What inspired your transition from the fast-paced world of startups like Ocado to the serene realm of skincare with Anara?

Launching my own skincare brand has been a dream of mine since I was a teenager. Everything about a beautiful skincare routine delights me. It’s been a consistent feel-good part of my life and my 5 minutes of calm at the start and end of each day. When my skin is nourished, healthy, and looking radiant, I feel set to take on the day. It’s this feeling of calm and empowerment that I wanted to share with the world.

Working for such a wonderfully inspiring startup taught me so much about launching a customer-centric business based on honesty and integrity, and in many ways, my time at Ocado gave me the courage to take this path forward to starting my own business.

Could you share some insights into the holistic ethos of self-care that underpins Anara Skincare and how it sets your brand apart in the industry?

Skincare has always been an extremely powerful part of my life. It’s been a consistent feel-good regardless of what else was happening in my life. It’s my personal time to reflect and reset. It was this special feeling, filled with love, that I wanted to bring to life with Anara Skincare. It is, therefore, extremely important to me that each product in the range not only gives your skin all the nourishment it needs to age beautifully and gracefully but also delights your senses and brings you a sense of calm and well-being.

With an emphasis on well-aging, how do you approach the formulation of products to ensure they cater to diverse skin types and ages?

Diversity and inclusivity are the foundations upon which Anara Skincare was built. It was always my desire that my products should be loved by as many people as possible, regardless of skin type, life stage, or life choices. I had a very long list of criteria that each product had to meet before I was willing to sign it off.

Each and every ingredient chosen to be part of an Anara product had to have well-aging benefits, but overlaying this was ensuring that they could all be used on sensitive skin, around your eye area, and also during pregnancy. Our products, of course, went through the official testing process, but in addition to this, they were tested for over 1 year by a wide variety of people to ensure inclusivity.

Can you walk us through the process of sourcing high-quality, plant-based active ingredients from around the world for Anara Skincare products?

I was very fortunate to find the most amazing formulation company very early on after I made the decision to build Anara Skincare. They are very well-aligned with my values and understood my vision immediately.

As a company, they also only work with ethical suppliers and producers of raw ingredients. In sourcing the ingredients, we always ensure we use the Organic version of an ingredient if this is available and where this is not possible we will always choose the highest quality ingredient from one of their reputable and known suppliers.

As the entire range is certified by the Vegan Society and approved as Cruelty-Free under the Leaping Bunny Programme, our suppliers are also proactively and independently monitored to ensure that our products adhere to their strict criteria.

The testimonials on your website are glowing. How do you maintain such high customer satisfaction levels, and how does customer feedback influence your product development?

I am truly delighted by all the love the range has been receiving by customers and also by the beauty community. It’s only been 6 months since we launched and it’s truly wonderful to see so many repeat customers already.

Customer satisfaction is of utmost importance to me, and I believe that having an honest and transparent approach assists in getting this level of loyalty. Feedback and testing have always and will always be paramount to our product development process. Before launching the range it had been tested for a long period of time by a diverse cross-section of people and their feedback was extremely important to the process.

Your products are designed for multi-use. Could you elaborate on the benefits of this approach and how it aligns with the ethos of simplicity and efficacy?

The concept of multi-use has always resonated with me. It allows simplicity in a beauty routine and also enables products to be used and enjoyed at their freshest and without wastage. Our entire range is multi-use and multi-functional as well. Each product not only supports various aspects of the well-aging process but they can all be used around your delicate eye area, your face, and your neck.

What challenges did you face during the four years of research, education, and exploration that went into creating Anara Skincare, and how did you overcome them?

There were challenges that were expected during this process, such as ensuring the products met the long list of criteria I had set out to achieve – a minimum of 99% Natural Origin, Vegan, Cruelty-Free, For all skin types including sensitive skin, Pregnancy Friendly, Halal Friendly, Gluten-Free, High Organic Content, overlaid with ensuring that the natural origin products that were used to fragrance the products truly did delight the senses.

Alongside this, we had the added challenge of being faced with the pandemic and all the uncertainties that came with it. There were also huge price increases and supply issues that occurred during the process as a result of the trying times we all faced.

I learned the art of patience during this process but also used a lot of the skills I had gained earlier in my career with regards to being flexible and finding innovative solutions as challenges occurred.

Sustainability is a growing concern in the beauty industry. How does Anara Skincare address environmental sustainability in its formulation, packaging, and overall ethos?

Sustainability is at the heart of Anara Skincare. It was the basis of every conversation we had during the creation of the brand. As mentioned above, we always ensure our ingredients were ethically and sustainably sourced. All products are packaged in glass bottles and jars which can be recycled as part of your household recycling scheme.

Our recyclable outer cartons and marketing material carry the FSC forest management certification which confirms that the forest is managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of the local people.

We are and will always continue to look for beautiful and sustainable options for our packaging. As an example, our metal spatulas that come with our moisturiser and balm are packaged in glassine bags, which are an eco-friendly alternative to plastic packaging. They are created from 100% biodegradable and sustainable smooth, glossy material, so they keep our spatulas clean and hygienic whilst helping the planet too.

As someone deeply involved in the beauty industry, what are your thoughts on the evolving trends and consumer preferences in skincare, especially post-pandemic?

The move to a simpler, more sustainable skincare routine alongside people being more aware of what is included in their products align perfectly with our values as a brand. These factors have always been important to me and therefore when I started the process to build Anara Skincare in 2019, pre-pandemic, my vision was already well-aligned to what we are seeing as the current consumer preferences, including a move to multi-use products.

I do, however, feel that there is still some way to go to have full transparency, as the beauty industry isn’t regulated and terms such as natural, organic, and clean are being used without strict rules in place, which can be very confusing for a consumer who doesn’t necessarily fully understand the INCI (ingredient list).

The Anara Experience is said to bring magic to the start and end of one’s day. Could you share some anecdotes or stories that highlight the transformative power of your products in customers’ lives?

I always wanted my brand to be more than just another skincare brand. I wanted it to be a whole experience with love and care at every touch point. This includes every step in creating the products but also every interaction with our customers.

It truly delights me when customers tell me how the products make them feel.

One customer sent an email to say that she feels like she is entering her own personal spa every time she dispenses the products. She then went on to tell me that she had been having a tough year and thanked me for bringing some joy into her life. Before ordering she had messaged through with some questions so it was nice to build a rapport with her.

We often receive comments about how beautiful the packaging is and how wonderful and uplifting the products smell.

The word glowing is used a lot in feedback which really makes me very happy.

I recently received a request from a customer who loved our Radiance Moisturiser so much that she ordered 5 jars to gift to her bridesmaids at her Hen Party. She requested if we could pack them individually in our gift boxes and include our freeze-dried rose petals as she loved the unboxing experience and wanted them to experience the same delight.

How do you envision the future of Anara Skincare evolving in terms of product offerings, innovation, and market presence?

I would absolutely love to add more products to the range and some of these are already in discussion or have started the formulation process. It’s early days in terms of the formulation process so I can’t divulge too much, but I would love to add products that are a hybrid between skincare and makeup and also possibly some body care products as well. I really want to focus on products that can be used and enjoyed on a daily basis to complement our current range.

Innovation is at the heart of Anara Skincare, so we are always on the search for the most wonderful and effective plant-based products that help you age beautifully and gracefully.

In terms of market presence, my desire is to build a loyal community of customers that appreciate luxurious products that contain the most beautiful ingredients. I would love Anara Skincare to be known for its ability to provide radiance and happiness in your life. The word Anara is the combination of the word ‘Anar’ which means radiant In Arabic and the word ‘Nara’ which means happy in Greek.

Your background includes co-founding a mobile beauty service. How did your experience with MILK Wellbeing inform your approach to founding Anara Skincare?

Whilst my time at Ocado gave me a lot of experience in the retail industry and with working with a well-funded startup, my journey as Co-Founder for MILK Wellbeing truly taught me what it is to build a small business from scratch, where you are accountable for every aspect and every decision made. It also enabled me to live my passion of beauty and was my first true work experience within the beauty industry. I believe it gave me the perfect stepping stone and the confidence to launch Anara Skincare, and to finally bring my lifelong dream to fruition.

In what ways do you incorporate principles of inclusivity and accessibility into your brand, ensuring that Anara Skincare is suitable for people of all skin types, ages, and lifestyles?

As I touched upon earlier, my desire was always to make Anara Skincare inclusive in the true sense of the word – to be suitable across all skin types, including sensitive skin and for use around your eye area. I wanted the range to appeal and to be suitable for all genders, all life stages including pregnancy and menopause and across all lifestyle choices including Vegan and Halal.

I didn’t want you to have to worry whether the products were suitable for you, I just wanted you to be able to enjoy the Anara Experience. It was, therefore, a very long and complicated process to ensure each product in the range met this very long list of criteria.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to break into the beauty or skincare sector, based on your own journey with Anara?

I would say first and foremost, learn as much as you can before embarking on the journey. Find the right partners to work with that truly understand and align with your vision. Be willing to be flexible without compromising on your values. Be truly transparent because customers deserve to know what they are putting on their skin.

And last but by no means least follow your heart and don’t be scared to take a few risks. Creating and running your own business is a lot of hard work and I think you have to truly love and believe in your product and yourself to overcome the challenges.

The packaging of Anara Skincare products is often praised for its luxurious feel. How do you balance aesthetics with sustainability when designing your packaging?

The packaging is a very important part of the brand. I always said that I wanted luxury to meet nature. I wanted you to get that wonderfully special feeling that you get when you buy one of the well-known luxury brands.

Your products aim to deliver a sensory experience. How do you ensure that the fragrance and texture of each product align with your brand’s vision and values?

