury Neom candle wax massage with an Indian head massage, which was quite possibly the most indulgent massage I have ever experienced. Not only was the treatment super relaxing, but it was also calming, stress relieving, and reflective. The only issue was that the 90 minutes flew-by too fast, I could have stayed for hours having this treatment. This wonderful candle wax massage transported me to a time and place where my mind, body and soul relaxed into that floating state between being awake and asleep – it was simply heavenly.

Ultimate Relaxation and Luxury: Rockliffe Hall Retreat

Post-treatment I was taken to the relaxation room, where I came round from my sleepy state and made the decision to go for a swim in the indoor pool. I could have ventured into the Garden Spa to fully immerse myself in the Rockliffe Hall experience on one of the sound wave therapy beds, but on this occasion, my super-relaxed body couldn’t take me outside, so I simply collapsed on a sun-lounger and then went for a glorious swim.

It was time to leave the award-winning spa and officially check in to my room. Okay, so there are many wonderful luxurious hotel rooms that #TeamCoco have had the pleasure of staying in, but this stunning superior first-floor room in the Old Hall was old-world beauty at its finest, king-sized bed, Egyptian cotton bedding, private living area, huge Smart TV (and a dinky TV at the bottom of the bath), bathrobes and slippers, locally produced biscuits and teas and coffees, plus a Nespresso coffee machine, complimentary water and fresh milk, and extraordinary views of the gardens.

All-in-all the room was a private haven of tranquillity and space, perfect for a solo traveller like myself. I used the desk to do some writing for the magazine and catch up with emails, before taking a bath, and then spending the evening on the sofa watching TV and movies.

Culinary Delights and Morning Vibes: A Stay at Rockliffe Hall

I ordered room service rather than heading to The Orangery, the hotel’s award-winning restaurant, as I wanted to enjoy the beautiful Old Hall bedroom that I was lucky to be staying in.

The room service menu was as good as the earlier Brasserie menu, filled with classic dishes, contemporary dishes and room service must-haves. I chose a couple of nibbles (pork scratchings and homemade bread) rather than a starter; I enjoyed the nibbles with a glass of wine before opting for a classic main course (fish and chips with tartar sauce and Yorkshire caviar), a hearty dessert (crumble and ice cream) and a small selection of cheeses. I ordered way too much food, but it was worth it, especially the crumble.

After my ensuing food coma it was time to wrap up warm under the bed covers and dream about fairies in the garden pods at Rockliffe Hall!

Breakfast was taken in the hotel restaurant, it was a buzzing hive of businessmen and women getting ready for the day ahead, couples that had enjoyed a romantic night away from home, and a few solo travellers like myself. Everyone was tucking into either a full English breakfast, eggs Florentine (my breakfast of choice), or simple pastries and coffee, a delicious way to start the day.

Exploring Barnard Castle: History, Culture, and Charm

After checking out of the hotel it was a 40-minute drive across the county from Darlington to Teesdale and Barnard Castle, a quaint market town filled with independent shops and little cafes. I visited a couple of shops in the town including a chocolate shop and a lovely stationery shop. Then I ventured to the world-renowned The Bowes Museum for a morning of culture, history and antiques.

Housing internationally significant collections of fine and decorative arts, the Museum was purpose-built in the 19th Century by wealthy businessman John Bowes and his French actress wife Josephine. Their romantic story was revealed as I wandered around the elegant Grade I Listed building and the gorgeous gardens.

The diverse collections begun by this amazing couple are constantly being added to and currently span three floors of this magnificent French-style chateau in the heart of the Durham Wolds.

Antique Adventures and Abbey Ruins: Exploring the Durham Wolds

Housed in the Museum’s main exhibition space, I spent time being walked through the SOLD! Exhibition (running until May), the display takes the visitor on a journey through 200 years of antique dealing through an innovative ‘shopping for antiques’ theme.

After a couple of hours of culture and history, it was time to depart The Bowes Museum and make my way to the old ruins of Egglestone Abbey before driving from the sunshine of the Durham Wolds back into the Yorkshire snow!

