Christmas time in London is truly magical, the twinkly lights, decorations and sparkling store fronts transform the city into a Christmassy mecca for shoppers and visitors alike. The Royal Lancaster London has switched the festive vibe up a notch and turned their quintessentially British afternoon tea experience into a seasonal delight with a twist. Here at House of Coco we love to indulge in high tea and after an afternoon of Christmas shopping in Mayfair we were delighted to escape the hustle and bustle of the crowded streets and retreat inside the hotel.
Just a short walk from Hyde Park, the Royal Lancaster is an oasis of calm. Inside, the floor to ceiling tree glimmers and shines. Baubles, bows and wreaths decorate the glamorous lobby and bring a Christmas glow to our visit.
Situated on the first floor, Hyde Café is contemporary and light, with lots of marble, mirror, as well as a splash of gold gilt touches to add a luxurious feel. After been shown to our seat, tucked away in a private corner of the café we were served a crisp, cool glass of Laurent-Perrier Rosé champagne. The menu (which also has a vegan option) includes a delightful selection of delicately crafted sandwiches. Traditional fingers of roast beef, salmon, egg mayonnaise and cucumber and cream cheese are served on an intricate three-tiered gold stand. Deliciously warm baked scones follow, accompanied by a choice of Camellia’s Tea House teas.At this point our bellies were full and we were enjoying the blissful cosy surroundings, but you can’t visit without tasting their show-stopper range of Christmas themed cakes. Styled into a Santa’s hat, a bauble, Christmas tree and Christmas present they look almost too good to eat. A firm favourite of ours was the white chocolate bauble filled with a light vanilla mouse and tiny chunks of caramelised apple, sat on top of a crunchy golden biscuit base. After toasting our teacups and polishing off the last of the cakes it was time to hit the streets and finish off the last of our shopping.
This enchanting afternoon tea is fabulously festive and the perfect place to eat, drink and be merry.