This truly was the most challenging process as we do not use artificial fragrances or other artificial ingredients in our products (apart from a small quantity of a gentle preservative where required), which often give products their scents and textures. It was a long journey of exploration, testing, and of endless iterations to find the perfect combination of ingredients to delight the senses, whilst also adhering to our other long list of criteria.

We use a variety of gentle essential oils to give our products their uplifting scents. A couple of examples are Rose Otto and Mandarin Orange, both of which also have their own beautiful skin nurturing properties.

Collaboration seems to be a recurring theme in your journey, from working with scientists to launching MILK Wellbeing. How do you approach collaboration, and how has it contributed to the success of Anara Skincare?

I believe that collaborating with the right partners, who completely align with your vision and your values is the key to success in any business and especially for a small startup. I had decided from the start of my journey in creating Anara Skincare that I wanted to work with experts in their field, who were as proud and passionate about their craft as I am about my business.

I think it’s also important to realize that you can’t do everything single-handed. My long career has taught me what I am good at and what I love the most, so those things I keep hold of and for the other tasks, I find people who can do them far better and more efficiently than I could. I am working with a mixture of sole traders, small and large companies and I find this balance works very well for me.

As a founder, what are some of the most rewarding moments you’ve experienced on your journey with Anara Skincare?

Truly every milestone has been rewarding. From signing off each formulation, to seeing the design of the logo and packaging come to life, to seeing my products on my website finally ready for sale. They all were such special and memorable moments.

However, if I had to choose just one aspect it would be the response I have received from the beauty industry and customers. The love and passion with which the range has been received in the real world is completely overwhelming and it fills me with gratitude. It has been the biggest honor to win 7 prestigious beauty awards for the range less than 6 months after launch.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

My biggest passion outside of the world of beauty is travel and I have been fortunate to have traveled extensively in my life. There are a few places on my bucket list and top of the list is Vietnam and Cambodia. I would also really love to visit Australia.

What’s your go-to quote when you are lacking motivation?

There are many positive quotes that I love, but one of my favorites is “Don’t wait for the magic to happen. Make the magic happen”. A very special person in my life used to say this to me a lot when I was a child and it has always stuck with me.

Finally, what legacy do you hope Anara Skincare will leave in the beauty industry, and what mark do you aspire to leave as its founder?

My hope is that Anara Skincare will be a wonderful example showing that it is possible for luxury and nature to truly blend whilst being inclusive in the true sense of the word.

I really want to be known and remembered as a Founder who truly followed her heart to build a business that bought radiance and happiness to the world.

Choosing gemstones and envisioning the technical process while translating ideas onto paper through drawings.

In the heart of sunny Redondo Beach, California, a passion project turned revolutionary brand was born: See Sea. With a vision to seamlessly integrate waterproof jewelry into daily life, See Sea emerged from the golden coasts of Southern California, serving as a beacon of modernity, luxury, and accessibility in the jewelry world.

At its core, See Sea is more than just a brand; it’s a testament to the unwavering commitment and love shared by its founders, a dynamic couple residing in the vibrant landscapes of Southern California. Their decision to embark on this journey together was not merely a business endeavor but a pledge to cherish See Sea with the same devotion they hold for each other. For them, jewelry isn’t just an accessory; it’s a reflection of one’s lifestyle and aspirations, a sentiment that resonates deeply within the brand’s ethos.

With meticulous attention to detail, See Sea crafts each piece using surgical stainless steel or superior materials, adorned with a lavish layer of gold, rose gold, or platinum. Despite the unparalleled quality, See Sea remains committed to fair pricing, eschewing traditional markups to ensure that luxury is accessible to all. Every item undergoes rigorous examination and packaging by the dedicated team before making its way to the customer, ensuring excellence with every purchase.

Yet, beyond exquisite craftsmanship lies a profound commitment to sustainability. See Sea is not just a brand; it’s a steward of the environment, prioritizing the health of our planet and oceans. With 100% recyclable materials and eco-friendly packaging, See Sea embodies the principles of sincerity and transparency, delivering not just products but genuine value to its customers.

In a world where style meets sustainability, See Sea stands as a shining example of innovation and conscientiousness, embodying the spirit of Southern California and illuminating the path towards a brighter, more sustainable future for all.

What inspired you to start See Sea, and how did your journey begin?

My journey began in our house’s garage. See Sea started as “Garagepreneurs”, where my husband and I set up our work desks, laptops, and storage space in the garage of our home in Los Angeles. So, you can say that one of our inspirations was the famed Silicon Valley Garagepreneurs culture, except that we were not engineers nor based in San Francisco. However, we believe we shared the following: a vision, ideas to execute, and a non-stopping drive to constantly inspire each other.

Can you share a bit about your background and how it influenced the creation of See Sea?

I studied art and design in college and worked as a full-time graphic designer for many years. On the other hand, I value practicality and always enjoy solving problems. Therefore, I not only wanted to create things that are aesthetically appealing but also able to meet people’s needs and solve their concerns. As a result, we founded See Sea.

What sets See Sea apart from other jewelry brands in the market, particularly in terms of design and sustainability?

We pride ourselves as one of the very few front-runners of the waterproof jewelry brands, and the only one of its kind located on the West Coast. Our designs are inseparable from the differentiated Californian vibe and look. Our success and goals are based not only on designs but also on materials, practicality, and, importantly, environmental sustainability.

Our stainless steel materials are long-lasting and 100% recyclable, and the PVD coating process is safe for the environment, employees, and users. The process takes place in a sealed vacuum system, producing no waste or harsh chemicals. Our truest belief is that everyday jewelry should be made of waterproof and stainless steel materials. Gold, silver, and platinum are costly to recycle and produce, and brass/copper and other low-cost metals often cause allergic reactions in the human body. We believe that we have the right product for our future and our environment.

How do you infuse the essence of Southern California into your jewelry designs?

Yes! There is truly nothing more unique than Southern Californian culture. As the first and biggest waterproof jewelry brand in California, we differentiate our pieces by embracing the liberal, diverse, and carefree Californian culture. Every day our team observes and works with nature-inspired elements, beach vibes, bohemian influence, surf and skate culture, celestial themes, ethnic and indigenous diversity, minimalist elegance, and more.

Could you walk us through the process of creating a piece of jewelry at See Sea, from concept to production?

Everything starts from our headquarters, located in the South Bay, Los Angeles. From early sunrise, our team goes through hundreds of design concept sketches, drawn following our inspiration and philosophy. We refine the initial sketches, paying attention to color, texture, proportion, and balance. After the final sketch is approved and voted by our team, we begin prototyping, using a 3D model and printing, to evaluate and adjust before production. And of course, material selection is the easiest part of the process. We go waterproof.

The production team conducts one more quality assurance and inspection before beginning production and PVD coating. Packaging, presentation, and merchandising are also a significant part of the process, as See Sea operates five physical locations other than the online store. Communication between the production and the retail team is key, as we synchronize our physical locations and our online shop to distribute and market the new pieces and finally deliver them to our customers.

How do you ensure the durability and longevity of your jewelry pieces, especially considering their waterproof nature?

All our team, including myself, of course, wears all our jewelry to test its durability and longevity. The team usually notices any issues first. We test our waterproof pieces while jogging, swimming, doing yoga, at the gym, hiking, surfing, skiing, and in all sorts of environments and activities that the West Coast offers year-round. Our waterproof jewelry has performed fantastically against any tests so far.

What challenges did you face while establishing See Sea, and how did you overcome them?

We launched our site at the end of 2019, and we planned our business operations until early 2020, when COVID hit the world. You can imagine our dismay, as the world seemed upside down, right after my husband and I quit our jobs to dedicate full-time to See Sea. With basically everyone’s future uncertain, it was truly the greatest first challenge we faced as a business.

We had to sketch out our business plans from scratch, as retail events, shopping centers, customer behavior, and lifestyle were reshaped by the pandemic. But with challenges and risks, we also saw new, unique opportunities in a changed world. We focused on online shopping and the gradually increasing pre-pandemic traffic.

While challenging and frightening in the beginning, we overcame our first test step by step. There have been many more challenges, and it has not been easy. But at the same time, it has been incredibly rewarding and exciting as well, and we do not plan to stop anytime soon. A message that we also want to leave for current and aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere.

Can you tell us about a particularly memorable moment or experience you’ve had since starting See Sea?

There are so many memorable moments that I feel tempted to write ten full pages about. The most memorable one would be when I first created the website for See Sea and had our first small batch of inventory ready, but we had no idea when or how we could receive the first order.

And then we did! I do not remember which piece it was. But I was so excited and amazed by the first order that I nearly jumped off my chair. We meticulously packaged the product and shipped it as the most valuable treasure in the world, and we checked the tracking information every hour until it got delivered.

How do you balance the artistic and business aspects of running a jewelry brand like See Sea?

Everything starts with people and communication. We need both sides to work together to run our brand. Hiring the right team members for the right roles has been one of the most challenging but at the same time, the most fulfilling achievements at See Sea. While the artistic team is essential to initiate our inspiration, conceptualization, and design, we need the business team to carry out and execute their vision accurately and timely. Making sure that they understand each other and work together has been the key to synergy and growth within See Sea.

What do you hope people feel or experience when they wear See Sea jewelry?

We aspire for every wearer of See Sea to experience comfort, confidence, and worry-free elegance. With our commitment to longevity and tarnish-free quality, individuals can trust that their jewelry will endure. Our goal is to empower wearers to showcase their cherished pieces while seamlessly embracing an outdoor, active lifestyle—without the constraints of costly and fragile materials.

How does See Sea integrate eco-conscious practices into its operations beyond just recyclable packaging?

All our stores have a recycling program where our customers are welcome to drop off their own broken/tarnished jewelry at our stores, and we have them recycled at local recycling centers in Los Angeles.