I had a great couple of days filled with relaxation, excellent food, history, and rambling in and around the Durham Wolds aka the Durham Dales, and you can be sure that either myself or someone else from #TeamCoco will be returning to Durham, as there’s plenty more to see including the historical city of Durham itself and also the pretty Durham coast.

This trip for House of Coco Magazine was kindly organised by the following three tourism, hospitality, and arts businesses in the Durham Dales:

LaLaLand was explored Part 1 of this mini series where I walked you through my first mad weekend in Los Angeles at the Girl Boss Rally and exploring the retro Farmers’ Market. Come with me as I fill you in on the new rural escape giving Palm Springs a run for its visitor-friendly money.

Introducing… Ojai.

TUESDAY

7am: Up early with purpose this morning as we were off to spiritual city Ojai, in Ventura County, north of Los Angeles. Despite the looks of utter confusion on Angelenos’ faces, it is very easy to get to on public transport.

11:30am: A $25, 2 hour Amtrak train ride took us from Los Angeles‘ epic and film-famous Union Station, through stations that were almost definitely from WestWorld, past film sets to Ventura where an easy Uber ride dropped us at another accidental hip vegan lunch spot The Farmer and The Cook.

1:00pm: Arrow Heart Yoga in Ojai has a resident masseuse, Lauren who is beyond incredible. We went in feeling like death reheated and came out dancing on rainbows. What was in that tea?

5:00pm: We checked in at great value and super comfy The Hummingbird Inn on the outskirts of downtown Ojai after taking the local old fashioned shuttle from the yoga studio. Changed for dinner we wander the cute main street, checking out thrift stores for the next day and eat the chef’s special tacos at Agave Maria with a local mandarin frozen margarita. This has to be living the dream.

7:00pm: An ice-cream night cap at retro parlour Ojai Ice Cream

WEDNESDAY

9:00am: After a restorative night’s rest we are back on the path again, first thing checking out our hotel’s neighbour the gorgeous 70s style The Capri Hotel with our complimentary morning coffee in hand. In fact, our hotel and The Capri have been purchased by small chain Shelter Social Club who have great plans to bring the hotels back to their former glories with chilled pool parties and super comfortable suites from which to explore the local nature.

12:00pm: Having smashed through the goodies in amazing local thrift stores (2nd Helpings, New 2 You) We fall upon the biggest cinnamon bun we’ve ever seen in Ojai Cafe Emporium with a box salad to enjoy later.

2:00pm: Continuing down the main street we visit gorgeous interior shop DeKor and end up in local outpost of Beacon Coffee for a nitro cold brew (yes, we thought they were making it up too but apparently not, it’s everywhere.)

3:00pm: Now for our real secret and you’ve got to promise that only the truly worthy will hear of this…. To use the stunning spa at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, yes, the 5* one where Audrey Hepburn used to stay and real life silver screen legends like Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts frequent …you don’t need to be a hotel guest, just book a treatment and you can spend all afternoon in the Spa. Mic drop.

We opted for the Kuyam, a treatment inspired by the local Chumash Native American Indians, then read magazines and drank local herbal tea to our hearts’ content.

6:00pm: Sitting on the spa terrace we witness Ojai’s famous ‘Pink Moment’ when the sun sets and turns the mountains pink as it does so. We had no camera on us in the spa to capture it for you, you should probably just go and see for yourselves.

7:00pm: We round off our 5* experience with a local beer at Jimmy’s Pub gazing at the outlines of the mountains and all the stars we never get to see at home.

THURSDAY

9:30am: We check out new bakery on the block, Knead. If you have to check that the coffee and orange peel studded breakfast cake is, indeed for one person, this is our kind of place!

11:00am: A few more shops to hit up on the search for presents for friends back home ; FIG living stands out for their inspirational quote tea towels and make up bags and for the fact that, as it’s International Women’s Day, they are donating 20% of their takings to a local fund that empowers girls to speak up for themselves. Totally #GirlBoss so we naturally buy everything.

12:00pm: A last lunch in Ojai at colourful 50s style diner Bonnie Lu’s before catching the Amtrak back to Los Angeles for our final weekend.

2:00pm: We didn’t bet on the local cab company taking so long to pick us up (too accustomed to Uber, clearly) so we miss the Amtrak. Grr. However, we do learn that our driver used to be a top chef in LA and hangs out at mountain retreats with Woody Harrelson.