And of course, our waterproof materials are deliberately chosen for their recyclability, providing a sustainable and cost-effective option for jewelry. We avoid copper and brass due to their lack of hypoallergenic properties and tendency to tarnish quickly, leading to frequent replacements and more waste.

Could you share any upcoming projects or collections that customers can look forward to?

We have an array of upcoming projects and collections. Among them is our new men’s jewelry line. With rising demand, it complements our waterproof materials and fits the trend towards casual and streetwear fashion.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to start their own sustainable fashion brand?

Embarking on the initial step can often be the most challenging. To those hesitating at the crossroads, we recommend embracing the Californian attitude: cast aside worries, take that crucial first step, and continue the journey with confidence.

How does See Sea engage with its community, both locally in Southern California and globally?

We have an experienced and very active social media team to continually engage with the online community. The waterproof jewelry users are still a growing audience. The trend is ever-increasing, and once caught on, our customers have been faithful to the trend. All our physical locations constantly host special events and promotions to keep the local Los Angeles community connected with the brand.

We also receive online forums from our website related to any questions for our pieces or design suggestions. These are not just from California or the United States but globally as well.

In what ways do you think jewelry can be a reflection of one’s lifestyle and aspirations, as you mentioned earlier?

Jewelry is more than just adornment. It can also be a reflection of one’s identity, achievements, values, and lifestyle. The modern customer carefully selects and wears jewelry that resonates with them on a personal level. This is the area in which we believe See Sea can best serve our customers: the waterproof brand that delivers the Californian worry-free but beautiful minimalist looks, with eco-conscious materials.

Can you share any customer stories or testimonials that have touched you or reinforced your vision for See Sea?

We introduced a necklace featuring a larger pearl pendant alongside a smaller one, elegantly united on a single chain. A touching revelation came from a customer who shared that upon laying eyes on it, an instant connection with her daughter arose. It became clear to us that, beyond being a mere accessory, our jewelry carries profound sentimental value. Each piece has the power to symbolize significant moments, relationships, and milestones in a person’s life.

How do you stay inspired and creative in your designs, especially with the ever-evolving trends in fashion?

Remaining abreast of the latest fashion trends, we avidly scour fashion magazines, delve into influential blogs, and explore social media platforms where designers and influencers showcase their creations. Yet, we are attuned to the fact that not everyone identifies as a fashionista; many seek enduring, versatile pieces suitable for all occasions. Consequently, we reserve a specific percentage of our designs for timeless, everyday styles.

What role do you see See Sea playing in the broader conversation about ethical and sustainable fashion?

We firmly believe that we will be playing a leading role. Most jewelry throughout history has been produced by unnecessarily costly materials that caused conflicts and environmental neglect.

While fine jewelry is and will be an irreplaceable part of fashion, semi-fine jewelry, specifically waterproof jewelry, will be leading the jewelry industry, as customers become more eco-conscious and embrace the comfortable yet active fashion trends.

What are your long-term goals or aspirations for See Sea as a brand?

We are on a mission to globally deliver our waterproof brand to all customers and share awareness of its superior materials, design, and eco-friendliness. While attaining sustainability and ethical practices, we aim to keep our artistic excellence and creativity. Through our constant innovation and devotion to both our online and in-person shops, we plan to remain not just a Californian brand but a globally recognized one, with a constant emphasis on customer engagement and the social impact of our products.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

While many visitors opt for iconic attractions like Hollywood and the Santa Monica Pier when in LA, we strongly suggest exploring more intimate, lesser-known gems cherished by locals, specifically the South Bay area, where our headquarters are located.

Among our favorites is the Point Vicente Lighthouse in Rancho Palos Verdes. As the sun sets during the cooler months (though truth be told, it’s never truly cold here), the horizon transforms into a breathtaking canvas of rich purples, intense coral pinks, fiery reds, and peachy oranges. Against the backdrop of the ocean and cityscape, this spectacle offers one of the most awe-inspiring views I’ve ever encountered.

Determined to fill this void, Ben embarked on a mission to create a brand that not only addressed these shortcomings but also embodied his passion for beautiful design and eco-conscious practices.

Drawing inspiration from a vibrant community of over 2,000 stationery enthusiasts, Ben honed in on the core principles of paper quality, usability, and affordability. Armed with this invaluable feedback, he set out to redefine the stationery experience, one sleek notebook at a time.

Join us as we delve into the inspiring tale of Ben, the creative force behind Scribble & Dot, and discover the magic that lies within the pages of his meticulously crafted notebooks…

Can you share the background story of how your journey as an entrepreneur began and led you to the creation of Scribble & Dot?

My entrepreneurial journey began at the age of 18 when I decided to leave school and launch a restaurant concession. However, the demanding schedule of long days and nights prompted me to explore other business opportunities.

During this period, I started selling accessories online through various marketplaces, diligently managing orders by dropping off parcels every morning and relying on multiple notebooks to keep track of business activities. Yet, I found that these notebooks never lasted the year. It was then that I envisioned creating a premium notebook that was both durable and pleasant to the touch, yet affordable compared to designer brands. Thus, Scribble & Dot was born.

What specific challenges with existing journals fueled your determination to start a conscious stationery brand?

I aimed to establish a conscientious stationery brand, a niche often overlooked by major players in the industry. My goal was to create a notebook with minimal waste, accompanied by eco-friendly box packaging. Additionally, in 2020, I made the decision to give back to the environment by supporting One Tree Planted. Each year, they plant trees based on our donations. I believe it’s crucial to give back, especially considering that paper is the primary material used in our books.

Engaging with a community of 2,000 stationery enthusiasts is impressive. How did this collaborative process shape the identity and values of Scribble & Dot?

Like many stationery enthusiasts, I was on the quest for the perfect notebook. However, I encountered numerous brands with faults like ink bleeding through pages, loose covers, and weak bindings, among others. It was a struggle to find a journal that met all my criteria: pockets, pen holders, no ink ghosting, and premium covers and designs. As someone who uses notebooks daily, I yearned for the joy of opening and using one, which fueled my determination to create Scribble & Dot.

In the early stages, what were some key insights or surprising moments that guided the direction of your brand?

The surprising moments were the customer feedback. We get messages every day from customers giving us great feedback and it pushes us to create more unique items.

Balancing paper quality, usability, and affordability is crucial. How do you ensure that each element aligns with your brand’s core values and mission?

These three aspects are crucial to our success. We test all our products and make sure we maintain an affordable price point whilst maintaining paper thickness and quality.

As the founder, what personal values and principles do you bring to the table in steering Scribble & Dot towards success?

We always listen to our customers’ feedback and adapt and make changes to our products every year. This has helped us grow and become the Scribble & Dot you see today.

Can you share a memorable experience or milestone that stands out in Scribble & Dot’s journey so far?

I feel a big memorable experience was the COVID lockdown. There was a huge rise in people starting journaling through these times and we received an influx of new scribblers sharing their designs and unboxing videos. It was a truly memorable time.

Your brand is described as offering “affordable luxury.” How do you define and maintain this delicate balance in your business model?

Providing affordable luxury comes at a price to us, but it’s our ethos and what we do. Regardless of the impact on margins, we want customers to have a truly amazing experience from the moment they open their Scribble and Dot box and unwrap the tissue paper to when the pen hits the paper. I want customers to be smiling through the whole unboxing experience.

What role does customer satisfaction play in your approach to designing and testing stationery products?

A huge role. Each year we collate all feedback and sit down and go through how we can improve our products and new designs. Customer feedback is very important, and I believe if we didn’t do this Scribble & Dot wouldn’t be here today.

Collaborations with artists seem to be a significant aspect of your brand. How do you select and work with artists to ensure their creations align with Scribble & Dot’s vision?

Connecting with artists and creatives from around the world to diversify our designs and champion individual talent by supporting small. A lot of artists bring something new to S&D, and we always encourage artists to reach out.

How do you incorporate sustainability into the production process of your stationery items, given the emphasis on natural resources?

Challenging traditional materials and finishing to ensure our stationery feels and looks fabulous for longer. We are conscious about climate change and are continually evolving our collections to ensure we reduce waste and find more sustainable solutions. Always being transparent with our customers and offering a mindful purchase choice.

Can you share a particular product or collection that holds a special place in your heart, and why?

The baby memory book we released this year is a special book. It took 1 year to design, and the artist Nicky Pasterfield created a beautiful keepsake for new mums.

As an entrepreneur, what advice would you give to aspiring individuals looking to start their own conscious and sustainable brands?

Begin building your brand as an environmentally responsible entity. Highlight your commitment to sustainability on your website, social media, and marketing materials. Authenticity is key, so make sure your actions align with your messaging.

In terms of design, how do you approach creating stationery that is both stylish and functional?

We follow our brand guidelines and test functionality to make sure it fits the needs of our customers.

What role do customer needs and desires play in the constant evolution of Scribble & Dot’s product offerings?

It’s vital we get customer feedback so we can make more great products.

Looking ahead, are there any exciting developments or new projects on the horizon for Scribble & Dot that you can give us a sneak peek into?

We are working on a DIY Recipe Journal that we are very excited to release very soon. An absolute kitchen essential.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Asia – I am passionate about wellness, and I have heard great things about Asia.

When lacking motivation, what’s your go-to quote?

“If you can believe you can achieve.”

Looking back since launching the brand, is there anything you would do differently?

I wish we launched in the USA sooner; the feedback has been amazing, and we are looking forward to continued growth in the US.

Lastly, how do you envision the future of Scribble & Dot in terms of its impact on the stationery industry and the broader community it serves?

I envision Scribble and Dot to move more into the high street and to see our products stocked in more retail outlets would be a great goal of ours.

In a world where every step counts, one family’s journey sparked a revolution in child safety and comfort. Meet Tommy, the visionary behind Little Yoga Socks, a tale born from the joys and challenges of parenthood.

With each slip and slide, Tommy and his wife felt the call to action, driven by a simple yet profound desire: to create a solution for young explorers everywhere. Join us as we delve into the inspiring narrative of Little Yoga Socks, where passion, innovation, and love for little adventurers intertwine to redefine the way children tread their paths…

What sparked the idea for Little Yoga Socks, and how did your personal experience as parents influence the decision to create a solution for slippery socks during playtime?

Little Yoga Socks emerged from a personal necessity. As parents to a curious baby and a highly active toddler, my wife and I often felt uneasy watching our children learn to walk or run in conventional slippery socks. We were torn between encouraging exploration and safeguarding against potential accidents in our home’s “dangerous” areas. While searching for grip socks for early walkers, we encountered generic designs with subpar quality and unreliable grip.

Frustrated by the lack of suitable options, we saw an opportunity to create a better solution not only for ourselves but also for other parents facing similar challenges. Our socks offer a dual benefit, instilling confidence in both children and their parents. Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers wearing our grip socks can move with assurance, free from the fear of slipping or falling. Meanwhile, those supervising them gain peace of mind, knowing that our socks provide reliable traction, reducing the risk of accidents and alleviating anxiety.

Can you share a specific anecdote or moment with your own children that served as a catalyst for turning the idea of grippy socks into a business venture?

As my little girl took her first steps, I witnessed her struggle with maintaining balance and often slipping. With a low glass table in the living room, I found myself constantly on edge whenever she neared it. While I wanted to foster her independence, the daily risk seemed unnecessary. I believed there had to be a safer way for her to explore the world with minimised injury risks. Conversations with other parents revealed shared concerns, and it became evident that quality grippy socks could offer a solution to many parents navigating the same challenges with their young children.

Little Yoga Socks is all about empowering little adventurers. How do you envision your product contributing to the confidence and joy of children as they explore the world around them?

Children are naturally curious and eager to learn about the world around them. However, the fear of slipping can sometimes hinder their confidence, especially when they’re just learning to walk. Our grip socks not only keep their feet warm and clean but also provide essential stability, minimising the risk of slipping. By offering this added support, our socks boost children’s confidence, allowing them to focus on exploring, experiencing, and playing more freely. With Little Yoga Socks, children can embark on their adventures with greater assurance, knowing that they have a reliable companion to keep them steady every step of the way.

As parents yourselves, what challenges did you face when looking for non-slip solutions for your children, and how does Little Yoga Socks address those challenges?

It was a frustrating experience. We encountered non-slip socks that lacked attention to detail—the designs were dull and overly simplistic, the quality left much to be desired, and the grip was insufficient. It felt like these socks were produced with minimal effort, prompting us to aspire to set a new standard and give this exceptional product the attention it deserves. To address these shortcomings, we established six key goals for our socks:

  • Exceptional Grip: We sought out a super strong sticky material that covers most of the sock’s bottom, ensuring effectiveness even after numerous washes.
  • Designs that kids love: Recognizing that children often resist wearing socks solely for warmth, we prioritized stylish, adorable designs that tell a story and ignite their imagination.
  • Premium Quality Materials: We committed to using only the finest materials to ensure durability and comfort.
  • Stay-On Socks: Our socks are designed to stay securely on their feet, providing peace of mind for both parents and little ones.
  • Versatility for Every Season: We created socks suitable for all seasons, allowing kids to enjoy comfort and safety year-round.
  • Eco-Friendly and Safe: We’re dedicated to using non-harmful materials and sustainable packaging, prioritizing the well-being of both children and the planet.

The focus on quality cotton blends for softness, breathability, and stretch sets Little Yoga Socks apart. Can you elaborate on how these features enhance the overall experience for both parents and kids?

The use of soft cotton blends ensures unparalleled comfort during indoor playtime and walking. Whether infants and toddlers are crawling around the living room or taking their first steps in the hallway, the softness of the fabric prevents any discomfort or irritation, allowing them to fully enjoy their activities without distractions. Breathability is crucial even indoors, especially during active play.

Cotton’s natural breathability allows air to circulate freely, keeping little feet cool and dry throughout their adventures. This not only enhances comfort but also helps prevent the development of odors, ensuring freshness even after long hours of play. Additionally, the stretchiness of the cotton blends provides the flexibility needed for various movements during indoor play and walking. It allows for unrestricted movement, enabling kids to move freely and confidently without feeling constrained by their socks.

This flexibility also contributes to their safety, reducing the risk of slipping or discomfort. By prioritising these features, Little Yoga Socks not only enhances the physical comfort and performance of both parents and kids during indoor playtime and walking but also promotes a more enjoyable and fulfilling experience overall.

Little Yoga Socks not only prioritize safety but also offer stylish designs. How do you believe the combination of safety and style contributes to a positive experience for young ones?

Combining safety with stylish designs in Little Yoga Socks ensures a positive experience for young ones by providing both practical benefits and aesthetic appeal. Safety features like non-slip grips offer peace of mind to parents, while stylish designs make wearing socks fun for kids. This combination encourages consistent wear, ensuring ongoing protection during play and activities, while also fostering independence and self-expression from a young age. With the added confidence from safety features, kids feel empowered to explore and move freely.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of seeing Little Yoga Socks become a solution for parents and a source of joy for children?

The most rewarding aspect of witnessing Little Yoga Socks become a solution for parents, grandparents, nannies, and a source of joy for children is seeing the positive impact it has on families’ lives. Knowing that our product provides practical benefits such as safety and comfort, which in turn allows parents to have peace of mind while their children play and explore, is incredibly fulfilling.

Additionally, seeing children excitedly engage with our socks, whether it’s through their playful designs or the fun they have while wearing them, brings immense joy. Being able to contribute to moments of happiness and comfort in families’ daily routines is truly gratifying and motivates us to continue creating products that enhance the lives of both parents and children.

How do you stay innovative in designing new sock styles that cater to the evolving tastes of both parents and kids?

Staying innovative in designing new sock styles for both parents and kids involves several key strategies. Firstly, we actively listen to customer feedback to understand their preferences and needs. Secondly, we keep an eye on emerging trends in fashion and child development. Additionally, we encourage creativity and experimentation within our design team.

Furthermore, my wife and I personally involve our own kids, asking for their opinions on new designs, ensuring that they resonate with children. Lastly, we remain flexible and adaptable, continuously iterating on our designs based on market feedback and changing trends. This multifaceted approach ensures that our sock styles are dynamic, engaging, and relevant to our customers.

Little Yoga Socks is described as a journey. Can you share a pivotal moment or achievement that marked a significant milestone in this adventure?

One pivotal moment in the journey of Little Yoga Socks was when we received our first heartfelt testimonial from a parent. This moment marked a significant milestone for us because it validated the purpose and impact of our product. Hearing how our socks brought comfort, joy, and safety to a child during their daily activities filled us with a profound sense of fulfilment and motivation to continue our mission. It was a reminder that even small gestures can make a big difference in the lives of families.

This moment fueled our passion and commitment to creating innovative, high-quality products that enrich the experiences of both parents and children. Another pivotal moment occurred when a renowned Canadian Podiatrist reached out to us, expressing her love for our socks and their quality.

Little Yoga Socks promotes safe and confident walking for toddlers. Can you share some success stories or testimonials from parents who have experienced the positive impact of your product?

Most of these stories echo the same sentiment: our socks make a tangible difference in their children’s walking and confidence. It’s heartening to hear consistent positive feedback from our customers, reinforcing the impact of our product on little ones’ development. Personally, I enjoy engaging with our customers directly. Keeping things personal and having genuine interactions with our buyers is important to me.

Beyond functionality, how do you believe the colorful and cute designs of Little Yoga Socks contribute to a child’s sense of self-expression and individuality?

While for adults, the primary purpose of grip socks may be functional, it’s essential to remember that for kids, the initial connection point is often the socks’ appearance. Little Yoga Socks’ colorful and cute designs serve as a bridge to engage children’s interest and imagination. These designs not only add flair to their outfits but also become a means for self-expression and individuality. By prioritising aesthetics alongside functionality, we create socks that resonate with children, fostering a positive relationship with their footwear and encouraging confidence in their unique style.

As founders, how do you balance the demands of entrepreneurship with the joys of parenting, and what lessons have you learned along the way?

Balancing entrepreneurship and parenting requires communication, teamwork, flexibility, and self-care. My wife and I learned to prioritize quality time with our family while also managing the demands of our business. By setting boundaries and adapting to changing needs, we strive to create a harmonious balance between work and family life.

Little Yoga Socks embraces the idea of letting kids be kids. In your opinion, how does this philosophy align with the broader conversation on childhood and parenting in today’s society?

That’s a great question! I believe that Little Yoga Socks’ philosophy of letting kids be kids aligns well with today’s parenting trends. It emphasizes the importance of allowing children to explore, play, and express themselves freely. This approach resonates with modern parenting, which prioritizes fostering independence, creativity, and confidence. By promoting comfort, safety, and self-expression through our designs, we empower children to embrace their individuality and enjoy their childhood to the fullest.

Can you share any upcoming plans or projects that Little Yoga Socks has in store for the future, as you continue to support little adventurers worldwide?

We’re currently working on some even cuter designs and expanding our selection at Little Yoga Socks. Plus, we’ll be introducing grip socks for bigger kids and exploring the possibility of offering them for adults too. Introducing Andrezza Valentin, a visionary contemporary artist and designer hailing from the vibrant streets of São Paulo, Brazil, now making waves in the bustling creative scene of New York City.