2:30pm: No fear, we can get an Uber out here at the Amtrak station back into Los Angeles. We take shelter from the sun in cute Sandbox Coffee House right by the station and are saved by Frank who is happy to take us the 1.15hr drive back to the city.

3:00pm: Driving through the valleys we blast out Social Distortion, stopping at an incredible local fruit stand and spying Magic Mountain.

4:30pm: A spot of Los Angeles traffic later we arrive at our low cost hotel for the last few nights in LA; PodShare is a budget but well prepared shared working / living space which only sets us back $40/night in Los Feliz

6:00pm: Out in town again, this time to sample the Filipino BBQ delights of The Park’s Finest ; check back soon for the full review of this awesome meaty feast. No vegans allowed!

You’ve certainly seen The Dalloway Terrace’s beautiful Winter set up on your Insta-feed at one point or another this holiday season. Its beautiful crystallised white, pink, and silver flowers, cosy Foxford woollen blankets, and romantic candle-lit atmosphere have earned it the reputation of being one of London’s most Instagrammable Restaurants. Team Coco checks out The Dalloway Terrace,London’s most beautiful winter dining destination.

Located in the heart of the West End, The Dalloway Terrace is the perfect place for a festive treat this winter. Forget Winter Wonderland, Nikki Tibbles from Wild at Heart has transformed this lovely all weather terrace into a whimsical hideaway that features champagne coloured frosted foliage, whimsical natural lichen, and frosty white magnolia and eucalyptus. Transforming the Dalloway Terrace into a gastronomic winter wonderland that is as enchanting as it is festive. This holiday season, Chef Byron Moussouris adds new twists to his modern British menu and also borrows some alpine inspiration for its seasonal all-day dining menu. Including a choice of either Swiss Cheese Fondue or Truffle Cheese Fondue to share! You can bet we indulged in some Truffles, after all it’s the holidays.

If not in the mood for fondue, we recommend starting off with the tiger prawns in Harissa aioli, they are not just delicious, but also arrive in a very generous serving. For your main course, we recommend the 100% acorn fed Iberico Pork fillet, served with Hispi cabbage and tender stem broccoli for a truly festive meal. Finish off with some Dark chocolate fondant with roasted hazelnut ice cream, and wash it all down with a warming cocktail. This year, the Dalloway Terrace’s winter cocktail menu is the result of a collaboration with Belsazar Vermouth. If it’s a particularly chilly winter evening, we recommend going for the Hug in a Mug. A mixture of Belsazar White, Cachaca Yaguara, Chamomile Tea, and Honey – you will certainly go home feeling all the warm and fuzzy winter feels, and maybe a few snaps for Instagram – or ten. We can assure you, it’ll be difficult to find a more beautiful winter spot in town.

The Dalloway Terrace is located in the Bloomsbury hotel at 16-22 Great Russell Street. For more information visit www.dallowayterrace.com @dallowayterrace #WinterAtDalloway

Here at House of Coco, we spend a serious amount of time swooning over the coolest hotels in the world. But what exactly is it that takes a hotel from standard to chic? Whether it’s an ultra-hip location or sheer isolation, adventure or high-end architecture, #TeamCoco is always on the lookout for unique hotels with that extra-special edge. From boutique desert boltholes to arctic tree houses, here are five of the coolest hotels in the world…

https://www.instagram.com/p/BhCI3UoHKdg/?utm_source=ig_embed

Scarabeo Desert Camp, Marrakech

We love authentic experiences, even more so when they’re coupled with a touch of luxury – so when we saw Scarabeo’s Desert Camp, we knew we were in glamping heaven. Just 15 tents stand among the desert dunes outside of Marrakech – each decorated with bedouin-rugs, oriental fabrics and local artwork for an irresistible old-world desert explorer vibe. # TeamCoco ’s top tip – opt to be picked up in a vintage sidecar from the airport to really feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BcG-QtiFCrG/?taken-by=sonevajani_

Soneva Jani, Maldives

Sliding from the roof of your villa right into the waters of the Indian Ocean, you’d be hard-pressed to imagine a cooler hotel room. If your very own water slide isn’t enough (who are we kidding – of course it is) the villas at Soneva Jani also offer retractable roofs for stargazing, direct lagoon access and there’s an alfresco beach cinema. With a barefoot island feel alongside super-luxe touches, we think this might be the Maldives at its most magical.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BgrEcUtFEHY/?taken-by=treehotel

Tree Hotel, Sweden

You’re never too old for a treehouse in our book, particularly when that treehouse is one of seven avant-garde design rooms suspended above the forest deep in Swedish Lapland. From the otherworldly ‘UFO’ to the most recent minimalist ‘7th room’, each may be different, but all are designed to immerse guests in this incredible arctic landscape. Husky safaris, zip-lining and northern lights chasing are just some of the activities on offer if you can bear to leave the uber-cool refuge of your treetop den, that is.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bgu15KBlqhq/?tagged=amangiri

Amangiri, Utah

An oasis of luxury in Utah’s alien desert landscape, Amangiri’s minimalist design, otherworldly surroundings and trademark Aman opulence are what make this hotel truly iconic. Ultra exclusive suites (some with private pools, swoon) open out onto the wind-warped landscape, red-rock cliffs and endless sandstone desert. There are plenty of desert activities on offer, but in a setting, this serene #TeamCoco recommends sitting back and simply soaking up the scenery from the pool or spa.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BT1uOvflKop/?utm_source=ig_embed

The Ace Hotel, Palm Springs

This hipster hangout is housed in a former motel, transformed by Ace into the place to see and be seen in Palm Springs (the ultimate playground for LA weekenders). By day you’ll find the rosé flowing, music playing and the Instagram set by the pool, enjoying the stunning mountain backdrop and preparing to continue the party late into the night. Rooms have a chic, desert-Hollywood aesthetic, while vintage magazines and a retro photo booth complete the old-school cool vibe.

Have you ever heard of a ‘daycay’? Until today, I haven’t either. However, thanks to DaybreakHotels, you can now spend a day in some of the UK’s most luxurious hotels without breaking the bank.

Last Wednesday, we made our way to The Athenaeum Hotel & Residences in Mayfair for an indulgent mid-week ‘daycay’ of our own. Located in front of Green Park, the Athenaeum Hotel & Residences is a stylish five-star hotel that captures the spirit of Mayfair. The family run hotel has been rooted in Mayfair since 1850 and has previously been a stately home, an exclusive Victorian members club, and a favourite haunt amongst Hollywood’s elite in the 1970s.

We began our day cation with lunch at Galvin at the Athenaeum. Helmed by Michelin-starred chefs and brothers Chris and Jeff Galvin, the menu was a masterclass in contemporary British cuisine. We began our meal, as you do with a luxury ‘daycay’ with some champagne. Afterwards,we had the Galvin Cure Smoked Salmon, followed by the lovely Wild Mushroom Pappardelle with Hazelnut Pesto and Crispy Sage.

After a lovely lunch, we made our way to our park facing stunning suite. With unparalleled views of Royal Green Park, luxury amenities, and modern interiors, the suite at The Atheneaum is everything a discerning traveller can ask for and more. After having a few glasses of red and taking in the scenery, we made our way downstairs to the Spa. In the spa, you will find a couple of jacuzzi’s, a sauna, and a steam room — where you can enjoy some much needed me-time and some more champagne too.

Originally founded in Rome back in 2014, DayBreakHotels now operates in 15 countries with over 3500 hotels in their network. We’re all about choosing me-time over overtime, and with Daybreakhotels changing the game of the luxury hotel scene it seems that we will be making more mid-week visits to The Athenaeum Hotel & Residences soon.

Day Rooms at The Athenaeum Hotel & Residences are available from 9am to 12pm and overnight rooms from 10pm to 6am. Guests an also add on the use of other hotel facilities including pools, spas, and restaurants. A day in the superior Double Room at the Athenaeum via DayBreakHotels is £199, while a day in a suite costs £360. Spa access can be requested at £25/hour.