Andrezza’s journey is one of boundless creativity and unwavering passion. Fueled by a profound love for all things handmade and a relentless pursuit of artistic expression, she embarked on a quest to fuse her background in design and art with the meticulous craftsmanship of jewelry making. Thus, Paradise Feathers was born—a testament to her ingenuity and artistic prowess.

Having previously delved into the realm of large-scale sculptures and installations, Andrezza’s artistic evolution is a testament to her adaptability and resilience. While her earlier works embraced the transient nature of ephemeral materials, her foray into jewelry design offers a striking contrast, allowing her creations to endure the test of time while retaining their singular essence.

Influenced by the timeless principles of Bauhaus and the opulent allure of Art Deco, Andrezza’s designs embody a harmonious fusion of minimalist elegance and sophisticated allure. With a keen eye for geometric forms and a masterful blend of precious and non-precious materials, she crafts wearable sculptures that exude an aura of glamour and refinement.

Andrezza Valentin is not merely a designer; she is a storyteller, weaving narratives of beauty and intrigue with every meticulously crafted piece. Her creations beckon the wearer to embark on a journey of self-expression and empowerment, embodying the essence of modern luxury and artistic innovation.

In the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary design, Andrezza stands as a beacon of inspiration—an artist unafraid to push boundaries, challenge conventions, and carve her own path towards creative greatness.

Can you share the story behind the creation of Paradise Feathers and how your journey as a contemporary artist led you to jewellery design?

After moving from Brazil to the US, I found myself searching for a new way to make art. The change of countries, culture, and the realities of living in NY with very limited space forced me to rethink my work as an artist. It made me think of sculpture and materials in a different way since my inspirations and environment were now very different. The approach to jewellery as sculpture or object of art was a seed planted by one of my friends and an amazing art curator, Cristina Candeloro, when we were still at the university. After one of her trips to London, she gave Stainless Steel a ring with the engraving – “Rings are small sculptures.” That was the first time I saw jewellery as an art object.

Your background involves large-scale sculptures and installations with ephemeral materials. How does this experience influence your approach to creating lasting and unique pieces in the realm of jewellery design?

Working with metal and everlasting materials serves as a counterpoint to my large-scale and ephemeral sculptures. Before, the choice of using ephemeral materials was intrinsic to my pursuit of materializing the experience of transience and longing for a moment that can’t be held forever. Jewellery, for me, is an evolution of that initial creative desire because it can be a memento, a reminder of a memory, an event, a feeling, or even a person.

Bauhaus and Art Deco are mentioned as significant influences in your work. How do these artistic movements inspire and shape your minimalist designs?

Before I became a fine artist, I studied graphic arts, which was my first introduction to design. My early influences as a designer were heavily influenced by Bauhaus’ holistic approach to creativity, which saw all expressions of design and art as equally important. Both Bauhaus and Art Deco aesthetics are heavily influenced by architecture, precision, and a relentless pursuit of simplification in terms of form, color, and materials. However, Art Deco brings luxury and glamour into the mix since it often combines bold colors, geometric lines with gold, diamonds, and high-end materials.

Can you elaborate on the concept of Paradise Feathers, and how does it reflect your artistic vision and personal ethos?

I created Paradise Feathers with the desire to create wearable art pieces that can be worn every day instead of being put away in a glass box to be admired but not touched. I wanted to create tactile objects that can be used as a channel for self-expression and as a statement of each person’s unique style. I believe everyone can be glamorous without a lot of effort. We just need to be very intentional about what we wear and don’t be afraid to not conform to trends.

Transitioning from large-scale artworks to small, wearable sculptures is a unique shift. What challenges did you face in adapting your creative process to a different scale, and how did you overcome them?

This transition happened over the course of years, so it wasn’t an abrupt change. However, having to create scale models and prototypes before actually building the final sculpture helped me reframe my thinking to work on a smaller scale for my jewellery pieces. The precision and patience that come with working on a small scale are still a constant learning process. I find jewellery less forgiving when it comes to mistakes. You have to be very mindful and precise whereas when working with ice or any other ephemeral materials, you don’t need the same rigor and precision because everything is changing every moment.

The combination of geometric shapes, clean lines, and a mix of precious and non-precious materials is a hallmark of your designs. How do you strike a balance between these elements to achieve the desired aesthetic?

The balance is very intuitive for me. The simplicity of the shape and the choice of materials are the most important decisions. If I decide to use a material that has textures like Rutilated Quartz or precious metals, I intentionally seek a counterpoint in the shape that brings a unique approach and structure to the piece.

How does your Brazilian background influence your artistic perspective, and in what ways does it manifest in the pieces you create for Paradise Feathers?

Brazil has a huge heritage in mining and stones. I’m just starting to scratch that surface. I always admired Brazilian Modernism, especially its expression in architecture and furniture design because of the unexpected use of organic materials and shapes, which make it very unique compared to Modernism in Europe or the US. I believe my interest in combining precious and non-precious materials is inspired by that.

Sustainability is a growing concern in the world of fashion and design. How do you approach sustainability in your creations, considering both the materials you use and the longevity of your pieces?

I cannot claim to be 100% sustainable, and honestly, nobody can. Greenwashing is a huge issue in the fashion industry, and because of that, I try to be as transparent as possible. I have very clear boundaries, especially in terms of materials. I only started using gold when I could be sure of its source, and the same goes for semi-precious stones. I’m still exploring the idea of using precious stones like diamonds because of the complexity to trace its origins. The size and shapes of my pieces sometimes force me to go for alternative materials like acrylic and soon glass. I’m also doing a lot of research on how to offset the impact of acrylic and ways to recycle it to minimize the environmental impact.

Your jewellery is described as “wearable sculptures of glamor and sophistication.” What emotions or experiences do you aim to evoke in the individuals who wear your creations?

I aim to evoke feelings of empowerment, confidence, and self-love through my creations. True glamour, to me, is the light that shines from within.

Can you share a memorable moment or story from your journey as a jewellery artist that has significantly impacted your approach to your craft?

It’s hard to pinpoint a moment, but being able to make my first ring from scratch, melting the metal, making the wire, shaping it, until its finished form was magical.

Collaboration often plays a vital role in the world of design. Have you collaborated with other artists or designers, and if so, how has it enriched your creative process?

I haven’t had the chance to collaborate with other designers or artists yet. I’ve done it in the past as a traditional artist and graphic designer. I know opportunities will come, and it is always fun to see how the work evolves and changes when you have another perspective brought into the fold.

In the fast-paced world of fashion, how do you ensure that your designs remain timeless and continue to resonate with your audience over the years?

I don’t try to pursue trends. I believe the endurance of my designs will come from the craft and my ability to maintain a continuous visual thread throughout my work, even when my style will naturally evolve over time.

Do you have a favorite piece from your collection, and if so, what makes it special to you?

I love every piece, but the Slab Bracelet is my favorite. I love the boldness of the shape, the combination of gold with acrylic. I believe that piece truly expresses my vision as an artist.

As a designer based in New York, how does the vibrant and diverse cultural scene of the city inspire or influence your work?

The energy, the cultural diversity, and especially the uniqueness of how people express themselves through fashion in NY are extremely inspiring. You see trends being created, fad, weird and clever combinations. Everything is possible and valid if you can pull it off. I love that freedom, and that carries through my work.

How do you approach the balance between functionality and artistic expression when creating pieces that are not only visually striking but also meant to be worn?

I wear all my pieces for a long period of time to make sure it is comfortable and truly wearable. I’m not interested in creating concept pieces that you can only look at, but they don’t really work in real life. I consider a piece done only when I can achieve the desired design and look while ensuring functionality.

Are there specific materials or techniques that you find particularly fascinating or challenging to work with in your jewellery designs?

I love metalforming. A lot of my pieces are handmade and formed by hand. Metalforming is a magical process for me because you transform a hard material into many different shapes through fire, pressure, tension.

How do you navigate the intersection of art and commerce in the world of jewellery design, ensuring your creations maintain artistic integrity while being accessible to a broader audience?

I took the approach of creating a collection that has different ranges of prices. The art jewelry category gives you more freedom to be more accessible because you were not expected to only use precious metals and stones. The playfulness of combining materials in my work allows me to keep the creative integrity and still be able to offer more accessible pieces.

With the ever-evolving landscape of fashion and design, how do you stay creatively inspired and continue to push the boundaries of your own work?

I always welcome the new, and I believe the ever-evolving landscape is an invitation to innovate and experiment. My inspiration comes from many different places, AI and virtual fashion to cinema, social media, and of course from familiar places like art and design.

Can you share insights into your creative process, from the initial concept to the final product? Are there rituals or routines that aid your creativity?

This is a quote from Tadao Ando that describes my process very well: “My hand is the extension of the thinking process – the creative process.” Sometimes I start a piece by sketching some initial ideas on my iPad, but quickly I move into prototyping it in brass and acrylic. I finally bought a laser cutter, which transformed my process.

I don’t need to worry about not getting this right the first time because I can easily iterate and improve the design, without having to spend a fortune or wait for days to receive a new piece. In my studio, I have a space where I concept, surrounded by books and references, and right next to it is my jewelry bench, plating, laser cutting. I can’t imagine myself working without being hands-on. I need to touch it and feel it to give it meaning and understanding.

What advice would you give to aspiring jewellery designers or artists who are looking to carve their niche in the competitive and dynamic world of contemporary design?

Be patient, be humble, trust your instincts but also know how to listen. I learn so much from observing and listening to people tell their journey as a jeweler and artist. We don’t need to do everything ourselves, and we don’t need to be perfect. I’m much more gentle and compassionate with myself as a jewelry designer than when I was working as a traditional artist. Probably age and experience taught me that perfection is not real and the most important is to love and enjoy what you do. The rest will fall into place over time.

  1. Tell us about the journey that led you to becoming a full-time artist…

My background is actually in Business Administration and Behavioral Economics; I’m what you could say, a numeric person. However, 24 years ago, I decided to pursue my actual passion: Art.

It all started with short courses until I joined Severine Fain’s Art Academy in Amsterdam, where I discovered my love for oil and acrylic, using them to share my stories on canvases.

The first exhibitions I did were collective and solo auctions to benefit various causes such as Habitat for Humanity projects, Japan’s Disaster Relief, and Latin American NGOs focused on helping children and single mothers. My art has a voice, and it was actually helping to support many causes that I feel strongly about.

In Basel, Switzerland, I had the chance to open my own art academy for children and adults, which was probably the biggest leap of faith I took toward becoming a full-time artist.

Life took me to live in Dubai for a few years, and it was there where my artist career experienced exponential growth. Soon enough, I was featured in renowned magazines, museums, biennials, ministries of culture, art fairs, books, and all sorts of huge international events.

All of a sudden, and without planning it, blessings kept knocking at my door, including ventures like getting into NFTs. My art has diversified, and along with it, the exposure and reach of my stories.

  1. Where did your love and interest in art come from?

I have always loved visiting museums and spending more than the normal amount of time on some artworks, examining the strokes of the brushes and the tiny details that mostly escape regular eyes.

I love color, lots of vibrant colors. And I have always been curious about the lives of famous artists and what inspired them when they were creating their artworks. If I don’t know the story, I imagine what it could be.

  1. How do you want people to feel when they see your work?

I have heard many things, but most of those who own one of my pieces say they do so because they feel identified with the emotion. They may have gone through a similar story, or they want to voice a desire.

  1. For anyone interested in becoming a full-time artist, what advice would you offer them?

I would tell them that it is definitely not easy, and sometimes it can be discouraging, but the satisfaction you get from making it on your own is priceless. Continue submitting your work to open calls, check out fairs, and participate in collectives as much as you can. Eventually, the breakthrough will come, and you will savor it when you least expect it.

  1. Talk us through an average day in your life…

I really enjoy waking up before the rest of my household and having a few hours to myself with my brush and canvas. Aside from cooking/eating breaks, I try to maintain the discipline of working between my laptop and studio for at least 8 to 10 hours a day. If I’m not traveling to an exhibition, that’s how it goes. Sometimes, I engage in photography, digital art, physical art, and pottery all in a single day, along with handling applications, answering an infinite amount of emails, and by the end of it, I’m exhausted but satisfied.

  1. What do you do when you are lacking creativity?

Every now and then, I do experience creative blocks. My way of dealing with them is to completely change the channel and read an appealing book. I love reading. By the end of it, not only have I learned something new, but the feeling to return to my paint is back.

My creativity is greatly affected by the stress of deadlines. But with an interesting book at hand, especially one focused on self-improvement, the chances of reducing stress are significant.

  1. How much has social media played a role in the success of your brand?

Social media has played a significant role; most of the events and networking take place between Instagram and Facebook.

  1. Our readers love to travel, what destinations are on your must-visit list?

I love traveling, and I do have a bucket list! Haha. My top five future destinations would be Japan, Vietnam, Chile, Brazil, and Argentina.

  1. What does self-care mean to you?

Self-care means taking care of yourself before taking care of everyone else. It means loving yourself as you would love the love of your life, cheering for yourself when you reach a goal, and being sympathetic to yourself when things don’t go as expected. It means never stopping learning how to improve your relationship with yourself.

Giuseppe Pastore is an Italian artist whose journey into the world of painting began unexpectedly, unfolding into a profound exploration of color, movement, and self-expression. From his initial encounter with a blank canvas to his evolution as a self-taught painter, Giuseppe’s artistic trajectory is marked by spontaneity, experimentation, and a deep-rooted passion for creation.

Inspired by the interplay between chaos and order, his vibrant compositions invite viewers to embark on a journey of introspection and interpretation. Through his distinctive style and unwavering dedication to his craft, Giuseppe continues to push the boundaries of his creativity, forging a unique artistic identity that resonates with audiences worldwide…

Can you tell us about the moment when you discovered your passion for painting and how it transformed from a chance encounter into a central part of your life?

It was an afternoon in 2010 when I found myself torn between going for a run or trying my hand at painting. Despite never having painted before, I had been intrigued by the idea of buying a canvas in the preceding days, yet hadn’t made the purchase. As I hesitated, my mother unearthed an old blank canvas, once belonging to my sister from her art school days. That day, I decided to paint, using the aged colors also belonging to my sister, now hardened and in need of thinning. Since then, driven by a compelling impulse, the need to paint has become a constant in my life. I’ve created over 250 paintings since that moment.

Your journey from studying Physics to becoming a self-taught painter is quite remarkable. How do you feel your scientific background influences your artistic process, if at all?

According to Leonardo da Vinci, “Art is science; it cannot be improvised and is not satisfied with indifferent and superficial approximations; on the contrary, it requires hard and systematic work.” I believe the scientific method has significantly influenced my approach to painting, particularly in the experimental phase of my early work. Subsequently, I’ve integrated acquired painting methodologies and techniques based on experiential learning. Just as in science, having a method has been fundamental to my artistic process, often involving unconventional tools such as DIY implements.

Your early works seem to explore themes of the infinite and depth. Could you delve into how these concepts emerged in your art and how they’ve evolved over time?

Themes of infinity and depth emerged spontaneously in my early works, such as “Opening” from 2012, where the concept of infinity is associated with depth. In other pieces like “T1” or “Lux Libera Nos,” infinity is depicted through repeated similar signs within the composition. Initially unplanned, the theme of infinity has evolved over time, transitioning into themes of movement in my recent oil paintings, characterized by geometrically unbounded motions as seen in “Tumulto.”

What role does spontaneity play in your creative process, particularly in your approach to action painting?

Identifying as an Action Painter, spontaneity is pivotal in my creative process. Almost all my paintings are gestural and spontaneous, often driven by the composition itself. This is particularly evident in my oil paintings, where canvases are laid horizontally and worked on from various angles. The application of color, often done with unconventional tools like spatulas, emphasizes movement and gesture. In this regard, my practice of traditional martial arts has also played a significant role.

The quote you’ve chosen from Khalil Gibran speaks to humility and the acceptance of ignorance. How does this philosophy resonate with you as an artist?

“I am ignorant of absolute truth. But I am humble before my ignorance and there lies my honor and my reward.” This quote resonates deeply with me as it underscores the humility required in both artistic and scientific pursuits. It acknowledges the relative nature of talent and the importance of continuous learning and growth. Embracing this philosophy allows artists to remain open to new possibilities and perpetually strive for improvement.

How do you balance instinct and deliberation in your artistic decisions, especially considering your transition from acrylics to mainly using oil paints?

Oil paints afford greater flexibility in reflection and adjustment compared to acrylics, which dry faster. Consequently, acrylic painting demands a more instinctive and swift approach, while oil painting allows for a more deliberate and thoughtful process. My transition from acrylics to oils has thus led to a shift towards more considered compositions, reflecting a balance between instinctive gestures and intentional decision-making.

As a self-taught artist, what challenges have you faced along your journey, and how have they shaped your artistic practice?

Being self-taught has allowed me to cultivate a unique perspective, less constrained by conventional artistic norms. However, it initially posed challenges in establishing authority within the art community and gaining recognition from traditional galleries. Instead, I’ve leveraged online platforms like Artfinder and Singulart to showcase my work. This journey has taught me to value originality and embrace diverse influences, shaping my practice into one that prioritizes personal expression over adherence to artistic conventions.

Your work seems to bridge the gap between chaos and order, with gestural movements meeting geometric themes. Can you discuss how you find harmony within this duality?

Chaos, often central to my paintings, should not be perceived negatively but rather as a dynamic force guided by underlying principles. While my compositions may appear chaotic, they are governed by intentional rules and harmonies developed over time. My expertise in color application allows me to create compositions that balance spontaneity with structure, evolving from geometrically precise forms to more fluid and dynamic arrangements.

Your art reflects a deep introspection and exploration of the self. What insights or revelations have you gained about yourself through your artistic endeavors?

Discovering my passion for painting later in life has been a revelation in itself, highlighting the unpredictability of personal discovery. Painting has provided me with a profound sense of satisfaction and fulfillment, offering a parallel avenue for creative expression alongside my scientific pursuits. Through this journey, I’ve come to appreciate the joy of creation and the inherent beauty of the artistic process.

How do you approach the concept of perfection in your art, especially considering the spontaneous nature of action painting?

Perfection, for me, is reached when I find myself satisfied with a painting, recognizing its inherent value and resonance. It’s not about achieving flawless execution but rather capturing a moment of creative fulfillment and resonance. Embracing the spontaneous nature of action painting allows me to appreciate imperfections as integral components of the artistic journey, each contributing to the unique character of the final piece.

Your paintings often seem to invite viewers to interpret and explore their own meanings. What do you hope audiences take away from experiencing your work?

I aim to provide viewers with a means of escape and introspection through my paintings, inviting them to immerse themselves in a world of color and movement. By offering space for personal interpretation, I hope to evoke emotions and spark contemplation, enabling viewers to find resonance and meaning within their own experiences.

How do you stay inspired and motivated, especially during periods of artistic block or self-doubt?

Fortunately, I haven’t experienced significant periods of artistic block or doubt. However, I find inspiration in classical music, particularly piano compositions by artists like Philip Glass, whose work resonates deeply with me. Additionally, immersing myself in nature and continuing my practice of traditional Japanese martial arts provides avenues for rejuvenation and creative inspiration.

Your use of colour is both vibrant and nuanced. Could you share your thoughts on colour theory and its role in your compositions?