There’s nothing like being stuck inside to make you appreciate the great outdoors. So while COVID-19 may mean we are unable to travel at the moment, it won’t stop us dreaming of our next glamping getaway. Whether it’s a cosy cabin, whimsical treehouse or bedecked bell tent, these unusual staycation choices are not only eco-friendly but will support local businesses when it is once again safe to travel. Add to that an outdoor bathtub for an alfresco soak, and there’s nowhere we’d rather get off-the-grid and back to nature.
While we may not be able to travel right now – companies like Canopy and Stars also do gift cards, so you can support businesses in the short term and plan your trip for when it is safe to travel. In the meantime, here are 9 of the best outdoor bathtubs in the UK to inspire your next staycation – whenever that may be.

The Woodman’s Treehouse , West Dorset

Set high in the oak canopy, this stylish treehouse tucked away in ancient Dorset woodland is a design-lovers dream getaway – having been featured on both Grand Designs and George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. For those uninitiated in the ways of accommodation in the bustling city centres of Morocco’s cities: riad = traditional Moroccan house/palace with a central courtyard/garden. Luckily for us, many of these have now been converted into sumptuous hotels, replete with colourful tiles, ornate balconies and flower-laden inner courtyards. Traditionally, a riad would house a multi-generational family within its several floors and so is the perfect intimate size for visitors to Morocco looking for a taste of the authentic. Morocco’s magical capital, Marrakesh, has over 1,000 converted riads in the city centre so it can be very difficult to know which one to go for. Rachael Lindsay has been lucky enough to visit Marrakesh several times so she gives us her pick of the top three riads in the city.

For the space : Les Borjs de la Kasbah

Very few riads in the centre have the space for a swimming pool so if you are the kind of person who loves a morning dip (like me) then go for the spacious, but centrally located, Les Borjs de la Kasbah. The entire riad has been constructed by hand, from the decorative archways to the hand-dug swimming pool, with the help of a trusty donkey of course. Each room is uniquely designed with traditional Moroccan furnishings and handcrafted zellige mosaic tilework. In terms of design, burnt ochre and peach feature heavily with brass trellis lanterns, dark wood four-poster beds and natural marble bathrooms. Don’t miss the sumptuous pancake-filled breakfast or the top-notch restaurant of Moroccan classics.

Check out my full review here: https://houseofcoco.net/a-riad-for-all-seasons-les-borjs-de-la-kasbah-marrakesh/.

For the style : Riad Farnatchi

Down a winding alley and behind a heavy, dark door lies this boutique riad, whose design manages to blend modern chic with Arabic heritage. Think plush white armchairs, vaulted ceilings and intricate Berber pillows. Go here for the spa as well as the style – I enjoyed the best hammam experience of my life in the Farnatchi Spa. The restaurant is also exquisite, featuring twists on Moroccan classics as well as international plates like pate de foie gras and Vietnamese spring rolls. A little more pricey than most riads in the city centre but totally worth it for the effortless luxury which I struggled to find elsewhere.

Read my review of the spa and restaurant here: https://houseofcoco.net/in-the-marrakesh-medina-farnatchi-spa-and-le-trou-au-mur/.

For the atmosphere: Le Riad Berbere

This riad is very reasonably priced for its gorgeous minimalist rooms, lush Islamic garden and romantic, candlelit evenings. Restored to reflect and respect its glory days in the 17thcentury, there is something about the atmosphere in this riad which exudes peace and tranquillity. Perhaps it is due to how tiny it is and how personalized the service (with only five rooms). The restaurant serves up the usual Moroccan affair of couscous and crepes, but with everything produced from scratch in the organic kitchen, you know you are getting the very best of authentic Marrakesh cuisine.

Here at House of Coco, we are known for our love of good cuisine, our ability to work hard and relax even harder. So when we heard about the new concept Mondrian London have recently launched we were beyond thrilled. SPA Social at agua Bathhouse & Spa is the stuff of dreams.

With fitness, health and eating well becoming more and more of a lifestyle choice rather than a trend, people are becoming more conscious of what they do to and put into their bodies. So, the idea is designed to bring people together through health, wellness and social interaction.

There isn’t one of us that doesn’t love a spa day or eating out and catching up with friends but who has the time to balance it all? Spa Social allows you to, in the evening and on a week day.

The spa itself is a blissful getaway from London life, tranquil and with all the facilities you could possibly need. From steam rooms, mud masks and massages to manicures and waxes, you can fully pamper yourself in one place in one evening.

The food available is from Sea Containers and is unbelievably delicious and healthy, with Skinny Champagne available; you can have a guilt free evening.

The lounge area boasts a water feature, ambient lighting, comfy sofa beds in which you can either seclude yourself with a curtain (to finally read that book you have been trying to finish for months) or there are sofas and bean bags were you can truly make yourself at home and socialise, all whilst in a fluffy bathrobe and slippers.

SPA Social is definitely a different approach to anything we’ve experienced before; you can experience treatments solo, book couples days or even book a group slumber spa.

So if you’re in need of a weeknight re-boot or just a re-boot in general, we advise making your way to SPA Social. You’ll wonder how you ever made it through a week without it.

House of Coco talked taking risks, never sitting still and the faith needed for a total rebrand with Lisa Johnson of Carmela Weddings...HOC: So Lisa, we’ve timed this interview for the launch of your new brand, which is stunning! Tell us about that and we’ll work backwards from there?..LJ: We’ve been working on the rebrand since November and I’m so excited that it’s time to show everyone! The hardest bit of it all, and the bit I’m most proud of, is that we’re changing the brand completely. We had to really think about our ideal client and zero in on who they are. Once we did that it meant we were cutting out 95% of clients! What we’re left with is this tiny percentage of brides but that small percentage of brides should hopefully just come to us. There’s nobody else doing what we do!..HOC: So tell us the vision for the new Carmela Weddings?..LJ: Our target is the couples that want really stylish, design led, much cooler than usual, luxury weddings. Instead of the Dorchester-style, very traditional and luxury event we’re still doing luxury but we’re not touching grand hotels, bunting or village halls. It’s the Shoreditch loft kind of warehouse brides. that we work with. We keep getting people asking for something different. They want a warehouse wedding, they have the money and they are usually super creative. They are my kind of people! My brides probably won’t be wearing the big dress, they’ll probably wear bridal separates. They will probably look like Solange Knowles did in a jumpsuit. They are my kind of brides...HOC: You mentioned this was a total brand change. How did you come to this?..LJ: I’ve been running this business, with my husband Sam for 3 years. Last year I was getting a bit disillusioned with the kinds of weddings I was doing and always being budgeted down! We didn’t really enjoy doing the more ‘traditional weddings’ but the few different weddings we did were really enjoyable. We had thought that, while this style of wedding is what we like, that not many brides would like it. But we did our market research and it turns out that there are people out there who want this! We decided we can still do what we love and run a successful business. While there are planners out there who do the odd really cool city wedding, there’s no-one who specialises in it that you can look up if that’s what you wanted. Our couples are just like us, we like nice hotels but Mondrian not Claridges, Street Art over fine art. I think we’re the only husband and wife wedding planning team in the UK!..HOC: For those of us who have not planned a wedding, or planned a wedding without professionals, can you tell us how you work?..LJ: There are three stages that we tend to start working with couples in:.1. Right at the beginning; This tends to be with couples who know what they want but also know that they are too busy to create their special day. We’ll give them full wedding planning services..2. We work with a number of couples who have organised their wedding but then realise how much is involved half way through!.3. Then we get the people right at the end who realise, especially if its in a marquee or a warehouse, how much there is to sort out on the day and that they can’t do it!.It used to be just big weddings that a wedding planner would work on but we do weddings for thirty people. It’s more people with a good budget but without the time to organise it. You don’t always need a huge budget, a wedding planner can help you maximise your budget as we know the right people and also the pitfalls of planning a wedding!..HOC: So, if you’ve been running this business for 3 years what were you up to before that?..LJ: Hah! That’s a long, long story! My path to wedding planning has been a rollercoaster. I come from a background where nobody really went to university so when I was 28 I decided it was time to get a degree and I completed both a degree in law and then an Masters in HR, through distance learning, while working full-time! Before that I was acting and doing TV presenting and I also worked in investment banking! I was a complete party animal and out with the rest of the team in Central London