While I may not adhere to traditional color theory principles, I gravitate towards overlapping and blending colors in my oil paintings. Although my approach to color may be intuitive, there is a discernible method underlying my compositions, guided by years of experimentation and refinement. While I may not consciously adhere to established color theories, my compositions are nonetheless characterized by vibrant palettes and nuanced interplays of color and light.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists who are also embarking on a journey of self-discovery through their craft?

I would encourage aspiring artists to paint prolifically, embracing the journey of self-discovery and creative exploration. It’s essential not to be deterred by criticism but instead to view it as an opportunity for growth and refinement. Ultimately, the goal should be to derive joy and fulfilment from the act of painting itself, allowing passion and curiosity to guide the artistic journey.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations and goals as an artist, and how do you see your work evolving in the future?

As an artist, my primary aspiration is to continue creating from a place of internal necessity, unconstrained by external expectations or ambitions for fame or success. While I hope to share my art with a broader audience, my focus remains on the intrinsic value of the creative process itself. Moving forward, I anticipate further exploration and evolution in my work, driven by an ongoing commitment to experimentation and personal growth.

Our readers love to travel. What destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Japan holds a special allure for me, given my passion for traditional Japanese martial arts and fascination with Eastern culture. While I may not travel extensively myself, preferring to let my paintings journey to new homes around the world, Japan remains a destination I hope to explore someday.

With a keen eye for blending the rich heritage of Italian craftsmanship with the timeless elegance of British design, Paolo shares the remarkable journey that led to the establishment of his esteemed brand.

Through captivating anecdotes and insightful reflections, readers are transported into the heart of Francone Bespoke Taps, where each piece is meticulously crafted to embody the perfect fusion of heritage and modernity.

Join House of Coco as they sit down with Paolo Francone to explore the inspirations, challenges, and triumphs that have shaped his entrepreneurial journey, offering readers a glimpse into the world of luxury brassware redefined…

Can you share a pivotal moment in your life that led you to establish Francone Bespoke Taps, merging Italian craftsmanship with British design?

After several years of working in marketing and sales in the UK, including for some of the best large corporates, I wasn’t completely satisfied with my role. As a self-disciplined person, I felt a persistent desire to build my own business. I wanted to combine everything I had learned in the UK with what my native area of Piedmont, Italy, could offer. It’s an area dominated by two industries – fabrics, with brands such as Zegna and Loro Piana, and brassware – particularly bathroom and kitchen fixtures.

I aimed to develop an online business and initially thought it would be challenging to convey the quality of fabrics and the tactile experience of materials online. However, with brassware fixtures, I immediately saw an opportunity to blend the style of UK designs with the skill and beauty of Italian craftsmanship into an online brand.

Growing up in Piedmont, Italy, you were surrounded by artisan workshops. How did this childhood exposure influence your passion for craftsmanship and bespoke design?

Coming from a small town in this region greatly influenced me. My father was a building constructor, and from time to time, I would accompany him on visits to local artisans to have things made. It could be anything from gates to wooden doors, windows, and more. I found the world of workshops and craftsmanship fascinating from the very beginning. I appreciated the relationships built with all the various artisans and admired and respected their skills and approach.

Moving from Italy to London seems like a significant transition. How did your appreciation for traditional British style evolve during this time, and how does it manifest in Francone Bespoke Taps?

I love the simple elegance of British design. The focus on details and timeless style in British interiors aligns with my preference for a sophisticated yet subtle atmosphere.

Moving from Italy to London brought about a profound shift in my appreciation for traditional British style. This transition influenced our brand of brassware fixtures, emphasizing timeless elegance and a commitment to craftsmanship.

At Francone Bespoke Taps, we embrace solid brass in crafting our products. The finishes, ranging from polished nickel to bronze and different variations of brass, are all living finishes that age beautifully over time, reminiscent of returning to traditions.

Francone Bespoke Taps is a blend of Italian heritage and British design. How do you balance these two influences in your products, and what challenges or rewards does it bring?

By blending Italian craftsmanship with British aesthetics, we create fixtures that balance heritage and design. We meticulously integrate the internal parts with mechanisms made in Italy with high-quality materials and draw inspiration from traditional British design. The challenge lies in harmonizing these diverse styles to create cohesive and unique products.

In your journey, working closely with craftsmen and using traditional methods has been a priority. Can you share a memorable experience where this approach resulted in something truly exceptional?

Our approach involves customizing designs based on customers’ preferences and design needs, then collaborating with artisans to turn them into unique products. This approach was evident in the first of many projects we completed with the high-end gym group, Barry’s UK. We were asked for a very specific finish, which we tailored for them after sharing a few samples. It was akin to creating a culinary dish that required a combination of specific ingredients to produce a unique and memorable taste! The finish comprised a brass material base, a nickel layer, some copper, and a slightly brushed dark bronze. The result was an exceptional tone of finish that delighted the client.

Your commitment to superior quality is evident. If you could go back and do one thing differently in establishing Francone Bespoke Taps, what would it be, and why?

From day one, each step has been carefully considered and thoughtfully executed. I started off with a budget of zero, so initially, it was challenging. But at the same time, the constraints added more significance to each decision I made – from product development to branding. Handling customer support, overseeing branding, product development, and managing the website independently allowed me to gain insights into various aspects that could be improved and identify opportunities. Managing everything by myself served as a valuable starting point, providing insights into areas for development and uncovering potential opportunities.

Is there a specific quote or mantra that inspires you personally and guides the ethos of Francone Bespoke Taps?

The first artisan I started to work with used to say, “Everything can be done.” This is our guiding principle, and we always explore all avenues when faced with special requests. We avoid saying, “We can’t do it.”

As the driving force behind design innovation, how do you ensure that each piece honours its heritage while remaining true to contemporary design methods and ingenuity?

Essentially, we keep the design traditional while incorporating innovation and modern technologies, particularly in terms of mechanisms and materials. However, for some aspects, the old ways are still the best.

Francone Bespoke Taps serves a diverse range of clients. Can you share a project or collaboration that was particularly challenging but immensely rewarding?

Francone Bespoke Taps recently embarked on an exciting custom project for a client in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The client sought a unique indoor vanity area along with three outdoor stone sinks. With a reputation for fully customizable solutions, Francone Bespoke Taps was prepared to bring the client’s vision to reality. Designing touch control taps, huge custom mirror frames, and outdoor taps for the large stone sinks posed unprecedented challenges. Yet, through meticulous planning, precise measurements, and innovative problem-solving, the team successfully delivered. The project was shortlisted for the Society of British Interior Design Awards for its seamless blend of modern technology and timeless design to bring the client’s vision to life.

Paolo, you offer a wide range of materials, finishes, and styles. What advice would you offer someone looking to create a truly unique and personalized bathroom fixture?

In terms of finishes, I am a big fan of unlacquered brass. Whether polished, satin, or tumbled, the effect is outstanding from day one until the patina develops, if desired. When it comes to designs, I would likely choose the Art Deco style. It’s increasingly appreciated, and I believe incorporating some brass Art Deco elements can make a bathroom truly unique. At Francone Bespoke Taps, we are currently working on creating a new collection incorporating the Art Deco style.

Can you share a memorable client story where Francone Bespoke Taps played a significant role in enhancing the aesthetic of a space?

Francone Bespoke Taps is fortunate to have clients who choose our products for their beautiful properties, one of which is Tythe, a unique wedding venue nestled in the picturesque Oxfordshire countryside. Tythe is popular with couples seeking a perfect blend of rustic charm and timeless elegance for their special day. When renovating the property, the owner was very clear about the look she wanted and did extensive research – both online and offline.

She desired a gorgeous brass tap that would age beautifully and endure the test of time as well as repeated use from guests. She came across an image of a brass shower head by Francone Bespoke Taps online and knew almost immediately that she had found her supplier. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, she knew our products would age gracefully and fit perfectly with her vision for the 17th Century house.

Designing made-to-order products involves a collaborative process. How do you and your team ensure that clients’ unique visions are realized while maintaining the integrity of the brand?

The journey begins on our website, where clients can browse existing designs or create their own. We offer bespoke, completely customized, beautifully finished products – clients simply convey their desires, and we handle the rest.

While keeping our core product elements, we can adjust size, finish, and design to meet specific requirements while maintaining our style, materials, and brand.

If you had to describe the essence of Francone Bespoke Taps in three words, what would they be, and why?

Probably our slogan “Traditional fixtures, elevated.” This truly encapsulates our ethos. With tradition in mind, we elevate with modern technologies and features, not only in terms of products but also in customer experience. This extends from our website to social media and customer service, ensuring clients thoroughly enjoy their interactions with us.

As a leader, how do you foster creativity and innovation within your team to keep pushing the boundaries of design?

I promote creativity by encouraging open communication, valuing diverse perspectives, and fostering a culture of experimentation. This applies not only to new products requested by clients but also to other aspects of our operations, such as customer support or packaging details. I encourage team members to propose new ideas.

You’ve mentioned the importance of Francone Bespoke Taps serving generations to come. How do you envision the legacy of your brand in the long term?

I envision Francone Bespoke Taps as a timeless brand known for exceptional craftsmanship, innovative design, and quality. I aspire for it to become synonymous with heritage, sophistication, and reliability, leaving a lasting imprint in luxury brassware.

Your dream destination to travel to is often a source of inspiration. Where is that destination, and how does it influence your creative process?

In general, exploring cities, especially capitals, can be a rich source of inspiration. However, when selecting a dream destination, I find Rome particularly captivating due to its unparalleled richness in history.

Balancing heritage and modernity is an art. Are there specific design principles or philosophies that you adhere to in achieving this delicate balance?

I admire designs that respect traditions, use innovative quality, prioritize simplicity for practicality, have timeless appeal, and follow a sustainable approach. My goal is to create products that meet users’ immediate needs and contribute positively to culture and the environment.

In the process of creating bespoke designs, what role does the client play, and how do you ensure their vision is translated into the final product?

In the realm of bespoke designs, some products are born out of specific requests from clients. Balancing design aesthetics with practicality becomes crucial, and simplicity often emerges as the optimal solution that satisfies both aspects. It’s important to note that in the design process, compromises are not only made with manufacturing considerations but also with the goal of ensuring the easiest installation possible.

As someone deeply involved in the creative process, what advice would you offer to aspiring designers looking to make their mark in the industry?

Simplicity and being observant are key. Embrace the power of simplicity in your designs. Strive for clarity, functionality, and elegance, as simplicity often leads to timeless and impactful creations. Also, inspiration is all around us. Stay observant in your daily life, paying attention to details, patterns, and interactions. You never know where the next great idea might come from.

Lastly, how can people stay connected with you and follow the journey of Francone Bespoke Taps? Where can they find more information about your designs and the brand?

Can you share the moment or experience from your childhood on the island of Jersey that ignited your passion for sustainable design and influenced your brand’s philosophy?

Growing up on a small island cultivated my love for the outdoors and sports. The island’s natural beauty inspired me to appreciate the environment, and this connection to nature fuelled my passion for sustainable design. Witnessing the delicate ecosystem of Jersey instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to protect it.

How has your background in Furniture and Product design at Bath Spa University shaped your approach to creating pieces that blend function, style, and sustainability?

Bath Spa University provided a platform for me to explore my design approach. Being hands-on with materials and constantly experimenting in the workshop shaped my commitment to blending function, style, and sustainability. The university’s emphasis on personal exploration also allowed me to develop a unique perspective that reflects in my creations.

Being shortlisted for Young Furniture Designer of the Year is a remarkable achievement. How did that recognition impact your journey as a designer and entrepreneur?

Being shortlisted boosted my confidence in both my design skills and knowledge of furniture making. It was a pivotal moment that validated my dedication to the craft. The recognition opened doors, providing opportunities to showcase my work and connect with different people within the design industry.

Can you delve into the philosophy that guides your design process and how it aims to elevate human interaction through sensitive design?

The philosophy guiding my design process revolves around the notion that every product in the world undergoes a design process and is worth exploring from both an aesthetic and practical perspective. I also approach design with sensitivity toward natural materials and the surrounding environment, aiming to create designs that are functional and contribute to elevating human interactions.

By being attuned to the innate qualities of natural materials, my designs seek to enhance the human experience. I aim to craft spaces that foster meaningful gatherings and conversations or provide environments for relaxation and comfort. Whether it’s a piece of furniture that invites people to connect or a space that encourages moments of tranquility, the overarching philosophy is to enrich lives through thoughtful and sensitive design.

In exploring materiality and processes, how do you ensure that your creations not only meet functional and stylish criteria but also adhere to sustainable principles?

My design process starts with using different processes to manipulate the materials and play with form. This initial exploration serves as the foundation and inspiration for my sketching stages and final design. Throughout, simplicity is a guiding principle for me that ensures my designs stand out while maintaining functionality.

Also central to my sustainable design principles is the conscientious use of local resources to minimise the carbon footprint. I prioritise the utilization of natural materials like local timber, emphasizing responsible practices to minimize waste. This approach aligns with my commitment to creating environmentally conscious designs that are both functional and sustainable.

What challenges have you faced in incorporating sustainable credentials into your designs, and how have you overcome them?

Incorporating sustainable credentials as a new business has been challenging due to the inherent costs and time associated with adopting sustainable practices. However, despite these challenges, I have taken a proactive step by using Grown in Britain Certified materials. This certification not only aligns with my commitment to sustainability but also facilitates the traceability of materials used in creating my furniture, notably in the case of the Archie design.

Your brand focuses on limiting the impact on the planet. Could you share some specific practices or initiatives within your business that reflect this commitment to sustainability?

My brand, Gigi Cooke, is dedicated to the design and production of long-lasting furniture with a commitment to sustainability, addressing environmental, social, and economic aspects. Being from Jersey, I wanted to use local craftsmen for manufacturing, and while I cannot source materials on the Island, I am using sustainably certified British timber imported from the south of England.

In addition, with Archie, my latest design, 5% of the proceeds will be donated to Jersey Trees for Life, an amazing charity whose mission is to inspire, facilitate, and promote the planting, conservation, and protection of trees and hedgerows while educating our community about their environmental, ecological, and social importance.

Beyond the design realm, what other aspects of your life contribute to your creative process and inspire your work?

Nature and the outdoors play a pivotal role in inspiring my creative process. Witnessing the beauty of trees in their natural environment and observing the harmony of our surroundings, coupled with the ever-evolving aspects of nature, heavily influence my work. The organic forms, textures, and material uses found in nature serve as a constant inspiration, shaping the aesthetics and sustainability focus in my designs.

As the founder of your brand, what moments or achievements are you most proud of in your journey so far?

As the driving force behind my brand, Gigi Cooke, I take immense pride in the pivotal moments and achievements throughout my journey. The initial establishment of my business stands out as a significant milestone, realizing a dream of being in control of my own future as a designer and founder.

A particularly “pinch me” moment occurred when my first piece of furniture, Archie, was launched and featured in British Vogue from January to March of this year. Another noteworthy achievement is this spring; my design, Archie, will be stocked in Holloway of Ludlow in Bath. The prospect of seeing Archie in-store for purchase in the upcoming spring marks a notable milestone in expanding the presence of my creations.

How do you balance the need for commercial success with your commitment to sustainable and sensitive design?

Balancing commercial success with sustainability involves making informed choices in material sourcing, manufacturing processes, and marketing strategies. Being transparent about my sustainable practices creates a connection with consumers, fostering trust and loyalty.

Travel often serves as a wellspring of inspiration. What destinations have had a profound impact on your creative vision, and how do those influences manifest in your designs?

London, with its abundance of creativity, has been a constant source of inspiration for me. The city’s diverse architecture and the convergence of different cultures have significantly shaped my creative vision. When I return from London, I’m always infused with a renewed drive to create and make.

The city’s dynamic business landscape inspires me to broaden my design horizons by visiting showrooms, boutiques, and various studios that span different mediums. The experiences and influences gathered from London resonate in my designs, reflecting a fusion of architectural elements and multicultural nuances.

If you could collaborate with any other designer or artist, living or deceased, who would it be, and why?

If I could collaborate with any other creative, it would be Maarten Baas – his experimental and playful designs push process to create striking pieces of art and furniture.

Looking back at your career, is there anything you would do differently, and what valuable lessons have you learned along the way?

Reflecting on my career, I currently wouldn’t change anything. However, a crucial lesson I’ve learned is the importance of proactively putting myself out there. Researching companies, individuals, or anyone who inspires or can offer guidance has been instrumental. I’ve found that reaching out to lots of people and making connections is invaluable. This approach has opened doors, created opportunities, and fostered meaningful connections throughout my journey.

Can you share a particularly challenging project you undertook and how it stretched your creative boundaries?

One of my most challenging projects was Archie, my most recent venture and also my first launched project. The difficulty arose during the decision-making phase, where I had to select the final design to progress with. This pivotal choice not only marked the initiation of Archie but also demanded a comprehensive evaluation of creative potential, functionality, and alignment with my brand’s vision.

The challenge of making this crucial decision ultimately pushed the boundaries of my creativity, requiring a thoughtful and strategic approach to ensure the success of Archie as both a design and a product.

In a rapidly changing industry, how do you stay ahead of trends while maintaining the uniqueness and authenticity of your brand?

I believe authenticity is key to staying relevant. By designing pieces that resonate with my personal interests and values, I naturally stay true to my brand. While staying informed about industry trends, I nevertheless prioritize creating timeless pieces that reflect my unique perspective.

What advice would you give to aspiring designers who are passionate about incorporating sustainability into their work?

Design is fun and requires a lot of time, so you definitely need to be passionate and use your interests to influence your design and processes. Regarding sustainability, given the ever-expanding innovation in sustainability, it’s essential to stay well-informed and educated. The field is dynamic, and staying ahead of the curve ensures that your designs stay relevant. Embrace the continuous learning process and let your commitment to sustainability drive both your creativity and your responsibility as a designer.

Do you have a favorite piece or collection that holds special significance to you personally, and what is the story behind it?

My first piece of furniture, Archie, has a special place in my heart. The product encompasses all my beliefs and vision for what my brand stands for. Archie highlights the beauty of the timber the UK has to offer by showcasing the materiality of English oak and ash. Archie is a playful approach to versatile, contemporary furniture, mirroring its unique and arching silhouette, from which it draws its name. In addition, Archie seamlessly transforms from a stylish stool, ideal for providing extra seating, into a functional coffee table that enhances the coziness of gatherings. It also effortlessly transitions into a chic side table, perfect for holding your favorite reads. This multifunctional design not only reflects my commitment to aesthetics and versatility but also represents the essence of my brand’s philosophy – combining form, functionality, and a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of sustainable materials.

How do you see the role of British design evolving, especially in the context of sustainability, in the coming years?

I envision British design evolving towards a more localized and sustainable approach. Consumers want to learn about what they are buying and reflect their own personal style and ethics. People want to understand the story behind what they are purchasing, and British designers will likely focus on authenticity, craftsmanship, and environmentally conscious practices.

Beyond the world of design, what are your personal interests and hobbies that contribute to your overall well-being and creativity?

My love for the outdoors and passion in sports contribute significantly to my well-being and creativity. Engaging in activities like surfing, hockey, running, and cycling allows me to recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