until late and then straight back to work at the bank the next day!.I then had my twins, who are now 4. I didn’t know much about children (sometimes I think I still don’t!) and I initially thought that I’d just go back to work in Canary Wharf! No chance. In fact, I went back to work as an Events Manager and Exec assistant as a contractor doing a strictly 9-5 job when they were 5 months old. However, I’m one of these people who always has to be doing something and this wasn’t enough so I started this business on the side and it’s taken off! I’m still a contractor and work for another company as well...HOC: Wow, it’s great to meet GirlBosses who have tried their hand at a lot of things on their journeys. Do you feel that your experiences have prepared you for Carmela Weddings? ..LJ: Everything I’ve ever done has been academic, I love exams! But I’ve got this weird creative side that comes out. For instance, I love writing and I’ve written for a few magazines before as one-offs. I’ve dabbled in pretty much everything creative but when this came along all the things that I’m good at came together! I use the Law constantly with contracts for brides and everything they need me to look over. I use everything, even the exec assistant experience as it has really helped me project manage anything now. I’m a trained celebrant as well and that’s the acting coming out...HOC: That’s amazing! Do you feel that couples, especially brides get pressured into a lot of things on their wedding days? ..LJ: I really believe that there needs to be no formula or rules for weddings. Brides come to me and say ‘I really don’t want to do a first dance’ and ‘I don’t want a top table, but I have to’. You don’t have to do anything! Most weddings end up being the same and that’s almost expected. You could buy 6 different magazines in a 3 year period and they would all have the same information in them!.I wish we were more like the US as they are really on trend and I want their stuff to come over here, they are so out there and it’s how it should be be. People say that they don’t want an ‘alternative’ wedding because in their heads they think of the obvious alt bride tattooed look, but you don’t have to go down that route! You can have an alternative wedding that’s just you. It’s just another genre that people feel they have to fit into...HOC: We imagine that your wedding was pretty ‘alternative’? ..LJ: We had a 1950s style wedding, we did it in a way that it was a bit different. It was cool and retro, not everything matched! In fact, Sam planned all of our wedding as I has 12 other weddings in that year to plan. He was amazing, even spending 5 hours on our wedding day setting up the vineyard with his best man! We got married in Malta and, for Malta it was a wedding unlike any other! We didn’t have a first dance, we had a dance to Mr Brightside with everyone up and dancing. We didn’t throw the bouquet, we gave it to the couple who had been married the longest. My bridesmaids were Sam’s friends because all of my husband’s best friends are girls and mine are men so we just mixed it around a bit!..HOC: Sounds amazing, you also arrange weddings in Malta don’t you?..LJ: Yes, I’m maltese so I often organise destination weddings for UK brides there. It really helps to have someone in the UK who can speak to them face to face and make it all happen. You can get some amazing value for money in Malta, some of our weddings that would have cost £60k here but only cost £20k there!..HOC: We’re really interested in how you market your business?..LJ: To celebrate our new branding I’m just about to send all the bloggers and magazines a little gift! I’ve defined an advertising budget and where I’m going to use it this year. In terms of marketing I’ve also worked hard on my SEO to get it up from page 52 for ‘Surrey Wedding Planner’ and now I’m on page 1! I think it’s also important to blog a lot!.I’m also planning to work on instagram. That’s where I think my brides are; they are really visual. We have a business instagram (@carmelaweddings ) and Sam’s instagram (@stanleyjohnno) and the content of both is generally just a curated diary of where we go as we hope our couples relate to that. They are us, in a way!..HOC: How do you and Sam find working together? ..LJ: We love it! He has another job as well and it’s great when we work together as we get to spend time together too. We complement each other so well. It’s quite fun working together, any time we do something together we just end up having a laugh...HOC: Do you have any dream weddings you’d like plan? ..LJ: I’d love to do a wedding at MC Motors. That would be my ideal wedding! Maybe someone who wants a Scandi look, giant edison bulbs, something different that I can really use my imagination on!..HOC: Finally, do you have any advice for any of our wannabe girl bosses out there? ..LJ: Life is really short and you need to make the most of it. I believe that you can achieve anything you aim to do. Don’t ever not do something out of fear or out of worry of failure. It might fail, my business might fail! You can never know for sure that there are enough brides out there to drive your business, for instance. But you give it the best shot you can!
